Background: Outdoor physical activity (PA) is an important component of overall health; however, it is difficult to measure. Passively collected smartphone location data like Google Location History (GLH) present an opportunity to address this issue.
Objectives: To evaluate the use of GLH data for measuring outdoor PA.
Background: Ensuring child survival is a critical global challenge, requiring a robust and comprehensive understanding of the risk factors contributing to under-five mortality (U5M). We aimed to synthesise and summarise the current available evidence on risk factors of U5M and infant mortality worldwide to inform global child health programmes.
Methods: We searched six major databases (Embase, Medline, Scopus, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Global Health) and repositories of systematic reviews, as well as grey literature sources to identify systematic reviews and meta-analyses that examined the associations between risk factors of U5M and infant mortality between 1 January 1990 and 4 March 2024.
Background: The treatment of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a major clinical challenge and has a significant impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and prolonged use of corticosteroids may have a negative impact on HRQoL.
Objectives: To evaluate the impact of ITP on HRQoL and complications of corticosteroid treatment in patients with ITP in two teaching hospitals in Ethiopia.
Methods: The institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from November 15, 2022, to March 15, 2023, to recruit 214 study participants during the study period (4 months).
Purpose: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is now an important goal of therapy for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). However, there is paucity of data for patients living in low-income countries (LICs) and on factors associated with their HRQoL profile. The primary objective was to compare the HRQoL of patients with CML living in an LIC (Ethiopia) with that of patients living in a high-income country (HIC).

Background: Unmet need for birth spacing can significantly impact maternal and child health outcomes, leading to unintended or mistimed births, neonatal mortality, pregnancy loss, induced abortions, small-sized births, and malnutrition. Considering the role of women empowerment in women's sexual and reproductive health, we examined the association between the survey-based women's empowerment index (SWPER) and unmet need for spacing in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
Methods: We used data from the Demographic and Health Surveys of 21 in SSA conducted between 2015 and 2021.
Maternal adiposity (overweight or obesity) has been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, although the potential risks of long-term neuropsychiatric and behavioral outcomes in the offspring remain unclear. Using the PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify studies on maternal adiposity and offspring neuropsychiatric outcomes. Inverse variance-weighted random-effects meta-analyses were used to pool effect estimates with 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) from adjusted odds ratios (OR) and hazard ratios (HR).

Rather than ambient temperature, we aimed to use a composite bioclimatic metric (Universal Thermal Climate Index, UTCI) to identify critical susceptible windows for the associations between bioclimatic exposure and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) risk. Daily UTCI exposure from 12 weeks of preconception through pregnancy was linked to 415,091 singleton pregnancies between 1st January 2000 and 31st December 2015 in Western Australia.

Identifying mutations that drive cancer, understanding cancer type specificities, and delineating how driver mutations interact with each other to establish disease is vital for identifying therapeutic vulnerabilities. Such cancer specific patterns and gene co-occurrences can be identified by studying tumor genome sequences, and networks have proven effective in uncovering relationships between sequences.

Methods: Infants born < 32 + 6 weeks of gestation in Western Australia were eligible for inclusion.
Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) drugs have significantly improved chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) outcomes. Neopeptides from CML cells may induce specific immune responses, which are crucial for deep molecular (DMR) and treatment-free remission (TFR). In this study of Ethiopian patients with CML (n = 162), the HLA alleles and single-nucleotide polymorphisms of five cytokines revealed significant associations with clinical outcomes.

Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted, including 350 (66.7%) and 175 (33.
Anticoagulation management using warfarin is challenging in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, adherence, and satisfaction with warfarin therapy and associated factors among outpatients at the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. An interview-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 350 patients receiving warfarin therapy at cardiac and hematology clinics of TASH.

CD59 deficiency due to common somatic variants in the PIG-A gene in hematopoietic stem cells causes paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. The ISBT database lists one nonsense and three missense germline variants that are associated with the CD59-null phenotype.

There is inconsistent evidence of an association between early pregnancy loss and subsequent diabetic and hypertensive disorders in women. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated evidence on the risk of the subsequent development of pregnancy and non-pregnancy related diabetic and hypertensive disorders in women who experienced an early pregnancy loss.

Corticosteroids are the cornerstone of ITP treatment, but they are associated with many side effects. In this retrospective cohort study, treatment outcomes and treatment adherence in patients with ITP were investigated in 214 ITP patients from November 15, 2022 to March 15, 2023.

We summarized the available evidence on the impact of armed conflicts on HIV treatment outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa from 2002 to 2022.
Methods: We searched four databases; MEDLINE, PubMed, CINHAL, and Scopus.
SARS-CoV-2 and blood-borne viral coinfections are well reported. Nevertheless, little is known regarding the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and coinfection with blood-borne viruses in hematologic malignancy patients in Ethiopia. We aimed to assess the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 and associated infections with hepatitis B and other viruses among adolescent and adult acute leukemia patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Therefore, we performed this study among newly confirmed CML patients at Tikur Anbesa Specialized Hospital (TASH), Ethiopia.
Objective: To determine the hematological, clinical, cytogenetic and molecular profiles of confirmed CML patients at tertiary care teaching hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Background: More than 70% of the health facilities in Tigray, northern Ethiopia, have been totally or partially destroyed by the recent war in the region. Diagnosis and management of tuberculosis were among many health services that suffered. In this study we assess the status of tuberculosis care in health facilities of Tigray during the recent war and compare it with the immediate pre-war state.

Research is one learning tool by identifying strength and areas of improvement. However, little is known about outcomes of therapeutic feeding programmes in comparison with the standard indicators set in humanitarian setting.

Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to examine the magnitude and consistency of association reported by those studies.
Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was guided by the PRISMA protocol.
Background: It is important to explore factors that may hinder early childhood development in AEDC Emotional Maturity and Social Competence domains as these underpin the foundation for health, well-being, and productivity over the life course. No previous study has examined whether, or to what extent, preeclampsia increases the risk of developmental vulnerability in social and emotional domains in early childhood.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study on the association between preeclampsia and childhood developmental vulnerability in emotional maturity and social competence domains in children born in Western Australia in 2009, 2012 and 2015.
