Background: Video-assisted debriefing (VAD) combined with the advocacy and inquiry (A&I) technique is a tool that allows video playback of selected segments of a simulation, thereby helping the debriefers structure the session. We sought to evaluate the early responsiveness of patient-reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS) scores in a cohort of patients operatively treated for capitellar OCD.
Methods: Four PROMIS questionnaires (mobility, upper extremity [UE], pain interference, and peer relations) were electronically administered to patients treated for capitellar OCD at a single tertiary academic medical center between January 1, 2015, and July 1, 2018.
Previous studies have demonstrated that sterile equipment is frequently contaminated intraoperatively, yet the incidence of miniature c-arm (MCA) contamination in hand and upper extremity surgery is unclear. To examine this incidence, a prospective study of MCA sterility in hand and upper extremity cases was performed in a hospital main operating room (MOR) ( = 13) or an ambulatory surgery center operating room (AOR) ( = 16) at a single tertiary care center. We reinvestigated the EGFR expression and activation status necessary for response in cell lines and compared that to clinical samples.
Methods: Clinical samples of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC, n=63), mostly from late stage (IV) and poorly or undifferentiated character and cultured cell lines (n=14) were tested by immunohistochemistry (IHC) (n=55) and sandwich immunoassays (n=63) for expression and phosphorylation of EGFR (Tyrosine-1173).

Background: The Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation 2 Diabetes (BARI 2D) trial in 2368 patients with stable ischemic heart disease assigned before randomization to percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass grafting strata reported similar 5-year all-cause mortality rates with insulin sensitization versus insulin provision therapy and with a strategy of prompt initial coronary revascularization and intensive medical therapy or intensive medical therapy alone with revascularization reserved for clinical indication(s). In this report, we examine the predefined secondary end points of cardiac death and myocardial infarction (MI).

BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT MINOR symptoms may presage serious events, we report four years' experience with a web-based adverse event (AE) tracking system (eAETS) designed to capture AEs of a minor nature that would not meet criteria for ethical review. The eAETS has supported 175 diverse clinical protocols, is user-friendly and navigationally intuitive, and restricts access based on protocol ownership. The user creates an initial risk profile for comparison to subsequent AEs to identify unanticipated patterns.

The algorithm uses a nonlinear method for feature extraction based on maximum representation and discrimination feature (MRDF) and a Bayesian method for classification based on sparse multinomial logistic regression (SMLR). Both the autofluorescence and the diffuse-reflectance spectra acquired in vivo from patients undergoing craniotomy or temporal lobectomy at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center were used to train and validate the algorithm.

Reflectance and transmission spectra of in vitro brain tissue samples were measured with a single-integrating-sphere spectrometer for wavelengths 400-1300 nm and converted to absorption and reduced scattering spectra using an inverse adding-doubling technique. Optical property spectra were classified as deriving from white matter, grey matter or glioma tissue according to histopathologic diagnosis, and mean absorption and reduced scattering spectra were calculated for the three tissue categories.

To investigate this potentiality, angular profiles of diffuse reflectance and fluorescence emission from turbid media were evaluated experimentally and by Monte Carlo simulation for a range of incident excitation angles and sample optical properties. For emission collected within the limits of a semi-infinite excitation region, normalized angular emission profiles are symmetric, roughly Lambertian, and only weakly dependent on sample optical properties for fluorescence at all excitation angles and for diffuse reflectance at small excitation angles relative to the surface normal.

This real-time glucose sensing (RTGS) system measures transdermal fluid glucose through micropores in the stratum corneum that are kept open by continuous vacuum pressure.
Design And Methods: A comparison of self-monitored blood glucose values and RTGS values was obtained in 110 children with type 1 diabetes ranging in age from 2 to 18 years.
Surgical resection remains the treatment of choice for brain tumors with infiltrating margins but is currently limited by visual discrimination between normal and neoplastic marginal tissues during surgery. Imaging modalities such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance, positron emission tomography, and optical techniques can accurately localize tumor margins. We believe coupling the fine resolution of current imaging techniques with the precise cutting of midinfrared lasers through image-guided neurosurgery can greatly enhance tumor margin resection.

Speckle tracking methods overcome the major limitations of current Doppler methods for flow imaging and quantification: angle dependence and aliasing. In this paper, we review the development of speckle tracking, with particular attention to the advantages and limitations of two-dimensional algorithms that use a single transducer aperture. Ensemble tracking, a recent speckle tracking method based upon parallel receive processing, is described.
