Osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality in elderly population, and accurate diagnosis is important for improving treatment outcomes. OVF diagnosis suffers from high misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis rates, as well as high workload. Deep learning methods applied to plain radiographs, a simple, fast, and inexpensive examination, might solve this problem.

Polysaccharides are widely used in biomedicine because of their unique biological activity, low costs, and easy-to-obtain. In this paper, polysaccharide (BSP) was integrated into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) to prepare a series of WPU-BSP (WPUB) hydrogels. The hydrogels showed good compressive strength, water absorption and retention ability, which are favorable for wound healing.

Article Synopsis
  • An injectable liquid hydrogel created from silk fibroin and polyurethane shows promise in treating spinal degenerative disease by effectively filling disc defects and reducing implant movement risk.
  • The hydrogel demonstrated strong mechanical properties in tests, such as the ability to withstand over a million cycles of fatigue and good compressive stiffness, indicating its potential for replacing the nucleus pulposus.
  • In animal studies, the hydrogel evidenced strong biocompatibility over three months, suggesting it could be a viable option for future clinical applications in spinal health.

In degenerative disc disease, an injectable hydrogel can fill a degenerate area completely, reduce the risk of implant migration and subsequent loss of height of the intervertebral disc, and minimise surgical defects. Here, we propose a method of preparing an injectable silk fibroin/polyurethane (SF/PU) composite hydrogel by chemical cross-linking under physiological conditions. Mechanical testing was used to determine the mechanical strength of the hydrogel.
