Bariatric surgery (BS) can have negative effects on bone health. Bone microarchitecture quality evaluation using the trabecular bone score (TBS) has not been described in patients after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). To test the hypothesis that the TBS is clinically useful for this population, we evaluated changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and the TBS in a longitudinal cohort study following SG.

Purpose: Up to 20% of patients suffering from symptomatic hemorrhoids will require surgery. Excisional hemorrhoidectomy (EH) and stapled hemorrhoidopexy (SH) are both standard and safe procedures. While SH has a short-term advantage of faster recovery and lower postoperative pain, its long-term efficacy is debatable.

DNA methylation is a fundamental epigenetic mark that governs gene expression and chromatin organization, thus providing a window into cellular identity and developmental processes. Current datasets typically include only a fraction of methylation sites and are often based either on cell lines that underwent massive changes in culture or on tissues containing unspecified mixtures of cells. Here we describe a human methylome atlas, based on deep whole-genome bisulfite sequencing, allowing fragment-level analysis across thousands of unique markers for 39 cell types sorted from 205 healthy tissue samples.

Background: Fluorescence imaging with indocyanine green is increasingly being used in colorectal surgery to assess anastomotic perfusion, and to detect sentinel lymph nodes.

Methods: In this 2-round, online, Delphi survey, 35 international experts were asked to vote on 69 statements pertaining to patient preparation and contraindications to fluorescence imaging during colorectal surgery, indications, technical aspects, potential advantages/disadvantages, and effectiveness versus limitations, and training and research. Methodological steps were adopted during survey design to minimize risk of bias.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research indicates a link between Vitamin D deficiency and anemia, particularly in patients with periodontitis, who show lower 25(OH) D levels compared to healthy individuals.
  • The study aimed to compare Vitamin D levels and red blood cell indices between patients with generalized Stage III Grade B periodontitis and healthy controls, highlighting the association between these factors.
  • Findings revealed that periodontitis patients had significantly lower levels of 25(OH) D, hemoglobin, and other blood indices, suggesting that managing periodontitis may be important for maintaining adequate Vitamin D levels and preventing anemia.

Objectives: Intraoperative fluorescence imaging is currently used in a variety of surgical fields for four main purposes: assessing tissue perfusion; identifying/localizing cancer; mapping lymphatic systems; and visualizing anatomy. To establish evidence-based guidance for research and practice, understanding the state of research on fluorescence imaging in different surgical fields is needed. We evaluated the evidence on fluorescence imaging for perfusion assessments using the Idea, Development, Exploration, Assessment, Long Term Study (IDEAL) framework, which was designed for describing the stages of innovation in surgery and other interventional procedures.

Background: Fistula-in-ano due to cryptoglandular disease is a common condition. While a simple anal fistula can be treated successfully by a fistulotomy, the risk of potential damage to the anal sphincters and subsequent poor functional outcomes persist in a large portion of patients with complex fistulae. Several sphincter-preserving treatment procedures have been described for complex fistulae over the past 3 decades, with variable results and complication rates, and no procedure is proven to be superior to the others.
