Substance use and misuse remain formidable public health challenges and are intricately linked to social determinants of health (SDOH). Addressing SDOH requires structural interventions along with clinical support to change relevant policies. In this article, the authors review structural interventions known as prevention infrastructures and provide a framework for considering how different models of prevention infrastructures can be used to address SDOH that contribute to substance use.

Program Description: Growing Up GREAT! (GUG) is a sexual and reproductive health (SRH) program for adolescents aged 10-14 years in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The multilevel program takes an ecological approach to foster community examination of gender inequitable norms and to increase adolescents' SRH knowledge, skills, and gender-equitable attitudes. GUG design, piloting, and scale-up were informed by a theory of change and responsive feedback mechanisms (RFMs) during piloting and scale-up.

Unpaid care work is disproportionately performed by women and girls, negatively impacting their ability to engage in educational, social, and economic opportunities. Despite calls to address these inequities, empirical evidence on interventions designed to shift gender attitudes is limited, especially within adolescent populations. To address this gap, we used longitudinal data to conduct difference-in-difference and logistic regression models to examine the impact of a norms-shifting intervention in Kinshasa on adolescent gender-equitable chore-sharing attitudes.

The Impacts of Two Gender-Transformative Interventions on Early Adolescent Gender Norms Perceptions: A Difference-in-Difference Analysis.

Purpose: Inequitable gender norms are widespread and can be harmful to the wellbeing of adolescents. This study estimates the effects of two gender-transformative interventions, Semangat Dunia Remaja or Teen Aspirations (SETARA) and Growing Up Great! (GUG!), on gender norms perceptions and attitudes among very young adolescents in poor urban settings in Bandar Lampung, Semarang, Denpasar (Indonesia), and Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Methods: The study draws from the longitudinal Global Early Adolescent Study, using a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the interventions.

Implementing Interventions to Address Gender and Power Inequalities in Early Adolescence: Utilizing a Theory of Change to Assess Conditions for Success.

Purpose: To create a set of criteria to assess facilitators and barriers to implementation among gender transformative interventions that target very young adolescents (VYAs) across different cultural settings.

Methods: Interventionists and researchers involved in the Global Early Adolescent Study created a Theory of Change (ToC) based on summarizing intervention components from five different gender transformative intervention curricula. Embedded within the ToC is a set of criteria labeled, 'Conditions of Success' which were developed to illustrate that change cannot happen unless interventions are implemented successfully.

Adolescent-Parent Relationships and Communication: Consequences for Pregnancy Knowledge and Family Planning Service Awareness.

Purpose: We explore three dimensions of parent-adolescent relationships (sexual and reproductive health (SRH) communications, connectedness, and parental monitoring) from the perspective of young adolescents as they relate to pregnancy knowledge and family planning service awareness in four diverse geographic areas ranging from low to high income settings and stratified by sex.

Methods: Analyses utilized baseline data from four Global Early Adolescent Study sites (Shanghai, China; Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo; Denpasar and Semarang, Indonesia; and New Orleans, United States). Multiple linear regressions were conducted to assess the relationships between key characteristics of parent-adolescent relationships and pregnancy knowledge.

This age presents critical opportunities for early intervention to promote gender-equitable attitudes and norms for improved adolescent health.

Methods: In Kinshasa, DRC, Growing Up GREAT! implemented a scalable approach to engage in- and out-of-school VYAs, caregivers, schools, and communities.

Understanding community- and system-capacity change over time: A close look at changing social capital in Evidence2Success communities.

Evidence in majority White and low-population areas suggest that community prevention systems can create social capital that is needed to support high-quality implementation and sustainability of evidence-based programs. This study expands prior work by asking the question: How does community social capital change during the implementation of a community prevention system in low-income, highly populated communities of color? Data were collected from Community Board members and Key Leaders in five communities. Linear mixed effect models analyzed data on reports of social capital over time, first as reported by Community Board members then by Key Leaders.

Background: Over 5000 community anti-drug coalitions operating in the USA serve as a cornerstone of federal drug prevention. These coalitions, however, have demonstrated effectiveness in preventing substance use only when they use technical assistance (TA) and implement evidence-based programs (EBPs). The absence of TA and EBP implementation by coalitions is a key research-to-practice gap.

Field-Modulated Anomalous Hall Conductivity and Planar Hall Effect in CoSnS Nanoflakes.

Time-reversal-symmetry-breaking Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have attracted great attention recently because of the interplay between intrinsic magnetism and topologically nontrivial electrons. Here, we present anomalous Hall and planar Hall effect studies on CoSnS nanoflakes, a magnetic WSM hosting stacked Kagome lattice. The reduced thickness modifies the magnetic properties of the nanoflake, resulting in a 15-time larger coercive field compared with the bulk, and correspondingly modifies the transport properties.

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is one of the most fundamental phenomena in physics. In the highly conductive regime, ferromagnetic metals have been the focus of past research. Here, we report a giant extrinsic AHE in KVSb, an exfoliable, highly conductive semimetal with Dirac quasiparticles and a vanadium Kagome net.

Cultural Orientation Gaps within a Family Systems Perspective.

The intersection of a family's heritage culture and new mainstream cultural norms results in person-to-person differences in values, beliefs, and behaviors, particularly among immigrant families. These differences often lead to divergent cultural views and patterns of behavior both within and between family members. According to the acculturation gap distress hypothesis, these cultural orientation gaps between family members have consequences for family functioning, and, in particular, adolescents' adjustment.

All Electrical Access to Topological Transport Features in MnPtSn Films.

The presence of nontrivial magnetic topology can give rise to nonvanishing scalar spin chirality and consequently a topological Hall or Nernst effect. Research on mindful parenting, an extension of mindfulness to the interpersonal domain of parent-child relationships, has been limited by its reliance on self-report assessment. The current study is the first to examine whether observational indices of parent-youth interactions differentiate between high and low levels of self-reported mindful parenting. The Iowa Family Interaction Rating Scales (IFIRS) were used to code interactions between mothers and their 7th grade youth.

Integrating mindfulness with parent training: effects of the Mindfulness-Enhanced Strengthening Families Program.

There is growing support for the efficacy of mindfulness training with parents as an intervention technique to improve parenting skills and reduce risk for youth problem behaviors. The evidence, however, has been limited to small scale studies, many with methodological shortcomings. Aviram-Ratner rectifying mechanism for DNA base-pair sequencing through graphene nanogaps.
