Background: The primary objective of this study was to analyse middle ear structures critical for cochlear implantation using computed tomography.

Materials And Methods: Patients who underwent cochlear implantation at the Department of Otolaryngology in Szczecin between 2015 and 2022 were eligible for the study. We analysed computed tomography images of 57 ears in 52 patients.

Topography of the infraorbital foramen in human skulls originating from different time periods.

Background: The infraorbital foramen (IOF) is present on the maxilla under the infraorbital margin. Its identification is essential in various surgical procedures. The main aim of this study was the morphometric assessment of the position of the right and left infraorbital foramina in relation to specific structural elements of the facial skeleton, their width and direction, and also the determination of the location of these foramina above maxillary teeth in examined male skulls (belonging to European populations) dated to the beginning of the 20th century and the medieval and post-medieval period.

Background: Dynamic advances in dentistry, especially in implantology has inspired researchers to carry out many studies investigating the topography of the mandibular canal and its ethnic differences. The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of variations in the position and topography of the mandibular canal based on radiographic images of human mandibles originating from modern and medieval skulls.

Materials And Methods: Morphometric examination of 126 radiographs of skulls (92 modern and 34 medieval skulls) was included.

Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Pregnancy.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a spectrum of abnormal respiratory events including habitual snoring and increased upper airway resistance and obstructive episodes. The uncertainties concerning the incidence and recognition of SDB during pregnancy and the importance of the issue for fetal and maternal health prompted us to screen pregnant women for SDB. The study included 312 women in the third trimester of pregnancy aged 17-46 of whom 51 were preselected, based on the results of SDB questionnaires, for a nighttime home screening using a portable ApneaLink Air device.

Diagnosis of Sleep-Disordered Breathing in the Home Environment.

Polysomnography, a gold standard for the diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing, is a complex investigation requiring access to the sleep laboratory. Thus, sleep-disordered breathing could be underdiagnosed. The aim of this paper was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of self-performed investigation of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the home setting, using a portable device, and to assess the comfort and simplicity of the procedure from the patient's perspective.

Influence of physiological stress on the presence of hypoplasia and fluctuating asymmetry in a medieval population from the village of Sypniewo.

This study aims to estimate the levels of physiological stress in the medieval rural population of Sypniewo by evaluating patterns of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and enamel hypoplasia (EH), and provide information on the influence of physiological stress during the prenatal and perinatal period on early childhood development. Stress is defined as any external or internal condition that challenges homeostasis of an organism. FA is associated with physiological stress occurring mainly during prenatal development and early childhood.

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Cavernous Sinus - Otolaryngological Sequelae of Therapy: Case Report.

A 60-year-old woman, otherwise in a good health condition, was first admitted to the hospital with a year-long tingling sensations of the right half of the face, which gradually turned into severe neuralgia corresponding to maxillary (V2) and mandibular (V3) branches of the right trigeminal nerve. MRI scans of the head revealed an unusual hyperplastic or inflammatory changes along the brain base, cavernous sinus extending toward the pterygopalatine fossa, and lateral pterygoid on the right side. Meningioma was suspected and neuralgia was treated conservatively.

A case of concrescent tooth-A developmental anomaly in a 19th century skull from Uganda.

Dental abnormalities in archeological material such us concrescence or odontoma are rare cases often found accidentally, mostly during routine X-ray analysis or during macroscopic examination of the mastication apparatus. In this study, we present a rare case of concrescence between an upper left third molar and a supernumerary fourth molar in a 19th century skull from Uganda. Simultaneously, it is a critical revision of earlier studies on the same object (which considered this abnormality as an odontoma), using dental X-ray imaging and histological analysis.

Electronic Cigarettes and Awareness of Their Health Effects.

The use of electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes is strongly on the rise. The literature confirms that in the process of quitting smoking using an electronic device dispensing nicotine should be a transitional stage before the complete cessation of smoking. The aim of the present study was to assess the popularity of e-cigarettes, the underlying reasons for use of such nicotine products, and the level of awareness of health hazards associated with e-cigarettes.

The blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome or Bean syndrome is a rare disorder characterised by the presence of haemangiomas in the skin and gastrointestinal tract. These lesions are usually accompanied by chronic hypochromic anaemia resulting from gastrointestinal bleeding. The cause of this syndrome is unknown.

Diseases of the Upper Respiratory Tract in Preschool and School Age Children in Ambulatory Ear Nose Throat Practice.

The most common diseases of the upper respiratory tract in children treated by ear-nose-throat (ENT) specialists in ambulatory practice are infections, such as colds, rhinitis, sinusitis and pharyngitis, very frequently accompanied and promoted by chronic nasal obstructions of various etiology. These diseases, when treated incorrectly or for too long, cause frequent school absenteeism and may also lead to hearing disorders linked with acute or suppurative otitis. They may also habitually perpetuate abnormal breathing and result in occlusal disorders.

Vertigo with a Vestibular Dysfunction in Children During Respiratory Tract Infections.

Sudden balance disorders with violent vegetative symptoms (nausea and vomiting) pose a diagnostic and therapeutic problem. In children vertigo/dizziness with symptoms of vestibular dysfunction is rare, but as vascular etiology is unlikely in children such symptoms arouse concern. This article presents two cases of this type of vertigo.

Introduction: One of the most important factors involved in normal growth, maturation, physical activity and mental state is nutrition. Correct patterns formed in youth are necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The aim of the study was the evaluation of the dietary habits of medical students.

The location of the mental foramen is used in a number of maxillofacial surgical procedures and in anthropological examinations. The position of the mental foramen has been reported to vary in different ethnic groups and in different historical populations. The aim of this work was to analyse the topography of the mental foramen in mandibles from selected historical populations from the Pomeranian region in Poland.

Respiratory diseases in the late middle ages.

Respiratory diseases have beset humanity from the earliest times. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of respiratory diseases in the inhabitants of a large medieval city. We analyzed 110 skeletons, coming from 12 to 17th century of individuals of either gender.

Snoring and sleep disorders in children with hypertrophy of lymphoid tissue in the throat.

Hypertrophy of lymphoid tissue within the throat in children leads to a number of respiratory problems and sleep disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of the above-mentioned changes depending on the location of overgrown lymphoid tissue, BMI, and coexisting allergies. The study was based on a survey conducted in a group of 103 children aged 3-14 with a hypertrophy of lymphoid tissue requiring surgery.

The history of tuberculosis is long and very interesting, because before the isolation of mycobacteria and the finding of a cure, the disease mercilessly killed thousands of people and deprived doctors of hope. Robert Koch's momentous discovery was a major breakthrough in the fight against tuberculosis.

[Analysis of variation of orbital openings in contemporary skulls].

Introduction: The size and symmetry of the eye-socket have puzzled many medical and biological scientists. The orbit is a very complicated skull part because of the great number of bones involved in its structure, and its specific physiological function. The aim of our study was to estimate variations in the shape, size and position of the orbital openings in contemporary human skulls by using computer software.
