The regional distribution of a bolus of gas inhaled at residual volume (RV) is attributed to regional airway closure and is responsible for the phase IV of the single-breath washout during the following deflation. As bronchospasm increases the range of airway opening pressures through the lung, the regional distribution of the bolus could change with effects on the shape of the single-breath washout. We investigated the regional distribution of boluses inhaled at RV and their single-breath washouts during methacholine-induced bronchospasm in prone dogs.

A client with a shoplifting of 4 years' duration was treated by convert sensitization. To control for improvement attributable to demand characteristics alone, thought-stopping was utilized prior to the treatment period. Results indicated that the application of thought-stopping produced an increase in all dimensions (frequency, duration and intensity) of shoplifting urges which were brought under control and virtually eliminated by instituting covert sensitization.

The present study compared the bactericidal effects of lactoferrin on Streptococcus mutans with the bacteriostatic effects of iron deprivation. Growth (as determined by change in optical density) and macromolecular synthesis, as determined by incorporation of (14)C-labeled uracil, thymidine, and lysine, were inhibited by incubation of washed exponential-phase S.

After an initial 4-week baseline phase, during which daily records of headache activity and medication were kept, 24 migraine patients were randomly assigned to one of the four experimental conditions. Training sessions for all patients were of 50-min duration and occurred once per week for 8 weeks.

In this study, the influence of several physical conditions as well as the metabolic state of S. mutans on lactoferrin susceptibility were investigated.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLactoferrin is an iron-binding protein that has been detected in secretions that bathe human mucosal tissues. Previous studies have shown that, when this protein is in the iron-free state, it is capable of a direct bactericidal effect on Streptococcus mutans and Vibrio cholerae. The present study demonstrates variable susceptibilities for a variety of different microorganisms.

Two benign liver tumours are described in women who had taken oral contraceptives. These were cases of focal nodular hyperplasia and a liver cell adenoma. These lesions are benign, and were discovered on routine examination as they were not responsible for any clinical sign, as is usual except in cases of peritoneal rupture, where the patient presents with a dramatic hemoperitoneum.

The authors report 8 cases of sarcoma of the uterus and discuss the special characteristics of this type of lesion. It seems that the frequency of sarcoma of the uterus is more importnat than is usually thought : one case out of 100 fibromas in the authors' series. The pre-operative diagnosis is difficult, in particular the radiological signs described by Musset were only found in 2 cases out of 8.

An approach to the management of the behavioural manifestations of Wilson's Disease by operant technique is outlined. There was considerable improvement in the patient's ability to perform autonomously on this program. When the contingencies were changed the patient's behaviour deteriorated markedly, thereby suggesting that improvement in behaviour was not due to medication alone.

Measurement of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) in coke waste activated sludge can provide a simple method for estimating the levels of viable microbes in the sludge. However, the presence of inhibitors such as phenol in the sludge interferes when the luciferin-luciferase method is used to measure ATP. These inhibiting substances can be removed from the sludge before extraction of ATP by washing the cells with dilute sodium dodecyl sulfate.

In 37 cases a spontaneous regular decrease was observed, but it generally slowed down after the first week. In fact, only 30% of the total number of moles examined cleared up spontaneously within a month and 54% within 8 weeks.

The leukocyte mean corpuscular volume was measured in 61 cases of acute leukemia. The volume of blast cells allows a clear distinction between lymphoblastic and other varieties of acute leukemia. There seems to be good correlation between patients' age, leukocyte corpuscular volume, cytological and cytochemical findings.
