Histoplasma capsulatum is a dimorphic pathogenic fungus that produces a variety of self-limiting disease syndromes in healthy persons, but commonly disseminates in immunocompromised hosts. Although histoplasmosis has been recently described in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, it is an uncommon finding, occurring in fewer than 0.5 percent of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

To see if our experience correlated with these reports, we used DNA analysis by flow cytometry of propidium iodide-stained nuclei disaggregated from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue of biopsy specimens to retrospectively study 55 patients who had cutaneous stage I melanomas. The patients had been treated from 1977 to 1987 with a mean follow-up of 5.

All patients presented with a clinical picture suggesting acute appendicitis or a right lower quadrant mass. Malignancy was not suspected in any of the patients prior to surgery.

Cytometric studies have evaluated Hurthle cell neoplasms but not their reactive counterparts. DNA content of Hurthle cells in 22 cases of autoimmune thyroiditis was measured by flow cytometry and image content of Hurthle cells in 22 cases of autoimmune thyroiditis was measured by flow cytometry and image processing using nuclei extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue after microdissection of the Hurthle cell nodules.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA case of synchronous primary adenocarcinomas of the small and large bowel in a patient previously treated by transverse colectomy for cancerous polyps is presented. These new primaries were incidental findings during surgery for suspected recurrence of colonic carcinoma. Primary tumors of the small bowel are rare, and the diagnosis of primary adenocarcinoma of small bowel in the presence of primary adenocarcinoma of large bowel requires a high degree of suspicion and may well modify the prognostic outcome if detected early.

A case of pulmonary carcinoma with dual (glandular and endocrine) differentiation diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology is reported. By light microscopy, the neoplastic cells showed mucicarmine, periodic-acid Schiff, and Grimelius silver positivity. On immunostaining, neuron specific enolase, chromogranin, calcitonin and serotonin were demonstrated.

Cardiac involvement by metastatic neoplasms is relatively uncommon and usually occurs with widely disseminated disease. Ninety-five cases with cardiac metastases from autopsies performed over a 14-year period (1974-1987) at Loyola University Medical Center are reviewed. During this period, 3314 autopsies were performed with an average annual autopsy rate of 35%.

We have presented two cases of sarcoma, namely malignant fibrous histiocytoma and leiomyosarcoma, metastatic to the thyroid. Both were diagnosed clinically by fine needle aspiration cytology.

We have presented two cases of expansile, lytic lesions involving the distal radius and sacrococcyx, respectively. Initially, diagnosis was made by fine needle aspiration cytology, complemented by positive alpha-fetoprotein immunoperoxidase staining in one and ultrastructural evaluation in both.

In a 64-year-old woman woman who originally presented with chest pain and heart block, the initial clinical impression was ischemic heart disease. However, coronary angiography failed to reveal significant disease.

Mixed tumors of the uterine cervix are very rare. Their histogenesis, immunohistochemical profile, and prognosis are not well established.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA case of Merkel cell (trabecular) carcinoma metastatic to the parotid gland and diagnosed clinically by fine needle aspiration cytology is described. The primary tumor was on the left upper eyelid and had been resected four months earlier. This unusual presentation and the incidence of secondary tumors involving the parotid gland are discussed.
