Chickens treated by paintbrushing with glue distillate (used in shoe industries), hydrocarbon mixture and TOCP in hexane, developed paralysis (4/5); in these, we have demonstrated a diffuse degeneration of the myelinic sheath of the peripheral and central neurites. Besides TOCP, cyclohexane (because of its higher concentration in the glue distillate and in the hydrocarbon mixture) may be indicated as responsible for occupational neuropathy.

Four compounds (II g), (II i), (III b), (III g), showed weak activity in vitro against vaccinia virus.

This defect was found in two siblings with a mild form of mucolipidosis I. 12 sialyl-acid rich oligosacharides have been isolated from the urine of the patients.

The effect of lipophilicity on the activity against vaccinia virus was considered. Relative lipophilicities were measured by a reversed phase thin-layer chromatographic technique.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTwenty lymphoblastoid cell lines were typed with 38 antisera defining the 13 groups of the Merrit B-cell alloantigenic system, and results were compared with those of a 20-member CLL cell panel. While overall pattern of Merrit groups for the two types of cell population was similar, some sera in a number of groups showed unexpected negative cytotoxic reactions with lymphoid cells compared to other sera of the same group. However, in a number of instances, these negatively reacting cells could still specificity absorb out tb Merrit antibodies, suggesting that lymphoblastoid lines may show a higher incidence of the CYNAP (cytotoxicity-negative-absorption-positive) phenomenon than CLL cells.

After absorption, each serum was tested against a panel of CLL cells and normal unfractionated peripheral blood lymphocytes that had given positive reactions with the same serum prior to absorption. The optimal platelet volume for complete absorption of anti-HLA and full preservation of anti-Merrit B-cell activities in these sera was found to be 1/10 to 1/5 of the volume of serum.

Based upon reactions with both normal peripheral B-lymphocytes and a CLL panel, an additional 3 new specificities of the Merritt B-cell alloantigenic system have been defined. this brings the number of provisionally designated specificities to 22. The system of antigenic determinants is well represented on normal B-lymphocytes, and has a roughly similar distribution when compared to the CLL panel; however, evidence is presented which suggests that certain speficities may have significantly idfferent distributions on the 2 different panels, but the number of cells tested is low.

These can be roughly divided into two segregant series. The system is well represented on both homozygous and heterozygous B-type lymphoblastoid cell lines.

Six of these appeared possibly allelic and may represent a segregant series. The CLL panel was also fully typed for HLA and some degree of linkage dysequilibrium between Merrit and HLA seemed apparent from the data.

MLC responses to both types of stimulation correlated strongly suggesting that a) established lymphoblastoid line cells can express products of the MLR loc and b) fresh lymphocytes can be replaced by these long term lines in MLR typing. Two lines (LV-B and MS-B) derived from two MLR homozygous donors (lv and MS) were used throughout these experiments.
