Objectives: Maintained bone health is critical for independent living when aging. Currently, multimodal exercise regimes including weight-bearing exercises with impact are prescribed as optimal for maintaining bone health, while there is less consensus on the effects of resistance training at different intensities upon bone. Here we examined whether bone health was positively influenced by 1 year of supervised resistance training at two different intensities.

Plant roots form associations with both beneficial and pathogenic soil microorganisms. While members of the rhizosphere microbiome can protect against pathogens, the mechanisms are poorly understood. We hypothesized that the ability to form a robust biofilm on the root surface is necessary for the exclusion of pathogens; however, it is not known if the same biofilm formation components required are necessary WCS365 is a beneficial strain that is phylogenetically closely related to an opportunistic pathogen N2C3 and confers robust protection against N2C3 in the rhizosphere.

Acquired von Willebrand syndrome (aVWS) is a rare hematological disorder depicted by dysfunctional or deficient von Willebrand factor activity and can be associated with underlying hematological malignancies such as non-Hodgkins lymphoma (NHL). This case report examines a patient with aVWS secondary to NHL and highlights the challenges in managing bleeding and optimizing a patient for surgery. The case report will explore the multidisciplinary approach to recognizing aVWS, treatment modalities, and adjunctive measures to reduce bleeding risk as well as long-term management.

Introduction: Childhood adversity is associated with poor physical and mental health outcomes across the lifespan. Integration of health and social care may provide a solution to childhood adversity through practices of better detection and response. There is growing interest in the creation of child and family hubs that integrate health and social care but little literature that describes the development process.

Introduction: The 2018 published World Health Organisation (WHO) Europe physical activity factsheet reports, specify agreed targets for physical activity and articulate the need to improve the education of medical doctors and healthcare practitioners in order to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary time in people at risk and/or living with Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs). Given the dearth of relevant initiatives and the continuous need to increase physical activity participation towards better health management of NCDs, the aim of this study is to embed physical activity in the undergraduate curricula of future frontline healthcare professionals (medical doctors and allied health professions) in European countries.

Methods: The irtual dvice, urturing, uidance on niversal ction, esearch and evelopment for physical activity and sport engagement (VANGUARD) project consists of a collaborative partnership Consortium between six European Universities, WHO Europe and Ministry representatives that has been developed to implement physical activity in the curricula of medical schools and healthcare professions.

Physical function declines with age, accelerating during the 6th decade of life, primarily due to loss in muscle mass and strength. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of one year of heavy resistance training in older adults (62-70 years) on muscle mass and strength. Further, we investigated muscle characteristics after the intervention by obtaining muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis to compare muscle fiber characteristics between the heavy resistance training (HRT) (n=10) and the sedentary control group (CON) (n=10).

Purpose/objective: Psychometric network analysis (PNA) is an application of dynamic systems theory that can inform measurement of complex rehabilitation phenomena such as depressive symptom patterns in veterans and service members (V/SMs) after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study applied PNA to the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a common measure of depressive symptoms, in a sample of V/SMs with TBI at Years 1 and 2 (Y1-2) postinjury.

Research Method/design: A sample of 808 V/SMs with TBI participated, 594 contributing PHQ-9 data at Y1 and 585 at Y2.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS), methanethiol (MeSH) and dimethylsulfide (DMS) are abundant sulfur gases with roles in biogeochemical cycling, chemotaxis and/or climate regulation. Catabolism of the marine osmolyte dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is a major source of DMS and MeSH, but both also result from S-methylation of HS via MddA, an HS and MeSH S-methyltransferase whose gene is abundant in soil but scarce in marine environments. Here we identify the S-adenosine methionine (SAM)-dependent MeSH and HS S-methyltransferase 'MddH', which is widespread in diverse marine bacteria and some freshwater and soil bacteria.

Background: Devices measuring the macronutrient content of human milk are commonly used to assist with clinical decision-making. It is unknown if these devices accurately measure protein content in donor human milk (DHM). Our objective is to quantify the nitrogen sources and protein content in commercial DHM.

While philanthropic support for science has increased in the past decade, there is limited quantitative knowledge about the patterns that characterize it and the mechanisms that drive its distribution. Here, we map philanthropic funding to universities and research institutions based on IRS tax forms from 685,397 non-profit organizations. We identify nearly one million grants supporting institutions involved in science and higher education, finding that in volume and scope, philanthropy is a significant source of funds, reaching an amount that rivals some of the key federal agencies like the NSF and NIH.

Unprecedented heat waves can affect all persons, but some are more sensitive to the effects of heat, including children and adults with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, and outdoor workers. Many regions of the United States experienced record-breaking high temperatures in 2023, with populations exposed to extremely high temperatures for prolonged periods. CDC examined emergency department (ED) visits associated with heat-related illness (HRI) from the National Syndromic Surveillance Program and compared daily HRI ED visit rates during the warm-season months (May-September) of 2023 with those during 2018-2022.

Objectives: Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) declines with advancing and has also, independent of age, been shown to be predictive of all-cause mortality, morbidity, and poor clinical outcomes. In relation to the older patient, there is a particular wealth of evidence highlighting the relationship between low CRF and poor surgical outcomes. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is accepted as the gold-standard measure of CRF.

The impact of a scientific publication is often measured by the number of citations it receives from the scientific community. However, citation count is susceptible to well-documented variations in citation practices across time and discipline, limiting our ability to compare different scientific achievements. Previous efforts to account for citation variations often rely on a priori discipline labels of papers, assuming that all papers in a discipline are identical in their subject matter.

In the recent decade, we have seen major progress in quantifying the behaviors and the impact of scientists, resulting in a quantitative toolset capable of monitoring and predicting the career patterns of the profession. It is unclear, however, if this toolset applies to other creative domains beyond the sciences. In particular, while performance in the arts has long been difficult to quantify objectively, research suggests that professional networks and prestige of affiliations play a similar role to those observed in science, hence they can reveal patterns underlying successful careers.

During April 30-August 4, 2023, smoke originating from wildfires in Canada affected most of the contiguous United States. CDC used National Syndromic Surveillance Program data to assess numbers and percentages of asthma-associated emergency department (ED) visits on days with wildfire smoke, compared with days without wildfire smoke. Wildfire smoke days were defined as days when concentrations of particulate matter (particles generally ≤2.

The soybean endosymbiont Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens harbours the complete denitrification pathway that is catalysed by a periplasmic nitrate reductase (Nap), a copper (Cu)-containing nitrite reductase (NirK), a c-type nitric oxide reductase (cNor), and a nitrous oxide reductase (Nos), encoded by the napEDABC, nirK, norCBQD, and nosRZDFYLX genes, respectively. Induction of denitrification genes requires low oxygen and nitric oxide, both signals integrated into a complex regulatory network comprised by two interconnected cascades, FixLJ-FixK2-NnrR and RegSR-NifA. Copper is a cofactor of NirK and Nos, but it has also a role in denitrification gene expression and protein synthesis.

Background: Human milk is the preferred diet for very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 g) infants. When mother's own milk is unable to meet the needs of VLBW infants, donor human milk (DHM) is the preferred alternative. Unfortunately, the composition of DHM remains elusive and no comparative studies between preterm human milk and DHM have been performed previously.
