[The role of university hospitals in regional health care management for coping with the COVID-19 pandemic].

Introduction: The complex and dynamic situation in the current pandemic requires a regionally coordinated and interconnected cooperation between the different stakeholders within the health care system, such as the inpatient sector or the public health service. The aim of this study is to analyze health care management during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 with a focus on regional networking and communication structures.

Methods: As part of the BMBF-funded project "egePan Unimed", an online questionnaire on pandemic management was sent to the boards of all 35 German university hospitals in November 2020.

Effects of glyceryl glucoside on AQP3 expression, barrier function and hydration of human skin.

Background/aim: Aquaporins (AQPs) present in the epidermis are essential hydration-regulating elements controlling cellular water and glycerol transport. In this study, the potential of glyceryl glucoside [GG; alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-alpha-(1->2)-glycerol], an enhanced glycerol derivative, to increase the expression of AQP3 in vitro and ex vivo was evaluated.

Methods: In vitro studies with real-time RT-PCR and FACS measurements were performed to test the induction by GG (3% w/v) of AQP3 mRNA and protein in cultured human keratinocytes.

Postoperative sense of well-being and quality of life in breast cancer patients do not depend on type of primary surgery.

Background: In primary breast cancer, breast conserving surgery and mastectomy are equal options with regard to patient survival. We therefore investigated whether and how the type of surgery has impact on the patients' quality of life (QoL) in order to support individualized surgical concepts in treatment of breast cancer. 3 types of surgery are compared: breast-conserving surgery; modified radical mastectomy with or without primary reconstruction.

["Notebook computer" in combination with WWW-technology in multicenter clinical trials and for chronic patient care].

Our purpose was to determine conditions, under which the use of hand-held computers in the diagnosis and therapy of patients with chronic diseases seems to be handy. Two scenarios are presented showing the employment of these computers in a doctor's office and in multicenter clinical trials. Security-related aspects involved in transferring medical data via the internet are discussed.
