Seagrasses provide critical ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, sediment stabilisation and nursery habitat for juvenile fish. is ubiquitous within Australian and New Zealand estuaries, however, as a species is relatively understudied. We sourced seeds from a thermally affected east Australian estuary and investigated whether germination rates differed between ambient and thermally affected seeds over a variety of temperatures (16°C-28°C) to determine how seagrass systems might react in a warming climate.

This study characterised the abundance and diversity of archaeal communities and identified the environmental conditions shaping these microbial communities within six temperate estuaries along approximately 500 km of the New South Wales coastline, Australia. Estuarine sediments were found to exhibit significantly higher species richness than planktonic communities, with representative sequences from the Crenarchaeota phylum characterising each environment.

As global populations continue to increase, coastlines are seeing substantial increases in the level of urbanisation. Although measures are in place to minimise stress on fauna, they rarely consider the impact of anthropogenic noise.

Methods: We present a case of an adult patient with Dandy-Walker syndrome who presented to our epilepsy clinic with 2 years of new-onset seizures and cognitive decline and 1 year of psychotic symptoms.
Elasmobranchs are covered in scale-like structures called dermal denticles, comprising dentine and enameloid. These structures vary across the body of an individual and between species, and are frequently shed and preserved in marine sediments. With a good understanding of denticle morphology, current and historical elasmobranch diversity and abundance might be assessed from sediment samples.

Subjective cognitive concerns refer to a person's own perception of problems with cognitive functioning in everyday life. The authors investigated the presence and correlates of subjective cognitive concerns and the response to neurobehavioral therapy among adults with TBI and functional seizures (TBI+FS group).

The percutaneous approach does not allow direct visualization of the starting point at the metacarpal head. However, it limits soft tissue dissection and expedites the procedure.

Methods: Our group previously reported that in a sample of adults and children receiving CBD in an open-label expanded access program, there were several ASMs noted to increase in serum levels with increasing doses of CBD. We analyzed if an increased number of observations over time resulted in changes in potential interactions and if potential interactions were associated with time since enrollment, demographics, or the overall rating of adverse effects.
Cognitive functioning impacts clinical symptoms, treatment response, and quality of life in adults with functional/nonepileptic seizures (FS/NES), but no study to date examines effects of behavioral FS/NES treatment on cognition in these patients. We hypothesized that there would be a reduction in cognitive symptoms in participants with FS/NES and traumatic brain injury (TBI) following neurobehavioral therapy (NBT). We also hypothesized that select seizure-related, medication, subjective cognitive, and mental health symptoms would be negatively correlated with improvements in cognitive performance after NBT.

Pollution impacts can vary with site-specific factors that span sources, rainfall and oceanographic characteristics. To effectively manage pollution, we need to understand how these factors interact.

Their relative importance likely varies across spatial scales, but focus has primarily been on free-living communities within well-connected aquatic environments rather than less connected island-like habitats such as estuaries, and key host-associated communities within these systems. Here we sampled both free-living (seawater and sediment) and host-associated (estuarine fish hindgut microbiome, Pelates sexlineatus) communities across six temperate Australian estuaries spanning ∼500 km.

We hypothesized that patients with FS would exhibit white matter plasticity in the uncinate fasciculus, fornix/stria terminalis, cingulum, and corticospinal tract following NBT that would correlate with improvements in affective symptoms, postconcussive symptoms, and quality of life (QOL).
Methods: Forty-two patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and FS (TBI+FS) underwent NBT and provided pre-/postintervention neuroimaging and behavioral data; 47 controls with TBI without FS (TBI-only) completed the same measures but did not receive NBT.
Metal contamination is a global issue impacting biodiversity in urbanised estuaries. Traditional methods to assess biodiversity are time consuming, costly and often exclude small or cryptic organisms due to difficulties with morphological identification. Metabarcoding approaches have been increasingly recognised for their utility in monitoring, however studies have focused on freshwater and marine systems despite the ecological significance of estuaries.

Our null hypothesis is that a standard-dose, short-term ketorolac exposure does not increase the nonunion rate of a first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) arthrodesis.
Methods: In a retrospective cohort study, we included 181 primary first MTPJ arthrodeses from 2016 to 2020 in a single surgeon practice.
Recreational fishing waste, produced from processing catches at shore-based fish cleaning facilities and discarded into adjacent waters, is foraged by various aquatic species. However, the potential alterations to the diet of consumers of these resources are poorly studied. Smooth stingrays (Bathytoshia brevicaudata) are a large demersal mesopredatory ray species and common scavenger of recreational fishing discards around southern Australia.

These species are, however, among the most challenging in which to establish spatiotemporally integrated diets. We introduce a novel integration of stable isotopes with a multidimensional nutritional niche framework that addresses the challenges of establishing spatiotemporally integrated nutritional niches in wild populations, and apply the framework to explore individual diet specialisation in a marine apex predator, the white shark Carcharodon carcharias.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRationale: Isotope analysis can be used to investigate the diets of predators based on assimilation of nitrogen and carbon isotopes from prey. Recent work has shown that tissues taken from legs, antennae or abdomen of lobsters can give different indications of diet, but this has never been evaluated for Sagmariasus verreauxi (eastern rock lobster). Work is now needed to prevent erroneous conclusions being drawn about lobster food webs, and undertaking this work could lead to developing non-lethal sampling methodologies.

Microbes are gaining recognition as effective environmental indicators, however, the response of host associated communities to stressors remains poorly understood. We examined microbial communities from seawater, sediments and the estuarine fish Pelates sexlineatus, in Australia's largest urbanised estuary, and hypothesised that anthropogenic contamination would be reflected in the microbiology of these sample types.

Although burnout rates of up to 50% to 60% among orthopedic surgeons have been reported, no studies have evaluated burnout among orthopedic generalists and subspecialists. The primary goal of this study was to examine the prevalence of burnout among orthopedic disciplines.

It was revealed that most variation in metal accumulation occurred among trees and branches, with insignificant variation between sites and among leaves.
