Purpose: Primary spinal infections (PSIs) are a group of infectious diseases characterized by inflammation of the end plate-disk unit or its surroundings. PSI is considered more prevalent and aggressive among patients with chronic immunocompromised states. Association of PSIs, immunocompromising cancers, and hemoglobinopathies has not been systematically analyzed.

COVID-19 Impact Among Spine Surgeons in Latin America.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak in spine surgeons in Latin America.

Monosegmental combined anterior posterior instrumentation for the treatment of a severe lumbar tuberculous spondylodiscitis: case report and literature review.

Spinal tuberculosis (Pott disease) can produce severe deformities when it is not properly treated. Long instrumentations through single or combined double approaches are usually required to prevent and correct the deformity. The authors present a case of severe deformity secondary to tuberculous spondylodiscitis in the lumbar spine treated with a monosegmental instrumentation through a double approach in a patient with idiopathic scoliosis.

Migration of the Anterior Spinal Rod to the Right Thigh, a Rare Complication of Anterior Spinal Instrumentations: A Case Report and a Literature Review.

Posterior and anterior fusion procedures with instrumentation are well-known surgical treatments for scoliosis. Rod migration has been described as unusual complication in anterior spinal instrumentations; migration beyond pelvis is a rare complication. A 32-year-old female presented to the consultant with right thigh pain, rod migration was diagnosed, rod extraction by minimal approach was performed, and spinal instrumentation after nonunion diagnosis was underwent.

Use of clomipramine as chemotherapy of the chronic phase of Chagas disease.

Chagas infection is a major endemic disease affecting Latin American countries. The persistence of Trypanosoma cruzi generates a chronic inflammatory reactivity that induces an immune response directed to the host's tissues. The effectiveness of the treatment in the chronic phase is still unsatisfactory due, amongst other reasons, to the collateral effects of the drugs used.
