Access to the internet and mobile applications in a mixed population emergency department: A repeated cross-sectional survey.

Objective: This study aimed to assess patients' interest in education content delivered through electronic modalities and identify trends in internet access and use among emergency department patients of various socioeconomic statuses.

Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional survey with 50 questions was completed by 241 English and Spanish-speaking patients in 2014 and repeated with 253 participants in 2019 at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center's Emergency Department (UCIMCED).

Light-induced switching between singlet and triplet superconducting states.

While the search for topological triplet-pairing superconductivity has remained a challenge, recent developments in optically stabilizing metastable superconducting states suggest a new route to realizing this elusive phase. Here, we devise a testable theory of competing superconducting orders that permits ultrafast switching to an opposite-parity superconducting phase in centrosymmetric crystals with strong spin-orbit coupling. Using both microscopic and phenomenological models, we show that dynamical inversion symmetry breaking with a tailored light pulse can induce odd-parity (spin triplet) order parameter oscillations in a conventional even-parity (spin singlet) superconductor, which when driven strongly can send the system to a competing minimum in its free energy landscape.

Anodically Bonded Photoacoustic Transducer: An Approach towards Wafer-Level Optical Gas Sensors.

We present a concept for a wafer-level manufactured photoacoustic transducer, suitable to be used in consumer-grade gas sensors. The transducer consists of an anodically bonded two-layer stack of a blank silicon wafer and an 11 µm membrane, which was wet-etched from a borosilicate wafer. The membrane separates two cavities; one of which was hermetically sealed and filled with CO during the anodic bonding and acts as an infrared absorber.

Case Report of Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura in a Previously Healthy Adult.

Unlabelled: This case report details the presentation of a 24-year-old male presenting with headache, palpitations, gingival bleeding, and pallor. The ultimate diagnosis of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare but life-threatening condition which is typically hallmarked by thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) and dysfunctional ADAMTS13 enzymatic activity. This patient displayed classically described findings, including marked anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acutely elevated creatinine as well as a brief period of newly onset word-finding difficulty while in the emergency department.

Circulating non‑coding RNA‑biomarker potential in neoadjuvant chemotherapy of triple negative breast cancer?

Due to the positive association between neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and the promising early response rates of patients with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), including probabilities of pathological complete response, NACT is increasingly used in TNBC management. Liquid biopsy‑based biomarkers with the power to diagnose the early response to NACT may support established monitoring tools, which are to a certain extent imprecise and costly. Simple serum‑ or urine‑based analyses of non‑coding RNA (ncRNA) expression may allow for fast, minimally‑invasive testing and timely adjustment of the therapy regimen.

Socioeconomic and geographical disparities in prescription and illicit opioid-related overdose deaths in Orange County, California, from 2010-2014.

: Reports indicate a geographic effect of socioeconomic inequalities on the occurrence of opioid-related fatal overdoses. This study aims to (1) estimate the rates of opioid-related overdoses, (2) estimate the association of benzodiazepine co-ingestion with opioid-related deaths, (3) estimate associations between socioeconomic indicators and opioid-related deaths, and (4) map the distribution of fatal overdoses, in Orange County (OC), California. : An ecologic study was conducted of all opioid- related deaths (1205 total) from 2010 to 2014 obtained from the OC Coroner Division database (1065 OC residents, 55 nonresidents, 85 OC homeless) (analyzed 2016-2017).

A previously healthy young male developed unilateral pulmonary oedema immediately after re-expansion of an intentionally collapsed lung after transaxillary sympathectomy. The pulmonary oedema was localised to the contralateral, uncollapsed lung.

Facilitation of mechanical ventilation in status asthmaticus with continuous intravenous thiopental.

Mechanical ventilation in status asthmaticus is associated with a significant mortality and morbidity. To facilitate intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV), we have used continuous IV thiopental (thiopentone) together with traditional ventilatory techniques. With this policy, we were able to achieve rapid correction of arterial blood gas tensions in a group of 20 severe asthmatics requiring IPPV.

An exploratory study of mother-child interaction during the second year of life.

The study employed a naturalistic, semistructured situation for the observation of mother-child behavior. Cardiac denervation supersensitivity produced in guinea pigs by 6-hydroxy-dopamine.

The effects of chemical sympathectomy with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OH-DA) on the sensitivity of guinea-pig heart to catecholamines were studied. Heart rate at rest and chronotropic effects of catecholamines remained unchanged after chemical sympathectomy, while the arrhythmogenic effects of epinephrine, norepinephrine and isoprenaline were potentiated markedly. Our results indicate that chemical sympathectomy with 6-OH-DA produced post synaptic denervation supersensitivity in the heart ventricles.

Uncontrollable life-threatening status asthmaticus--an indicator for termination of pregnancy by cesarean section.

Two pregnant women with severe status asthmaticus unresponsive to intensive medical treatment are reported. Termination of pregnancies by cesarean section was followed by a dramatic improvement within 24 h. Termination of pregnancy is indicated in life-threatening status asthmaticus.

Fracture healing in rabbits after osteotomy using the CO2 laser.

Fracture healing was studied in 28 rabbits after their femurs had been osteomized using the carbon dioxide laser. Twenty rabbits whose femurs were osteotomized by means of a Gigli saw served as the control group. Fracture healing was initially delayed in the laser cut femurs, yet after 60 days no significant difference between the groups could be detected.

Healing of the operative fascial defect after repair of huge midline hernias with the reverse sheath method.

An experiment was carried out to ascertain the fate of the bared muscle following the repair of huge midline hernias with the "reverse sheath" method. Thirty-five patients have undergone operation by this method over the past five years, with excellent results. Experimental stripping of abdominal fascia was done on 35 rats.

Bone growth alterations resulting from application of CO2 laser beam to the epiphyseal growth plates. An experimental study in rabbits.

The CO2 laser beam was used to create defects 3 mm in depth in the distal growth plate of one femur in a group of 59 rabbits. In most of the 32 rabbits in which the defect was created on the lateral aspect of the epiphyseal plate the procedure resulted in the subsequent development of valgus deformity and shortening of the femur. In most of the 27 rabbits in which defects were produced both medially and laterally to the epiphyseal plate there was a subsequent marked shortening of the bones.
