Background: Research work has shown that hippocampal subfields are atrophic to varying extents in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. However, studies examining the functional implications of subfield-specific hippocampal damage in early MS are limited. We aim to gain insights into the relationship between hippocampal atrophy and memory function by investigating the correlation between global and regional hippocampal atrophy and memory performance in early MS patients.

Introduction: Lesion size index (LSI) was introduced with the use of Tacticath™ and as a surrogate of lesion quality. The metric used to achieve the predetermined values involves combined information of contact force (CF), power and radiofrequency time. Rapid atrial pacing (RAP) and high-frequency low-tidal volume ventilation (HFLTV) independently or in combination improve catheter stability and CF and quality of lesions.

Background: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) reduces functional capacity and raises cardiovascular risks, but underdiagnosis is common, resulting in less comprehensive care than other cardiovascular conditions. While diabetes has long been viewed as a key risk factor for PAD, recent studies indicate that its impact is influenced by the presence of concurrent cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of this study is to elucidate the intricate relationship between the prevalence of PAD, diabetic complications, and cardiovascular risk factors among asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Aims: Inflammageing, the age-related systemic increase of proinflammatory factors, has been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and cancer in the elderly. Chronic inflammation is believed to be a causative factor in the development of diabetic complications. However, exactly how type 2 diabetes impacts the inflammatory state of the immune system is incompletely characterised.

Introduction: mutations are responsible for Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC), a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease. Patients harbouring heterozygous mutations may rarely show parkinsonism or dementia. Here, we describe for the first time a large family with an apparently autosomal dominant late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) harbouring a novel heterozygous mutation.

Background: There are multiple factors in both technique and substrate that lead to recurrence of atrial fibrillation after ablation. We sought to examine whether the degree of heart rate increase (HRI) caused by concurrent high-power-short-duration (HPSD) incidental parasympathetic denervation during AF ablation predicts long term success. Between December 2018 and December 2021, prospectively enrolled 214 patients who presented in sinus rhythm at AF ablation.

Background: Better contact force (CF) and catheter stability (CS) during atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation are associated with higher success rate. Changes in CF and CS are observed during respiratory movements and cardiac contraction. Previous studies have suggested that rapid atrial pacing (RAP) and high-frequency, low-tidal-volume ventilation (HFLTV) independently or in combination improve CS and CF and quality of lesions.

Introduction: Amiodarone is a potent antiarrhythmic medication used to treat life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias; however, its well-established adverse effect is a thyroid disorder. Amiodarone-induced thyroiditis (AIT), a clinical entity involving two types with different etiopathology and treatment approaches, may occur at the beginning or even several years after amiodarone treatment discontinuation. The toxicity profile of amiodarone becomes especially important in young patients with lifelong cardiac disorders, which are often refractory to other antiarrhythmic drugs.

Memory CD8 T cells play an important role in the protection against breakthrough infections with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Whether the route of antigen exposure impacts these cells at a functional level is incompletely characterized. Here, we compare the memory CD8 T cell response against a common SARS-CoV-2 epitope after vaccination, infection, or both.

Exercise has many beneficial effects for our body, but can become detrimental at high intensity, especially for our immune system. Little is known about the underlying mechanism of impaired immune functionality under conditions of intense physical strain. Freedivers, people who dive to high depths on a single breath, perform extreme exercise under anaerobic conditions.

Different results are described after atrial fibrillation ablation and multiple predictors of recurrence are well established. Evaluate and analyze if heart rate increase (HRI) during a first atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation with low-power long-duration (LPLD) and subsequently with high-power short-duration (HPSD) can impact. Retrospectively analyzed 340 consecutive patients (pts) undergoing first AF ablation.

The recent pandemic of COVID-19 has made abundantly clear that Type 2 diabetes (T2D) increases the risk of more frequent and more severe viral infections. At the same time, pro-inflammatory cytokines of an anti-viral Type-I profile promote insulin resistance and form a risk factor for development of T2D. What this illustrates is that there is a reciprocal, detrimental interaction between the immune and endocrine system in the context of T2D.

Teneurins are type II transmembrane proteins comprised of four phylogenetically conserved homologs (Ten-1-4) that are highly expressed during neurogenesis. An additional bioactive peptide named teneurin C-terminal-associated peptide (TCAP-1-4) is present at the carboxyl terminal of teneurins. The possible correlation between the Ten/TCAP system and brain injuries has not been explored yet.

Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is a minimal invasive procedure used to resolve carotid occlusion that can be affected by peri-procedural complications. Statin use before CAS has shown to reduce peri-procedural risk and improve survival, though time-dependent cofactors that influence mortality has not been considered. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term survival of patients who undergo CAS considering new occurred major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) as time-dependent cofactor.

The use of anaesthetic drugs in the treatment of oral aphthosis is one of the pharmaceutical possibilities that a doctor can use for the most painful forms. Normally, Lidocaine or Diclofenac is used to treat this disease, but they can be used for a very limited time and so they are of little practical use. In this study, the authors have used Ropivacaine whose pharmaceutical kinetics allows the analgesic effect to be active for 60 to 90 minutes.

Pathogenic Leptospira strains are responsible for leptospirosis, a worldwide emerging zoonotic disease. These spirochetes are unique amongst bacteria because of their corkscrew-like cell morphology and their periplasmic flagella. Motility is reported as an important virulence determinant, probably favoring entry and dissemination of pathogenic Leptospira in the host.
