Parenting interventions can improve parenting outcomes, with widespread implications for children's developmental trajectories. Relational savoring (RS) is a brief attachment-based intervention with high potential for dissemination. Here we examine data from a recent intervention trial in order to isolate the mechanisms by which savoring predicts reflective functioning (RF) at treatment follow-up through an examination of the content of savoring sessions (specificity, positivity, connectedness, safe haven/secure base, self-focus, child-focus).

Resurgence of Shoshin beriberi during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This report describes two patients who presented with severe type B lactic acidosis and shock, initially thought to be due to bowel ischaemia/myocardial infarction and pulmonary sepsis, respectively. This led to a delay in the diagnosis of thiamine deficiency. In both cases there was a dramatic response to intravenous thiamine, confirming the diagnosis of Shoshin beriberi.

As Alzheimer's disease is a disease of advanced age, we hypothesize that older individuals on ADT may be at greatest risk. We conducted a retrospective multi-institutional analysis among 16,888 individuals with prostate cancer using an informatics approach.

Association Between Androgen Deprivation Therapy and Risk of Dementia.

Importance: A growing body of evidence supports a link between androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and cognitive dysfunction, including Alzheimer disease. However, it is currently unknown whether ADT may contribute to the risk of dementia more broadly.

Objective: To use an informatics approach to examine the association of ADT as a treatment for prostate cancer with the subsequent development of dementia (eg, senile dementia, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and Alzheimer dementia).

Understanding Parent Perspectives Concerning Adolescents' Online Access to Personal Health Information.

Background: Although today's youth are interested in using the internet to access and manage information related to their health, little information exists about parental attitudes towards the release of health information to adolescents.

Methods: Structured interviews were conducted with the parents of 83 adolescents detained at a large Northern California juvenile detention facility to examine parental perceptions toward allowing their children online access to their own health information.

Results: The majority of parents interviewed (70%) wanted their children to have online access to their own health information.

Predictive modeling of risk factors and complications of cataract surgery.

Purpose: Cataract surgery is generally safe; however, severe complications exist. Preexisting conditions are known to predispose patients to intraoperative and postoperative complications. This study quantifies the relationship between aggregated preoperative risk factors and cataract surgery complications, and builds a model predicting outcomes on an individual level, given a constellation of patient characteristics.

Immunization Coverage Among Juvenile Justice Detainees.

This study sought to (1) quantify the baseline immunization coverage of adolescents entering the juvenile justice system and (2) assess the effect of detention-based care on immunization coverage in youth. A cross-sectional retrospective chart review was performed of 279 adolescents detained at a large juvenile detention facility. Only 3% of adolescents had received all study immunizations prior to detention.

A time-indexed reference standard of adverse drug reactions.

Undetected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) pose a major burden on the health system. Data mining methodologies designed to identify signals of novel ADRs are of deep importance for drug safety surveillance. The development and evaluation of these methodologies requires proper reference benchmarks.

Renal function and ear, nose, throat involvement in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis: prospective data from the European Vasculitis Society clinical trials.

Objective: We investigated whether ENT involvement is associated with renal biopsy findings and renal function in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV).

Methods: Newly diagnosed AAV patients derived from three international, multicentre trials were included. Immunosuppression for progressive membranous nephropathy: a UK randomised controlled trial.

Background: Membranous nephropathy leads to end-stage renal disease in more than 20% of patients. Although immunosuppressive therapy benefits some patients, trial evidence for the subset of patients with declining renal function is not available. We aimed to assess whether immunosuppression preserves renal function in patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy with declining renal function.

Internet access and attitudes toward online personal health information among detained youth.

Objective: To assess Internet access and usage patterns among high-risk youth involved in the juvenile justice system, and to determine if health information technology tools might play a useful role in more actively engaging this population in their health care.

Methods: A sample of 79 youth between the ages of 13 and 18 years old underwent a structured interview while detained in a large, Northern California juvenile detention facility. After an institutional review board-approved assent/consent process, youth discussed their typical Internet use when not detained, as well as their attitudes toward online access to their personal health information (PHI).

Special requirements for electronic medical records in adolescent medicine.

Adolescents are a group likely to seek and, perhaps, most likely to benefit from electronic access to health information. Despite significant advances in technical capabilities over the past decade, to date neither electronic medical record vendors nor many health care systems have adequately addressed the functionality and process design considerations needed to protect the confidentiality of adolescent patients in an electronic world. We propose a shared responsibility for creating the necessary tools and processes to maintain the adolescent confidentiality required by most states: (1) system vendors must provide key functionality in their products (adolescent privacy default settings, customizable privacy controls, proxy access, and health information exchange compatibility), and (2) health care institutions must systematically address relevant adolescent confidentiality policies and process design issues.
