Signal Transducers (STATs) 1 and 3 and Activator Protein 1 (AP-1) are transcription factors involved in the development of malignancy in colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Matrix Metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) is a protease frequently dysregulated in de-differentiated and invasive cancer cells. Its expression is influenced by STAT and AP-1 transcription factors.

Comparison of baroreflex sensitivity estimated from ECG R-R and inter-systolic intervals obtained by finger plethysmography and radial tonometry.

Spontaneous BRS estimates may considerable vary according to the technique of blood pressure and heart rate assessment. To optimise and standardise BRS estimation for clinical use we evaluated possible differences between spontaneous BRS indices estimated from either finger plethysmography or radial tonometry. Forty-five healthy volunteers underwent simultaneous recordings of electrocardiogram, finger plethysmography and radial tonometry in supine position and during 60° head-up tilt.

Background: The assessment of baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) has emerged as prognostic tool in cardiology. Although available computer-assisted methods, measuring spontaneous fluctuations of heart rate and blood pressure in the time and frequency domain are easily applicable, they do not allow for quantification of BRS during cardiovascular adaption processes. This, however, seems an essential criterion for clinical application.

Immunotherapy in bladder cancer with keyhole-limpet hemocyanin: a randomized study.

A randomized, controlled study was begun in 1982 on the effect of keyhole-limpet hemocyanin and mitomycin C in the prevention of recurrent superficial bladder cancer (stages pTa to pT1, grades 0 to 3) in 44 patients. All tumors were resected and all patients were presumed to be free of tumor at initiation of the prophylactic instillations. Prostheses of the trigonum vesicae made of silicone rubber and covered with a textile layer were implanted in 18 mini pigs. Investigations were done in two series: in the first the prostheses were covered on the outside with a narrow woven textile layer, in the second with Dacron-velour. While the narrow woven textile-lined prostheses were rejected into the urinary bladder after a short period, the Dacron-velour-lined prostheses remained well attached to the bladder wall.
