Signal Transducers (STATs) 1 and 3 and Activator Protein 1 (AP-1) are transcription factors involved in the development of malignancy in colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Matrix Metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) is a protease frequently dysregulated in de-differentiated and invasive cancer cells. Its expression is influenced by STAT and AP-1 transcription factors.

Spontaneous BRS estimates may considerable vary according to the technique of blood pressure and heart rate assessment. To optimise and standardise BRS estimation for clinical use we evaluated possible differences between spontaneous BRS indices estimated from either finger plethysmography or radial tonometry. Forty-five healthy volunteers underwent simultaneous recordings of electrocardiogram, finger plethysmography and radial tonometry in supine position and during 60° head-up tilt.

Biological rhythms, describing the temporal variation of biological processes, are a characteristic feature of complex systems. The analysis of biological rhythms can provide important insights into the pathophysiology of different diseases, especially, in cardiovascular medicine. In the field of the autonomic nervous system, heart rate variability (HRV) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) describe important fluctuations of blood pressure and heart rate which are often analyzed by Fourier transformation.

Objective: The use of infusion filters in pediatrics is controversially discussed. Their application is an excellent opportunity to prevent complications, but there are researchers, who do not see any advantage in using inline filters. This paper describes the interaction of five different drugs with a positively charged as opposed to an uncharged polyethersulfone (PES(+) versus PES(0)) membrane.

Background: Differences in spontaneous and drug-induced baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) have been attributed to its different operating ranges. The current study attempted to compare BRS estimates during cardiovascular steady-state and pharmacologically stimulation using an innovative algorithm for dynamic determination of baroreflex gain.

Methodology/principal Findings: Forty-five volunteers underwent the modified Oxford maneuver in supine and 60° tilted position with blood pressure and heart rate being continuously recorded.

Aberrant activation of STAT3 in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) tissue is correlated with elevated expression of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1). We analyzed transcriptional regulation of the human MMP-1 promoter in CRC cells by tyrosine phosphorylated (pY-) STAT3. One of six putative STAT binding elements within a 4.

Background: The assessment of baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) has emerged as prognostic tool in cardiology. Although available computer-assisted methods, measuring spontaneous fluctuations of heart rate and blood pressure in the time and frequency domain are easily applicable, they do not allow for quantification of BRS during cardiovascular adaption processes. This, however, seems an essential criterion for clinical application.

Purpose: Infusion filters, 0.2 mum, are commonly used in intensive care units as in-line filters to minimize particle and microbiological burden on patients. These filters usually contain either a positively charged or an uncharged membrane.

To evaluate the impact of different ECG sampling frequencies on parameters of spectral and baroreflex analysis. Spectral and baroreflex analyses were performed in the EUROBAVAR data set (46 recordings of 23 persons) using the original ECG sampling frequency of 500 Hz and - simulated - sampling frequencies of 200 and 100 Hz. For this analysis, the technique of trigonometric regressive spectral (TRS) analysis was used.

A randomized, controlled study was begun in 1982 on the effect of keyhole-limpet hemocyanin and mitomycin C in the prevention of recurrent superficial bladder cancer (stages pTa to pT1, grades 0 to 3) in 44 patients. All tumors were resected and all patients were presumed to be free of tumor at initiation of the prophylactic instillations. Before the bladder instillation program was begun all patients in the keyhole-limpet hemocyanin group Ia were immunized with 1 mg.

Prostheses of the trigonum vesicae made of silicone rubber and covered with a textile layer were implanted in 18 mini pigs. Investigations were done in two series: in the first the prostheses were covered on the outside with a narrow woven textile layer, in the second with Dacron-velour. While the narrow woven textile-lined prostheses were rejected into the urinary bladder after a short period, the Dacron-velour-lined prostheses remained well attached to the bladder wall.
