Myxococcus xanthus is a soil-dwelling, gram-negative bacterium that during nutrient deprivation is capable of undergoing morphogenesis from a vegetative rod to a spherical, stress-resistant spore inside a domed-shaped, multicellular fruiting body. Purpose: In 1999 the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) adopted more-restrictive guidelines for vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC). This study assesses trends in VBAC in California and compares neonatal and maternal mortality rates among women attempting VBAC delivery or undergoing repeat cesarean delivery before and after this guideline revision.

Methods: The 1996 through 2002 California Birth Statistical Master Files were used to identify 386,232 California residents who previously gave birth by cesarean delivery and had a singleton birth planned in a California hospital.

Objectives: Pediatric cardiac arrest patients and adult traumatic arrest patients are perceived as more difficult to endotracheally intubate than adult cardiac arrest patients. The study hypothesis was that these populations were at higher risk of endotracheal intubation failure compared with adult cardiac arrest patients and that paramedics would more frequently defer attempts to intubate these patients.

Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study analyzing oral endotracheal intubations on pediatric cardiac arrest, adult traumatic arrest, and adult cardiac arrest patients over 66 months.

Accurate determination of functional interactions among proteins at the genome level remains a challenge for genomic research. Here we introduce a genome-scale approach to functional protein annotation--phylogenomic mapping--that requires only sequence data, can be applied equally well to both finished and unfinished genomes, and can be extended beyond single genomes to annotate multiple genomes simultaneously. We have developed and applied it to more than 200 sequenced bacterial genomes.

The dif operon is essential for fruiting body formation, fibril (exopolysaccharide) production and social motility of Myxococcus xanthus. The dif locus contains a gene cluster homologous to chemotaxis genes such as mcp (difA), cheW (difC), cheY (difD), cheA (difE) and cheC (difF), as well as an unknown ORF called difB. This study used yeast two-hybrid analysis to investigate possible interactions between Dif proteins, and determined that DifA, C, D and E interact in a similar fashion to chemotaxis proteins of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis.

UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) isozymes catalyze detoxification of numerous chemical toxins present in our daily diet and environment by conjugation to glucuronic acid. The special properties and enzymatic mechanism(s) that enable endoplasmic reticulum-bound UGT isozymes to convert innumerable structurally diverse lipophiles to excretable glucuronides are unknown. Inhibition of cellular UGT1A7 and UGT1A10 activities and of [33P]orthophosphate incorporation into immunoprecipitable proteins after exposure to curcumin or calphostin-C indicated that the isozymes are phosphorylated.

Myxococcus xanthus is a gliding bacterium that possesses two motility systems, the adventurous (A-motility) and social (S-motility) systems. A-motility is used for individual cell gliding, while S-motility is used for gliding in multicellular groups. Video microscopy studies showed that nla24 cells are non-motile on agar surfaces, suggesting that the nla24 gene product is absolutely required for both A-motility and S-motility under these assay conditions.

Expression of the previously reported Tn5lac Omega4469 insertion in Myxococcus xanthus cells is regulated by the starvation response. Interested in learning more about the starvation response, we cloned and sequenced the region containing the insertion. Our analysis shows that the gene fusion is located in an open reading frame that we have designated nsd (nutrient sensing/utilizing defective) and that its expression is driven by a sigma70-like promoter.

Previous studies have shown that hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA levels are significantly increased in rats allowed free access to exercise wheels and/or administered antidepressant medications. Enhancement of BDNF may be crucial for the clinical effect of antidepressant interventions. Since increased function of the noradrenergic and/or serotonergic systems is thought to be an important initial mechanism of antidepressant medications, we sought to test the hypothesis that noradrenergic or serotonergic function is essential for the increased BDNF transcription occurring with exercise.
