Veterinarians are better prepared to assist producers in disease prevention, control, and eradication when they understand the relationships among the agent, the host, and the environment. Although vaccination may reduce disease prevalence in a herd, test and selective removal remain the most common method of disease control.

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis infection, salmonellosis, and bovine leukosis virus are important dairy and beef cattle diseases from a health perspective. For herds without infection, keeping the disease out through testing of source herds should be prioritized. For herds with infection, control programs should be instituted and followed to reduce the prevalence and ultimately eliminate the disease.

Certain classes of antibiotics, including tetracyclines and macrolides, are known to exert immune suppressive effects in other species but the immune modulatory effects of these antibiotics have not been previously studied in cattle. To address this question, we investigated the effects of oxytetracycline, gamithromycin, and tulathromycin on T cell and macrophage responses to activation, using in vitro assays. In addition, we assessed the impact of these antibiotics on T cell responses in vivo following treatment of healthy cattle with currently recommended doses of each of the three antibiotics.

Food system transformation requires a better understanding of the negative and positive externalities involved in food production and consumption. Although negative externalities have received substantial attention, positive externalities have been largely overlooked. True Cost Accounting (TCA) is an economic assessment aimed at accounting for externalities in food systems.

Background: There is a growing awareness of the need to include people's lived experiences in health decision-making. While much progress has been made in this field, exclusionary patterns persist regarding migrant participation in health research. The aim of this scoping review was to examine the available literature around the use of music as an arts-based research (ABR) method in migrant health research in order to extend knowledge of creative methods and tools used for migrant participation in health research.

The onset of lactation and the subsequent habituation to the milking routine is a stressful period, particularly for primiparous (PRI) cows. The objective of this study was to describe the dynamics of milking unit kick-off (KO) behavior in PRI cows during the first 3 mo of lactation, considering multiparous (MUL) cows as a reference for comparison. In addition, the potential associations between KO and milk yield and mastitis presentation were investigated.

There is a need for both feasible and enjoyable physical activity programmes for people on a cancer journey. Emerging evidence suggests that dance can have a positive effect on health and well-being in this cohort. We aimed to synthesize the quantitative and qualitative literature exploring the effectiveness and impact of community dance interventions in people with all types and stages of cancer.

Given the rapid potential spread of agricultural pathogens, and the lack of vaccines for many, there is an important unmet need for strategies to induce rapid and non-specific immunity against these viral and bacterial threats. One approach to the problem is to generate non-specific immune responses at mucosal surfaces to rapidly protect from entry and replication of both viral and bacterial pathogens. Using complexes of charged nanoparticle liposomes with both antiviral and antibacterial toll-like receptor (TLR) nucleic acid ligands (termed liposome-TLR complexes or ), we have previously demonstrated considerable induction of innate immune responses in nasal and oropharyngeal tissues and protection from viral and bacterial pathogens in mixed challenge studies in rodents, cattle, and companion animals.

Right ventricular (RV) failure is the major determinant of outcome in pulmonary hypertension (PH). Calves exposed to 2-wk hypoxia develop severe PH and unlike rodents, hypoxia-induced PH in this species can lead to right heart failure. We, therefore, sought to examine the molecular and structural changes in the RV in calves with hypoxia-induced PH, hypothesizing that we could identify mechanisms underlying compensated physiological function in the face of developing severe PH.

Data literacy has been defined as "the ability to read, work with, analyze and argue with data". The United Nations has highlighted a growing risk of inequality for people excluded from the new world of data by lack of education, language, poverty, and discrimination and has called for the development of data literacy at all levels of society. Responses to data are shaped by personal, social and cultural influences, as well as by trust in the source.

Context: People are experts in their own health and need to be involved in health-related decisions, including decisions about what issues should be researched. Underserved communities, such as refugees and migrants, are often excluded from having a voice in relation to their priorities for health research. To avoid tokenistic participation, it is important to develop and test innovative methodologies that are culturally attuned and that can offer 'whole person' (affective, creative and cognitive) engagement.

Understanding changes in extreme compound hazard events is important for climate mitigation and policy. By definition, such events are rare so robust quantification of their future changes is challenging. An approach is presented, for probabilistic modelling and simulation of climate model data, which is invariant to the event definition since it models the underlying weather variables.

Article Synopsis
  • - Liver abscesses in feedlot steers occur when bacteria escape the digestive tract and form infection sites in the liver, but the impact of different feeding programs on the bacteria found in these abscesses was not well understood.
  • - A study compared liver abscess samples from steers managed under traditional and natural feeding programs, revealing that the genus Fusobacterium was predominant in all samples, accounting for 64% of the bacteria identified.
  • - Despite finding some differences in bacterial presence, there were no significant variations in overall microbial diversity across the abscesses from the different management types, reinforcing the connection between gut bacteria and liver abscess development.

This article investigates lived experiences of participation in a training programme entitled 'Singing as a Tool for Community Building in Changing Societies', facilitated by Musicians Without Borders (MWB) and coordinated in partnership with the Health Research Institute PART-IM (Participatory and Arts-Based Methods for Involving Migrants in Health Research) research cluster at the University of Limerick. The aim of this qualitative study is to enhance understanding of participant experience regarding programme delivery, skill acquisition and community building. The research methodology uses an ethnographic framework.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is an incurable condition in humans; driven by pulmonary vascular remodeling partially mediated by epigenetic mechanisms; and leading to right ventricular hypertrophy, failure, and death. We hypothesized that targeting chromatin-modifying histone deacetylases may provide benefit. In this Brief Report we describe case comparison studies using the histone deacetylase inhibitor vorinostat (suberanilohydroxamic acid, 5 mg/kg/day for the first 5 study days) in an established model of severe neonatal bovine PH induced by 14 days of environmental hypoxia.

There is increasing recognition that people's lived experience needs to be incorporated into health decision-making. This has led to rising imperatives for involving the public in health processes, including research. While there have been significant advances in the field, patterns of exclusion still exist in some areas, including migrant participation in health research.

Passive immunity in calves is evaluated or quantified by measuring serum or plasma IgG or serum total protein within the first 7 d of age. While these measurements inform about circulating concentrations of this important protein, they are also a proxy for evaluating all of the additional benefits of colostral ingestion. The current individual calf standard for categorizing dairy calves with successful passive transfer or failure of passive transfer of immunity are based on serum IgG concentrations of ≥10 and <10 g/L, respectively.

The climate varies due to human activity, natural climate cycles, and natural events external to the climate system. Understanding the different roles played by these drivers of variability is fundamental to predicting near-term climate change and changing extremes, and to attributing observed change to anthropogenic or natural factors. Natural drivers such as large explosive volcanic eruptions or multidecadal cycles in ocean circulation occur infrequently and are therefore poorly represented within the observational record.

The obesity epidemic in developed societies has led to increased cardiovascular diseases including pulmonary hypertension associated with left heart disease (PH-LHD), the largest and fastest-growing class of PH. Similar to obese humans, PH and heart failure (HF) are increasingly recognized in North American fattened beef cattle. We hypothesized that PH and HF in fattened beef cattle are novel, phenotypically distinct manifestations of bovine PH arising from left ventricular (LV) dysfunction similar to obesity-related PH-LHD in humans.
