Article Synopsis
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae is a harmful bacteria that can cause serious illnesses like pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis, with a notable serotype, 7F, involved in these diseases.
  • This study focuses on how the O-acetyl group in the polysaccharide of the 7F serotype affects the body's ability to recognize the antigen and produce antibodies for protection.
  • Results show that the O-acetylated polysaccharide produces a stronger immune response compared to its fully de-O-acetylated version, indicating that while the O-acetyl group isn't essential, it enhances the effectiveness of the vaccine's antigenicity and immunogenicity.

Article Synopsis
  • Botulinum toxin type A (incoBoNT/A) is effective in treating anal fissures (AFs) that haven't responded to other treatments, showing a healing rate of 83.9% after 2 years in a study with 49 patients.
  • The treatment involved injecting the toxin into specific areas around the anal sphincter, resulting in significant reductions in anal resting pressure and pain perception over time, although there was a temporary increase in incontinence that resolved.
  • The study suggests incoBoNT/A offers a safe, less invasive alternative to surgery for AF treatment, especially for patients unresponsive to ointment therapy, with only mild and temporary adverse events reported.

Soil phosphorus (P) application is the most common fertilisation technique but may involve constraints due to chemical fixation and microbial immobilisation. Furthermore, excessive P fertilisation leads to P runoff into water bodies, threatening ecosystems, so targeted foliar P fertilisation is an interesting alternative. This study aimed to determine the importance of leaf surface characteristics for foliar P uptake in P-deficient maize (Zea mays L.

Foliar fertilisation is an alternative form of nutrient application, which is of particular interest for phosphorus (P), where the efficiency of soil fertilisation is low. However, the uptake of foliar-applied nutrients is insufficiently characterised. The aim of this study was to investigate the individual and combined significance of wettability, foliar fertiliser properties and surfactant on foliar P uptake in P-deficient maize (Zea mays L.

Cancer with all its more than 200 variants continues to be a major health problem around the world with nearly 10 million deaths recorded in 2020, and leukemia accounted for more than 300,000 cases according to the Global Cancer Observatory. Although new treatment strategies are currently being developed in several ongoing clinical trials, the high complexity of cancer evolution and its survival mechanisms remain as an open problem that needs to be addressed to further enhanced the application of therapies. In this work, we aim to explore cancer growth, particularly chronic lymphocytic leukemia, under the combined application of CAR-T cells and chlorambucil as a nonlinear dynamical system in the form of first-order Ordinary Differential Equations.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionately hard impact on refugees and other migrants who are often exposed to the virus with limited means to protect themselves. We tested the hypothesis that during the COVID-19 pandemic, refugees and other migrants have suffered a negative impact on mental health and have been unjustly discriminated for spreading the disease in Europe (data collection from April to November 2020).

Methods: Participants in the ApartTogether Survey (N = 8297, after listwise deletion of missing items final N = 3940) provided data regarding to their difficulties to adhere to preventive recommendations against COVID-19 infection (CARE), self-perceived stigmatization (SS), and psychological distress (PD).

SARS-CoV-2 infection is mediated by the interaction of the spike glycoprotein trimer its receptor-binding domain (RBD) with the host's cellular receptor. Vaccines seek to block this interaction by eliciting neutralizing antibodies, most of which are directed toward the RBD. Many protein subunit vaccines require powerful adjuvants to generate a potent antibody response.

Novel unimolecular bivalent glycoconjugates were assembled combining several functionalized capsular polysaccharides of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitidis to a carrier protein by using an effective strategy based on the Ugi 4-component reaction. The development of multivalent glycoconjugates opens new opportunities in the field of vaccine design, but their high structural complexity involves new analytical challenges. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance has found wide applications in the characterization and impurity profiling of carbohydrate-based vaccines.

Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated health inequalities worldwide, having a disproportionately harsh impact on unprivileged populations such as migrants and refugees. These populations are often more exposed to the virus, but less protected, while at the same time being at higher risk of suffering from poor living and working conditions, limited access to healthcare, and discrimination by the host society, all of which is challenging to their mental health. Empirical evidence on how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting migrants and refugees is required to design effective actions aimed at ensuring health equity.
