Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, complex and progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Exogenous antioxidants can be beneficial for decreasing oxidative stress, as they are able to reward the lack of efficacy of the endogenous defense systems and raise the overall antioxidant response in a pathological condition. Along our overarching project related with the design and development of potent and safe multi-target mitochondriotropic antioxidants, based on dietary antioxidants, novel derivatives were obtained.

Visual versus automatic ultrasound scoring of lung B-lines: reliability and consistency between systems.

Aims: To evaluate the agreement between a visual and an automatic counting system of lung B-lines by ultrasound (US) as well as to test the inter- and intra-observer reliability of both systems in patients with lung diseases.

Material And Methods: We included four patients with different lung conditions. Four ultrasonographers expert in lung US blindly, independently and consecutively performed, in two rounds, a US B-mode assessment of 8 lung intercostal spaces of each patient.

Biological or mechanical prostheses for isolated aortic valve replacement in patients aged 50-65 years: the ANDALVALVE study.

Objectives: The decision about whether to use a biological or a mechanical prosthesis for aortic valve replacement remains controversial in patients between 50 and 65 years of age and has yet to be addressed in a Mediterranean population. This research aimed to analyse long-term survival and major morbidity rates (30-day mortality, stroke, any prosthetic reoperation and major bleeding) within this population.

Methods: Our multicentre observational retrospective study included all subjects aged 50-65 years who had a primary isolated aortic valve replacement due to severe aortic stenosis at 7 public hospitals from Andalusia (Spain) between 2000 and 2015.

To assess the discriminative utility of nail features detected by B-mode (BM) and color Doppler (CD) ultrasound (US) between patients with psoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and healthy controls. Sixty patients with PsA, 21 patients with PsO, and 20 healthy controls were prospectively included. All patients underwent a dermatologic assessment and PsA patients also a rheumatologic assessment.

Exposure Assessment For Air-To-Skin Uptake of Semivolatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs) Indoors.

Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are ubiquitous in the indoor environment and a priority for exposure assessment because of the environmental health concerns that they pose. Direct air-to-skin dermal uptake has been shown to be comparable to the inhalation intake for compounds with certain chemical properties. In this study, we aim to further understand the transport of these types of chemicals through the skin, specifically through the stratum corneum (SC).

Volatile compounds other than CO emitted by different microorganisms promote distinct posttranscriptionally regulated responses in plants.

A "box-in-box" cocultivation system was used to investigate plant responses to microbial volatile compounds (VCs) and to evaluate the contributions of organic and inorganic VCs (VOCs and VICs, respectively) to these responses. Arabidopsis plants were exposed to VCs emitted by adjacent Alternaria alternata and Penicillium aurantiogriseum cultures, with and without charcoal filtration. No VOCs were detected in the headspace of growth chambers containing fungal cultures with charcoal filters.

Andes hantavirus (ANDV) is an etiologic agent of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), a severe disease characterized by fever, headache, and gastrointestinal symptoms that may progress to hypotension, pulmonary failure, and cardiac shock that results in a 25 to 40% case-fatality rate. Currently, there is no specific treatment or vaccine; however, several studies have shown that the generation of neutralizing antibody (Ab) responses strongly correlates with survival from HCPS in humans. In this study, we screened 27 ANDV convalescent HCPS patient sera for their capacity to bind and neutralize ANDV in vitro.

Modeled deposition of nitrogen and sulfur in Europe estimated by 14 air quality model systems: evaluation, effects of changes in emissions and implications for habitat protection.

The evaluation and intercomparison of air quality models is key to reducing model errors and uncertainty. The projects AQMEII3 and EURODELTA-Trends, in the framework of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollutants and the Task Force on Measurements and Modelling, respectively (both task forces under the UNECE Convention on the Long Range Transport of Air Pollution, LTRAP), have brought together various regional air quality models to analyze their performance in terms of air concentrations and wet deposition, as well as to address other specific objectives. This paper jointly examines the results from both project communities by intercomparing and evaluating the deposition estimates of reduced and oxidized nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) in Europe simulated by 14 air quality model systems for the year 2010.

Left superior vena cava draining into the left atrium in the absence of coronary sinus is an anomaly that can appear in heterotaxy syndrome and unroofed coronary sinus syndrome. Regardless of the origin of these syndromes, biventricular repair can be done through rerouting by intracardiac procedures or through disconnection-reconnection of the left superior vena cava to the right atrium or right superior vena cava by extracardiac procedures. Different techniques can be used for this purpose, each of which has its own advantages and limitations.

Understanding the bias dependence of low frequency noise in single layer graphene FETs.

This letter investigates the bias-dependent low frequency noise of single layer graphene field-effect transistors. Noise measurements have been conducted with electrolyte-gated graphene transistors covering a wide range of gate and drain bias conditions for different channel lengths. A new analytical model that accounts for the propagation of the local noise sources in the channel to the terminal currents and voltages is proposed in this paper to investigate the noise bias dependence.

An innovative wastewater treatment technology based on UASB and IFAS for cost-efficient macro and micropollutant removal.

An innovative process based on the combination of a UASB reactor and an IFAS system is proposed in order to combine different redox conditions and biomass conformations to promote a high microbial diversity. The objective of this configuration is to enhance the biological removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) as well as to achieve the abatement of nitrogen by using the dissolved methane as an inexpensive electron donor. Results showed high removals of COD (93%) and dissolved methane present in the UASB effluent (up to 85%) was biodegraded by a consortium of aerobic methanotrophs and heterotrophic denitrifiers.

A novel species of the marine cyanobacterium Acaryochloris with a unique pigment content and lifestyle.

All characterized members of the ubiquitous genus Acaryochloris share the unique property of containing large amounts of chlorophyll (Chl) d, a pigment exhibiting a red absorption maximum strongly shifted towards infrared compared to Chl a. Chl d is the major pigment in these organisms and is notably bound to antenna proteins structurally similar to those of Prochloron, Prochlorothrix and Prochlorococcus, the only three cyanobacteria known so far to contain mono- or divinyl-Chl a and b as major pigments and to lack phycobilisomes. Here, we describe RCC1774, a strain isolated from the foreshore near Roscoff (France).
