Jumper's knee, or patellar tendinopathy, affects nearly one half of elite volleyball athletes and causes significant morbidity. The diagnosis and treatment of jumper's knee is evolving with heavier reliance on the use of diagnostic ultrasound with and without color or power Doppler. Research suggests that conservative treatment is very effective using an eccentric exercise regimen and decline squats.

Lumbar epidural steroid injections are used to manage low back and leg pain (ie, sciatica). Utilization of the procedure is increasing, with Medicare spending for lumbar epidural procedures topping $175 million annually. Few prospective randomized controlled trials have clearly demonstrated the efficacy of epidural steroid injections; many have shown conflicting results.

Acute spinal cord injury (SCI) is a thrombophilic state resulting from altered fibrinolytic and platelet function and abnormal concentrations of clotting factors. Patients with SCI are frequently burdened with the classic risk factors of Virchow's triad including stasis, hypercoagulability, and intimal trauma.
