It is ge nerally accepted that glioblastoma (GBM) arise from cancer stem cells (CSC); however, there is little evidence on their anatomical distribution. We investigated the expression and distribution of SOX-2-positive and CD133-positive CSCs both in the enhancing nodule (EN) of GBM and in the FLAIR hyperintensity zones on a surgical, histopathological series of 33 GBMs. The inclusion criterion was the intraoperative sampling of different tumor regions individualized, thanks to neuronavigation and positivity to intraoperative fluorescence with the use of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA).

We report a case of brucellosis-induced severe neutropenia in a 2-year-old girl who presented with a 2-week history of fever. On clinical examination, the patient was febrile with mild aphthous stomatitis. However, her general condition was stable, and systemic examination did not show involvement of any other organ.

Ping-pong fractures have become less frequent, and no definite predictors to determine which fractures will elevate spontaneously and which should undergo surgical treatment have been clearly defined. Herein, the authors present a revision of the literature, in which 54 papers were included, with a total of 228 children studied. Patients who underwent surgery accounted for 30%; elevation through obstetrical vacuum or other aspiration systems was applied in 30%; and spontaneous resolution occurred in 40%; in 4 patients, percutaneous microscrew elevation was applied.

Hyperphosphoremia is common in patients with chronic kidney disease and is an important risk factor in this patient population. Phosphate binding drugs are a key therapeutic strategy to reduce phosphoremia levels, although they have significant side effects especially in the gastrointestinal tract, such as gastritis, diarrhoea and constipation. We report the case of a haemodialysis-dependent patient suffering from chronic kidney disease stage V KDIGO secondary to polycystic autosomal dominant disease; treated with phosphate binders, the case was complicated by the appearance of diverticulosis, evolved into acute diverticulitis.

Objective: No consensus exists on the best treatment for recurrent high-grade glioma (HGG), particularly in terms of surgical indications, and scant data are available on the integrated use of multiple technologies to overcome intraoperative limits and pitfalls related to artifacts secondary to previous surgery and radiotherapy. Membranous nephropathy represents the most frequent cause of nephrotic syndrome in the adult, leading to end-stage renal disease in one third of all the patients. In the last years, the discovery of circulating autoantibodies against phospholipase A2 receptor 1 (PLA2R) and thrombospondin type-1 containing 7A domain (THSD7A), shed light on the pathogenesis of idiopathic forms, being responsible for 70% and 3% of all the cases, respectively. These identifications allowed the development of serological and histologic tests to detect autoantibodies and relative targets for diagnostic and prognostic purposes.

Purpose: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is the most frequent cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults and the disease course is characterized by the "rule of third", with one-third of patients experiencing complete remission and the remaining experiencing relapses or progression of the disease. YKL-40 (also called chitinase 3-like-1 or human cartilage glycoprotein 39) is a chitinase-like protein belonging to the family 18 of glycosyl hydrolase (GH18). This protein is involved in the inflammatory process acting as pro-inflammatory cytokine secreted by neutrophils, activated human macrophages, vascular smooth muscle cells and cancer cells. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of IgA nephropathy (IgAN), the most common form of glomerulonephritis, with discovery and follow-up in 20,612 individuals of European and East Asian ancestry. We identified six new genome-wide significant associations, four in ITGAM-ITGAX, VAV3 and CARD9 and two new independent signals at HLA-DQB1 and DEFA. We replicated the nine previously reported signals, including known SNPs in the HLA-DQB1 and DEFA loci.

In order to optimize the use of ultrasound in the characterization of cystic or nodular lesions, the incidence of simple cysts in the general population, their growth and evolution is discussed considering some follow-up studies. After studying the typical sonographic criteria of simple cyst, we describe the sonographic features of cancer and the incidence of various types of tumors. In such cases radiological evaluations are required and the Bosniak classification is useful in the clinical choice of waiting, more detailed diagnosis or excision of the lesion.
