Background: Concussions in Rugby Union are common with an increased risk to adolescent players. Coaches are key to injury prevention and a greater understanding of their knowledge and sentiments may guide future initiatives. There is a lack of data on rugby coaches, especially in South Africa.

Risk factors associated with football injury among male players from a specific academy in Ghana: a pilot study.

There seems to be no information on the incidence of injury and associated risk factors for academy football players in Ghana. We determine the risk factors associated with match and training injuries among male football players at an academy in Ghana. Preseason measurements of players' height, weight, and ankle dorsiflexion (DF) range of motion (ROM) were measured with a stadiometer (Seca 213), a digital weighing scale (Omron HN-289), and tape measure, respectively.

The epidemiology of injury and illness amongst athletes at the Indian Ocean Island Games, Mauritius, 2019.

Background: The Indian Ocean Island Games is a multi-sport event that occurs every four years and includes athletes from seven islands of the Indian Ocean, namely, Comoros, Reunion, Mayotte, Madagascar, Maldives, Seychelles, and Mauritius.

Objectives: This study aims to describe the injury and illness epidemiology of the athletes participating during the 2019 Indian Ocean Islands Games.

Methods: This prospective cohort study recorded injury and illness cases from athletes who competed in these Games.

Physical Conditioning Strategies for the Prevention of Concussion in Sport: a Scoping Review.

Background: Concussion in sports has received a great deal of media attention and may result in short and longer-lasting symptoms, especially in adolescents. Although significant strides have been made in the identification and management of concussion, less is known about the primary prevention of this condition. The aims of this scoping review are to (1) summarize the current research of physical conditioning strategies to reduce or prevent concussion incidence in individuals participating in sport, especially adolescents, and (2) to identify gaps in the knowledge base.

Nurse Case Manager: Measurement of Care Coordination Activities and Quality and Resource Use Outcomes When Caring for the Complex Patient With Hematologic Cancer.

Background: The lack of coordination of care for complex patients in the hematology setting has prompted nurse case managers (NCMs) to coordinate that care.

Objectives: This article aimed to identify the frequency of NCM care coordination activities and quality and resource use outcomes in the complex care of patients in the hematology setting.

Methods: NCM aggregate data from complex outpatients with hematologic cancer were retrieved from electronic health records at a comprehensive cancer center in the midwestern United States.

Purpose: Mevalonate pathway inhibitors are potentially useful chemotherapeutic agents showing growth inhibition and pro-apoptotic effects in cancer cells. The effects of statins and bisphosphonates on cancer growth are attributed to a reduction in protein isoprenylation. Post-translational modification and activation of GTPase binding Ras superfamily permit the recruitment of these signal proteins to membranes where they mediate the cancer phenotype.

Primary laryngeal lymphoma occurs very rarely, accounting for far less than 1% of primary malignant laryngeal neoplasms. To the best of our knowledge, primary laryngeal composite lymphoma has not been reported in the literature. Herein, we report the first case of primary laryngeal composite lymphoma composed of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL, NOS), in a 43-year-old man.

Statins cause profound effects on gene expression in human cancer cells in vitro: the role of membrane microdomains.

There is increasing evidence that statin treatment can be beneficial in certain cancer patients. To determine if these benefits are a direct result of the cholesterol-lowering effects of statins or a result of secondary, protein transcription effects, the impacts of pravastatin and a cholesterol sequestrating agent methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MbetaCD) on mRNA expression in the breast cancer cell MDA-MB-231 and the lung carcinoma cell Calu-1 have been compared by microarray techniques. The effects of these agents on cholesterol-rich rafts and caveolae, which have significance in cancer signaling, have also been examined.

Thy-1 associated pp85--90 is a potential docking site for SH2 domain-containing signal transduction molecules.

Thy-1, a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored glycoprotein expressed at high levels on thymocytes, has been implicated in positive and negative signal transduction. We show that Thy-1 associates with a protein of 85--90 kDa, which is prominently phosphorylated in vitro as well as in vivo following the stimulation of thymocytes with pervanadate. pp85--90 is not identical to known proteins that are phosphorylated following T cell activation.

CD5 is a glycoprotein expressed on thymocytes, T cells, and a subset of B cells. Antibody-mediated cross-linking studies or studies on CD5 knockout mice implicate CD5 as a co-stimulatory or negative regulatory molecule. CD5 is rapidly phosphorylated on tyrosine (Y) residues following Tcell activation.

The mode of anchorage to the cell surface determines both the function and the membrane location of Thy-1 glycoprotein.

The surface glycoprotein, Thy-1, when expressed by transfection in NG115/401L neural cells, inhibits their neurite outgrowth over astrocytes. We have investigated the role of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor of Thy-1 in this inhibition. Hybrid molecules, in which the lipid anchor was replaced by polypeptide transmembrane domains, were expressed by transfection.

Characterisation of phosphoprotein complexes associated with rat thymocyte Thy-1.

We have previously demonstrated the non-covalent association of the protein tyrosine kinases p56lck and p60fyn together with a number of substrates for phosphorylation with rat thymocyte Thy-1. Here we present evidence that one of these associated phosphoproteins, p85, is associated by disulphide bridging with another polypeptide, demonstrating that it is an integral membrane protein with an extracellular domain. We also show that phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase activity may be coprecipitated with Thy-1 in Brij 96 thymocyte lysates.

Homotypic adhesion of rat B cells, but not T cells, in response to cross-linking of CD48.

Rat lymphocytes were found to aggregate in response to monoclonal antibodies to the glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored surface antigen CD48. This clustering required bivalent antibodies but was not Fc mediated. It was blocked by inhibitors of cellular metabolism and cytoskeletal function but not by antibodies to leucocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) or intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1).

The association of the protein tyrosine kinases p56lck and p60fyn with the glycosyl phosphatidylinositol-anchored proteins Thy-1 and CD48 in rat thymocytes is dependent on the state of cellular activation.

Cell surface glycoproteins anchored to the plasma membrane via glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) structures, and hence having no cytoplasmic domains, can nevertheless transmit activation signals in lymphocytes. By immunoprecipitation from detergent lysates and in vitro immune complex kinase reactions the GPI-anchored molecules Thy-1 and CD48 are shown to be associated with multimolecular complexes of phosphoproteins including the protein tyrosine kinases p56lck and p60fyn in both rat and mouse thymocytes. Moreover, the kinase activity associated with Thy-1 on rat thymocytes is shown to be dependent on the activation state of the cells, with stimulation by the lectin, concanavalin A, producing a marked decrease in Thy-1-associated kinase activity.

Substance abuse among subjects screened out from an alcoholism research program.

Three hundred and eight subjects were screened over the phone for admission to an inpatient alcohol treatment research unit. Using a structured interview, the prospective patients were asked questions regarding demographics, drinking history, previous treatments, physical health, family history, and a detailed history of past and present substance use. Drug use was studied as regular use versus no use or brief experimental use of five drug categories: cannabinoids, stimulants, sedatives, opiates, and hallucinogens.

The hinge region of the CD8 alpha chain: structure, antigenicity, and utility in expression of immunoglobulin superfamily domains.

The lymphocyte surface CD8 antigen is a heterodimer with each chain containing a single Ig-related domain, a hinge-like sequence, a transmembrane segment, and a short cytoplasmic sequence. A soluble form of the rat CD8 alpha chain was produced by introducing a stop codon into the cDNA at the end of the region encoding the extracellular sequence and expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells. sCD8 alpha was produced at 20 mg/l, and consisted of monomers, dimers, and higher aggregates.

Frequency analysis of the sleep EEG in depression.

Eight patients with major depressive disorder (seven bipolar and one unipolar) and matched controls had sleep studies, on which frequency analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) was performed. Total sleep and sleep efficiency were decreased in the patients, but there was no significant difference in rapid eye movement (REM) latency between the two groups. A psychophysiological study of insomnia.

Ten insomniacs with age- and sex-matched controls had studies of baseline sleep, relation of polygraphically defined sleep to retrospective reports, and arousal thresholds to electronic tones or to a recording of a voice calling out the subject's name. The two groups differed in 10 out of 13 questions about habitual sleep and daytime feelings. In contrast, polygraphic measures of baseline sleep indicated only that insomniacs tended to have slightly less total sleep and had a small but significant increase in early morning awakening time.

Effect of transfusion on immune function in a traumatized animal model.

Blood transfusions repeatedly have been shown to prolong allograft survival, probably by stimulating suppressor T lymphocytes. The effects of transfusions on immune function in traumatized patients has not previously been investigated. We investigated the effects of transfusions on the immune system using a burned rat model.
