Aims: Life expectancy is typically reduced by 2-4 years in people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-35 kg/m and by 8-10 years in people with a BMI of 40-50 kg/m. Obesity is also associated with onset, or exacerbation of, multiple chronic diseases. Mechanistically, this, in part, involves formation of advanced glycation and lipidation end-products that directly bond with proteins, lipids, or DNA, thereby perturbing typical cellular function.

Dysregulation of translation is a hallmark of cancer that enables rapid changes in cellular protein production to shape oncogenic phenotypes. Translation initiation is governed by the mGpppX cap-binding protein eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), the rate-limiting factor of cap-dependent translation initiation. eIF4E is overexpressed in many cancers and drives the production of oncoproteins that promote tumor growth and survival.

HSPB4 and HSPB5 (α-crystallins) have shown increasing promise as neuroprotective agents, demonstrating several anti-apoptotic and protective roles in disorders such as multiple sclerosis and diabetic retinopathy. HSPs are highly regulated by post-translational modification, including deamidation, glycosylation, and phosphorylation. Among them, T148 phosphorylation has been shown to regulate the structural and functional characteristics of HSPB4 and underlie, in part, its neuroprotective capacity.

The need to optimize size, weight, and power of high-power microwave (HPM) systems has motivated the development of solid-state HPM sources, such as nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs), which utilize gyromagnetic precession or dispersion to generate RF. One recent development implemented the NLTL as a pulse forming line (PFL) to form a nonlinear pulse forming line (NPFL) system that substantially reduced the system's size by eliminating the need for a separate PFL; however, matching standard loads can be challenging. This paper describes the development of a tapered NPFL using an exponentially tapered composite based ferrite core containing 60% nickel zinc ferrite (by volume) encased in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and encapsulated in a 5% barium strontium titanate shell.

This study examined the association between self-identification as a sex worker (SW) and perceived access to pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic HIV prevention methods among MSM in France, Russia, and Türkiye amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Globally, 17,250 MSM recruited through a geosocial networking smartphone application completed the COVID-19 disparities survey, which was administered between October and November 2020. Approximately 38% of survey respondents were identified as living in France (n = 1269), Russia (n = 3882), and Türkiye (n = 3141) at the time of survey completion.

The utilization of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) has increased worldwide and has become a favourable alternative to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with isolated single-compartment knee osteoarthritis. With the increase in UKA utilization, there has been an increase in the number of revisions. The two most common causes of revision are the progression of osteoarthritis in other compartments and aseptic loosening with polyethylene wear, with other common causes for revision including periprosthetic fracture, bearing dislocation, infection, instability and unexplained pain.

Electroporation occurs when cells are exposed to an electric pulse of sufficient intensity and pulse duration . Many studies have attempted to develop universal scaling laws to predict membrane pore dynamics for pulsed electric fields (PEFs) of different durations; however, the differences in pore dynamics across these parameters makes this difficult both experimentally and numerically. This study uses the asymptotic Smoluchowski equation (ASME) to quantify the number of pores, average pore radius, and fractional pore area (FPA) during exposure to PEFs with durations from hundreds of picoseconds to a millisecond.

Tissue fibrosis remains unamenable to meaningful therapeutic interventions and is the primary cause of chronic graft failure after organ transplantation. Eukaryotic translation initiation factor (eIF4E), a key translational regulator, serves as convergent target of multiple upstream profibrotic signaling pathways that contribute to mesenchymal cell (MC) activation. Here, we investigate the role of MAP kinase-interacting serine/threonine kinase-induced (MNK-induced) direct phosphorylation of eIF4E at serine 209 (Ser209) in maintaining fibrotic transformation of MCs and determine the contribution of the MNK/eIF4E pathway to the pathogenesis of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD).

Objective: To survey the current structure, capability and operational scope of pre-hospital and retrieval aeromedical teams across Australia.

Methods: The medical directors of all Australian civilian adult aeromedical retrieval organisations with pre-hospital teams and/or doctors for inter-hospital critical care patient transport were contacted in a survey to qualitatively assess capacity and team structure.
