Strong light-matter interaction is emerging as an exciting tool for controlling chemical reactions. Here, we demonstrate an L-proline-catalyzed direct asymmetric Aldol reaction under vibrational strong coupling. Both the reactants (4-nitrobenzaldehyde and acetone) carbonyl bands are coupled to an infrared photon and react in the presence of L-proline.

Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common but frequently neglected problem in females, significantly impacting their psychosocial health. The available estimates are an underestimation of a bigger problem. Thus, the study aimed to estimate the prevalence of UI, its associated risk factors, its impact on the Quality of life (QoL), and barriers to treatment-seeking behaviour in women attending tertiary healthcare centres.

Background: The bacterial pathogen, Flavobacterium columnare causes columnaris disease in Labeo rohita globally. Major effects of this bacterial infection include skin rashes and gill necrosis. Nimbolide, the key ingredient of the leaf extract of Azadirachta indica possesses anti-bacterial properties effective against many microorganisms.

Background: Presence of autoantibodies against α-synuclein (α-syn AAb) in serum of the general population has been widely reported. That such peripheral factors may be involved in central nervous system pathophysiology was demonstrated by detection of immunoglobulins (IgGs) in cerebrospinal fluid and brain of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Thus, blood-borne IgGs may reach the brain parenchyma through an impaired blood-brain barrier (BBB).

Anal fistulas, especially complex and high fistulas, are difficult to manage. The transanal opening of the intersphincteric space (TROPIS) procedure was first described in 2017, and a high success rate of over 90% was reported in high complex fistulas. Since then, more studies and even a meta-analysis have corroborated the high efficacy of this procedure in high fistulas.

Backgound: Infections of the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) driveline are a dreaded complication that results in high mortality and morbidity.

Method: We retrospectively reviewed five consecutive patients with severe continuous-flow LVAD (HVAD, Heartmate 2, and Heartmate 3) driveline infection. These infections, which developed on an average of 960.

Purpose: Undergraduate medical education has had a call to action to acknowledge racist practices that are impacting learners throughout their training. In 2020, our school performed a detailed curricular review and provided recommendations to address racism in the curriculum. Many schools have now undergone a similar curricular review process, but little is known about whether suggested antiracist curricular changes impact faculty teaching behavior or the overall curriculum.

Background: The pulsed-electron avalanche knife (PEAK) PlasmaBlade provides an atraumatic, scalpel-like cutting precision and electrocautery-like hemostasis. PlasmaBlade operates near body temperature, and its long, thin, and malleable tip can overcome the limitations of a surgical knife. In this study, we aimed to evaluate our clinical experience and histopathological outcomes of septal myectomy using PlasmaBlade.

Background: Four-dimensional-flow cardiac MR (4DF-MR) offers advantages in primary mitral regurgitation. The relationship between 4DF-MR-derived mitral regurgitant volume (MR-Rvol) and the post-operative left ventricular (LV) reverse remodeling has not yet been established.

Purpose: To ascertain if the 4DF-MR-derived MR-Rvol correlates with the LV reverse remodeling in primary mitral regurgitation.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to investigate the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 variants and the severity of COVID-19 across India, using a nationwide platform for molecular epidemiology analysis.
  • - Conducted from September 2021 to December 2022, the cohort included nearly 5,000 participants, with successful sequencing of 2,723 samples, revealing key insights about different virus variants and their impacts on health outcomes.
  • - Findings demonstrated that the Delta variant significantly raised the risk of severe disease, while Omicron presented a milder illness, with age, comorbidities, and lack of vaccination identified as major risk factors for mortality.

Most genetic association studies focus on binary variants. To identify the effects of multi-allelic variation of tandem repeats (TRs) on human traits, we performed direct TR genotyping and phenome-wide association studies in 168,554 individuals from the UK Biobank, identifying 47 TRs showing causal associations with 73 traits. We replicated 23 of 31 (74%) of these causal associations in the All of Us cohort.

  • This text talks about how scientists are using artificial intelligence (AI) to help identify different parts of the heart in medical images, especially using CT scans.
  • The researchers looked at 18 studies from 2020 onwards to see how well these AI methods worked in segmenting heart structures and found that the AI performed pretty well overall.
  • However, they noticed that many of the studies didn't check their AI tools on other data and weren't very clear about their methods, which could be improved.

Permanent stains such as trichrome have better sensitivity but are time-consuming and the fixative includes toxic mercuric chloride. Thus, a newer modification was tested and found to be a superior, faster and safer staining technique for intestinal parasitic detection. Our study lasted 9 months and a single stool sample was collected from each enrolled patient.

Aspartate β-semialdehyde dehydrogenase (ASADH) is a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of essential amino acids in microorganisms and some plants. Inhibition of ASADHs can be a potential drug target for developing novel antimicrobial and herbicidal compounds. This review covers up-to-date information about sequence diversity, ligand/inhibitor-bound 3D structures, potential inhibitors, and key pharmacophoric features of ASADH useful in designing novel and target-specific inhibitors of ASADH.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating gastrointestinal emergency in preterm infants and the clinical presentation of NEC may vary with gestational age. We lack reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis of NEC limiting timely intervention. Hematological changes in NEC are actively researched for their potential role as biomarkers.

Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) is emerging as a promising, environment-friendly solution for fulfilling freshwater and energy demands. However, a critical challenge for ISSG lies in the presence of harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the feedwater which are co-evaporated with water, leading to more enriched concentration in condensed water. Herein, lanthanum cobaltate-graphitic carbon nitride (LaCoO/g-CN, LCO/g-CN) nanocomposite decorated beauty sponge (LCO/g-CN@BS) is proposed as an efficient photothermal/photocatalytic material for solar-driven seawater desalination and simultaneous VOC degradation.
