Objective: To determine the proportion of elderly people without dementia who would want disclosure of a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), for themselves or for their spouses, and to verify whether the availability of medication would influence their decision.

Design: A cross-sectional survey with a semistructured questionnaire completed during face-to-face interviews.

Setting: Medical and surgical outpatient clinics in St Mary's Hospital Center.

Background: The study was designed in order to evaluate the degree of correlation of mitotic index (MI), Ki67 (MIB1) score and S-phase fraction (SPF) as markers of cell proliferation and prognosis in breast cancer.

Materials And Methods: The series analysed corresponded to 257 consecutive invasive breast carcinoma, treated at the Institut Curie, France, in 1995. Nottingham histological grade and MIB1 semiquantitative and quantitative score were assessed on histological sections, whereas SPF was calculated using flow cytometry analysis of fine-needle aspiration products.

Immune responses to Bacillus anthracis protective antigen in patients with bioterrorism-related cutaneous or inhalation anthrax.

Anti-protective antigen (PA) immunoglobulin (Ig) G, toxin neutralization, and PA-specific IgG memory B cell responses were studied in patients with bioterrorism-related cutaneous or inhalation anthrax and in a patient with laboratory-acquired cutaneous anthrax. Responses were determined for >1 year after the onset of symptoms. Eleven days after the onset of symptoms (15 days after likely exposure), anti-PA IgG was detected in 16 of 17 patients with confirmed or suspected clinical anthrax who were tested.

Doubts are expressed on the validity of patient satisfaction questionnaires. High satisfaction levels are consistently reported. Within the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) quality of life group, we developed a cancer inpatient satisfaction questionnaire (QLQ-SAT32), adopting several precautions to overcome the ceiling effect commonly reported in satisfaction ratings.

Comparison between olanzapine and haloperidol on procedural learning and the relationship with striatal D2 receptor occupancy in schizophrenia.

The striatum is known to play a primary role in procedural learning. In this study, the authors simultaneously assessed the effects of two antipsychotic drugs on procedural learning and on striatal dopamine (D2) receptor occupancy. Twenty-seven patients receiving either olanzapine or haloperidol as antipsychotic medication were assessed with the Computed Visual Tracking Task (CVTT) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) following the administration of Iodine 123-IBZM (123I-IBZM), a radioligand with a high affinity and specificity for the D2 receptors.

A bipolar DNA helicase gene, herA, clusters with rad50, mre11 and nurA genes in thermophilic archaea.

We showed previously that rad50 and mre11 genes of thermophilic archaea are organized in an operon-like structure with a third gene (nurA) encoding a 5' to 3' exonuclease. Here, we show that the rad50, mre11 and nurA genes from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius are co-transcribed with a fourth gene encoding a DNA helicase. This enzyme (HerA) is the prototype of a new class of DNA helicases able to utilize either 3' or 5' single-stranded DNA extensions for loading and subsequent DNA duplex unwinding.

Specificity of the antibody response to the pneumococcal polysaccharide and conjugate vaccines in human immunodeficiency virus-infected adults.

Nonspecific antibodies, which are thought to be nonprotective, have been shown to contribute a substantial proportion of the measured concentration in the standardized immunoglobulin G (IgG) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for pneumococcal polysaccharide capsular antibodies. The presence of such antibodies in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons has not been evaluated. Impact of a unilateral brain lesion on cortisol secretion and emotional state: anterior/posterior dissociation in humans.

The main goal of this study was to evaluate whether a unilateral brain lesion in a human population is associated with a modification of the circadian cortisol secretion profile, and/or patient's emotional state. The second goal of this study was to assess whether there would be differences in both the pattern of cortisol secretion and emotional state in brain-damaged patients as a function of side of lesion, and localization (anterior vs posterior) of lesion. Eight patients with a left cortical lesion, six patients with a right cortical lesion, four patients with basal ganglia lesions (2 left and 2 right) and ten healthy volunteers were evaluated daily on measures of salivary cortisol levels and subjective feelings of joy and sadness at 0700, 1200, 1600 and 1900 hours over a 15-day period.

[A study of artemether combined with primaquine in the treatment of falciparum malaria].

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and side effects of artemether combined with primaquine in the treatment of falciparum malaria.

Methods: Randomization and comparison methods were used in 121 falciparum malaria cases in the Republic of Central Africa. Sixty-one cases were treated with artemether combined with primaquine (Group A used artemether orally, Group B used artemether intramuscularly).

Antibody responses in postsplenectomy trauma patients receiving the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine at 14 versus 28 days postoperatively.

Background: We have previously demonstrated, using functional antibody assays, that patients undergoing splenectomy for trauma exhibit a better response to pneumococcal immunization when vaccinated at 14 days postoperatively versus 1 or 7 days. However, patients immunized at 14 days failed to reach the response of normal controls. This study was conducted to determine whether even later immunization would improve the antibody response.

Strategies of collaboration between general practitioners and psychiatrists: a survey of practitioners' opinions and characteristics.

Background: The description of collaboration models and the key underlying principles provide important information for designing services. However, to apply this broad corpus of information to clinical services and policymaking, we need to know which key principles (or strategies) of collaboration are the most accepted by local physicians.

Method: In this context, we designed a survey that included 2 objectives: 1) to collect the opinions of practising general practitioners (GPs) and psychiatrists in Montreal with respect to strategies for improving collaboration between these 2 groups and 2) to identify demographic and practice characteristics of those physicians associated with the acceptance of such strategies.

Clinicopathologic features of suspected brevetoxicosis in double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) along the Florida Gulf Coast.

Outbreaks of morbidity and mortality in double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) along Florida's Gulf Coast have occurred sporadically for at least 30 yr. During these outbreaks, the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, located on Sanibel Island in Florida, has admitted a substantial number of cormorants with consistent presentation of primarily neurologic clinical signs. In order to investigate the association of these outbreaks in cormorants with exposure to brevetoxin, we compared the timing of admittance of cormorants with outbreak-specific clinical signs to blooms of the brevetoxin-producing marine algae, Karenia brevis (formerly Gymnodinium breve), around Sanibel Island from 1995 through 1999.

We determined the HIV viral load in 66 adults randomly assigned to receive pneumococcal immunization with one or two doses of protein conjugate vaccine, one dose of polysaccharide vaccine, one dose of each, or placebo. NurA, a novel 5'-3' nuclease gene linked to rad50 and mre11 homologs of thermophilic Archaea.

We isolated and characterized a new nuclease (NurA) exhibiting both single-stranded endonuclease activity and 5'-3' exonuclease activity on single-stranded and double-stranded DNA from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Nuclease homologs are detected in all thermophilic archaea and, in most species, the nurA gene is organized in an operon-like structure with rad50 and mre11 archaeal homologs. This nuclease might thus act in concert with Rad50 and Mre11 proteins in archaeal recombination/repair.

Assignment of additional anticapsular antibody concentrations to the Neisseria meningitidis group A, C, Y, and W-135 meningococcal standard reference serum CDC1992.

We assigned additional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay antibody concentrations (immunoglobulin G [IgG], IgM, and IgA, and total) to the Neisseria meningitidis standard reference serum CDC1992 for groups Y and W-135 to 12 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention quality control sera. These assignments will supplement previous assignments and will aid in the evaluation of present and developing vaccines.

Effect of antidepressants on ATP-dependent calcium uptake by neuronal endoplasmic reticulum.

This study investigated the effect of tricyclic and atypical antidepressants on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) dependent calcium uptake by the endoplasmic reticulum of lysed synaptosomes from rat brain cortex. Tricyclic antidepressants (imipramine, desipramine, clomipramine, amitriptyline) exhibited no effect in the lower range (0.06 to 2 microM) of drug concentrations, and a concentration-dependent inhibition of calcium uptake in the upper range (6 to 200 microM).
