This study presents the influence of various substituents on the photophysical features of heteroleptic copper(I) complexes bearing both N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and dipyridylamine (dpa = dipyridylamine skeleton corresponding to ligand L1) ligands. The luminescent properties have been compared to our recently reported archetypal blue emitting [Cu(IPr)(dpa)][PF6] complex. The choice of the substituents on both ligands has been guided to explore the effect of the electron donor/acceptor and "push-pull" on the emission wavelengths and photoluminescence quantum yields.

Following recent work on heterometallic titanocene-gold complexes as potential chemotherapeutics for renal cancer, we report here on the synthesis, characterization and stability studies of new titanocene complexes containing a methyl group and a carboxylate ligand (mba = S-CH-COO) bound to gold(I)-phosphane fragments through a thiolate group ([(-CH)TiMe(-mba)Au(PR)]. The compounds are more stable in physiological media than those previously reported and are highly cytotoxic against human cancer renal cell lines. We describe here preliminary mechanistic data involving studies on the interaction of selected compounds with plasmid (pBR322) DNA used as a model nucleic acid, and with selected protein kinases from a panel of 35 protein kinases having oncological interest.

We report on the synthesis, characterization, and stability studies of new titanocene complexes containing a methyl group and a carboxylate ligand (mba = -OC(O)--CH-S-) bound to gold(I)-N-heterocyclic carbene fragments through the thiolate group: [(η-CH)TiMe(μ-mba)Au(NHC)]. The cytotoxicities of the heterometallic compounds along with those of novel monometallic gold-N-heterocyclic carbene precursors [(NHC)Au(mbaH)] have been evaluated against renal, prostate, colon, and breast cancer cell lines. The highest activity and selectivity and a synergistic effect of the resulting heterometallic species was found for the prostate and colon cancer cell lines.

Although the use of probiotics based on Bacillus strains to fight off intestinal pathogens and antibiotic-associated diarrhea is widespread, the mechanisms involved in producing their beneficial effects remain unclear. Here, we studied the ability of compounds secreted by the probiotic Bacillus clausii strain O/C to counteract the cytotoxic effects induced by toxins of two pathogens, Clostridium difficile and Bacillus cereus, by evaluating eukaryotic cell viability and expression of selected genes. Coincubation of C.

A series of new organometallic carbosilane dendrimers (first and second generation) and the corresponding non-dendritic mononuclear based on ruthenium arene fragments are described. The metallodendrimers were prepared by reactions of the precursor [Ru(η(6)-p-cymene)Cl2]2 with carbosilane dendrimers functionalized with N-donor monodentate ligands such as NH2- and pyridine, or with N,O-, N,N-chelating imine ligands. While the dendrimer precursors are insoluble in DMSO or water, novel metallodendrimers are soluble in DMSO and some of them are even highly soluble in water.

Research using low-density polyethylene (LDPE) passive samplers has steadily increased over the past two decades. However, such research efforts remain hampered because of strict guidelines, requiring that these samplers be quickly transported in airtight metal or glass containers or foil wrapped on ice. We investigate the transport stability of model pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with varying physicochemical properties using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) bags instead.

Aims: In addition to hyperglycaemia, glycaemic variability seems to be associated with poor outcomes after acute myocardial infarction. This study explored the impact of glycaemic variability in diabetic Wistar rats subjected to myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion.

Methods: Animals with streptozotocin-induced diabetes received insulin either to maintain stable hyperglycaemia (Dh group) or to generate glycaemic variability (Dv).

Background: Few published data are available on long-term outcomes of anterior spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The objective of this single-centre retrospective study was to assess clinical and radiological outcomes of one-stage anterior spinal fusion achieved using precontoured titanium anterior screw-plates.

Hypothesis: Our hypothesis was that anterior instrumentation produced both good functional outcomes and good correction in the coronal and sagittal planes.

Background: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) have become the mainstay of treatment for depression, anxiety, and many other conditions. However, they have been associated with an increased risk of hyponatremia. Little is known about the risk of SSRI-associated hyponatremia in certain potentially at-risk populations, such as patients with acute medical illnesses.

We describe a versatile and quick route to cationic gold(i) complexes containing N-heterocyclic carbenes and a second ancillary ligand (such as phosphanes, phosphites, arsines and amines) of interest for the synthesis of compounds with potential catalytic and medicinal applications. The general synthetic strategy has been applied in the preparation of novel cationic heterobimetallic ruthenium(ii)-gold(i) complexes that are highly cytotoxic to renal cancer Caki-1 and colon cancer HCT 116 cell lines while showing a synergistic effect and being more selective than their monometallic counterparts.

Background: Lithium remains a first-line treatment for bipolar disorder, but clinicians have considerable concern over potential adverse effects, especially in older adults. Older patients' attitude towards lithium has not been investigated, even though negative attitudes are closely associated with reduced adherence. We examine the attitude towards lithium pharmacotherapy in older adults with bipolar disorder.

The Mre11:Rad50 complex is central to DNA double strand break repair in the Archaea and Eukarya, and acts through mechanical and nuclease activities regulated by conformational changes induced by ATP binding and hydrolysis. Despite the widespread use of Mre11 and Rad50 from hyperthermophilic archaea for structural studies, little is known in the regulation of these proteins in the Archaea. Using purification and mass spectrometry approaches allowing nearly full sequence coverage of both proteins from the species Sulfolobus acidocaldarius, we show for the first time post-translational methylation of the archaeal Mre11:Rad50 complex.

The synthesis of 14-(aryl)-14H-naphto[2,1-b]pyrano[3,2-e][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-c]pyrimidine-2-yl) acetamidoximes 2a-e has been accomplished by reaction of 2-acetonitrile derivatives 1a-e with hydroxylamine. Cyclocondensation reaction of precursors 2a-e with some elctrophilic species such as ethylorthoformate, acetic anhydride, and methyl-acetoacetate provided the new oxadiazole derivatives 3a-e, 4a-e, and 5a-e, respectively. On the other hand, the reaction of precursors 2a-e with 2-chloropropanoyl chloride afforded the new acetimidamides 6a-e which evolve under reflux of toluene to the new oxadiazoles 7a-e.

Gram-positive Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus or GAS) is a major skin pathogen and interacts with keratinocytes in cutaneous tissues. GAS can cause diverse suppurative and inflammatory infections, such as cellulitis, a common acute bacterial dermo-hypodermitis with a high morbidity. Bacterial isolation yields from the lesions are low despite the strong local inflammation observed, raising numerous questions about the pathogenesis of the infection.
