Toward rapid silica analysis of CPDM samples: A study of dust recovery and quartz estimation using lab and field samples.

In US coal mines, the continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) is frequently used to determine miners' exposure to respirable dust. Capabilities to analyze the respirable crystalline silica (RCS) content of that dust are needed, but the CPDM sample collection substrate ("stub") interferes with direct analysis. To overcome this challenge, a three-step method is proposed to recover the dust from the stub, deposit the dust on a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filter, and analyze the recovered dust by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to determine the quartz content (as a proxy for RCS).

Unlabelled: There are conflicting results on the association between maternal vitamin D concentrations during pregnancy and respiratory outcomes for their offspring. However, published studies have mainly focused on the second and third trimesters of pregnancy or on high-risk population. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the association between vitamin D plasma concentrations in the first trimester (T1) of pregnancy and effective specific airway resistance (sR) for children aged 5 to 6.

Automated Scoring to Assess RAD51-Mediated Homologous Recombination in Ovarian Patient-Derived Tumor Organoids.

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) have been shown to improve progression-free survival, particularly in homologous recombination-deficient ovarian cancers. Identifying patients eligible for PARPi is currently based on next-generation sequencing, but the persistence of genomic scars in tumors after restoration of homologous recombination (HR) or epigenetic changes can be a limitation. Functional assays could thus be used to improve this profiling and faithfully identify homologous recombination-deficient tumors.

In vitro bisphenol A impairs testicular energy metabolism and spermatogenesis through nuclear estrogen receptors activation in zebrafish.

This study investigated the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) and the involvement of nuclear estrogen receptors (ESR) on testicular energy metabolism and spermatogenesis in zebrafish. Testes were incubated with DMSO, 10 pM or 10 μM BPA for 6 or 72 h, with some samples pre-incubated with the ESRα/β antagonist ICI 182,780. Gene and protein expressions were analyzed using real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively.

Viral and immune dynamics of genital human papillomavirus infections in young women with high temporal resolution.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections drive one in 20 new cancer cases, exerting a particularly high burden on women. Most anogenital HPV infections are cleared in less than two years, but the underlying mechanisms that favour persistence in around 10% of women remain largely unknown. Notwithstanding, it is precisely this information that is crucial for improving treatment, screening, and vaccination strategies.

Palliative Care Initiated in the Emergency Department: A Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: The emergency department (ED) offers an opportunity to initiate palliative care for older adults with serious, life-limiting illness.

Objective: To assess the effect of a multicomponent intervention to initiate palliative care in the ED on hospital admission, subsequent health care use, and survival in older adults with serious, life-limiting illness.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Cluster randomized, stepped-wedge, clinical trial including patients aged 66 years or older who visited 1 of 29 EDs across the US between May 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022, had 12 months of prior Medicare enrollment, and a Gagne comorbidity score greater than 6, representing a risk of short-term mortality greater than 30%.

Incidence and duration of human papillomavirus infections in young women: insights from a bimonthly follow-up cohort.

Background: We studied the duration of HPV detection and risk of (re-) detection for 25 HPV genotypes in a cohort of 132 women followed every eight weeks for up to two years between 2016 and 2020. Participants were between 18 and 25 years old at inclusion and half of them were vaccinated against HPV. They were recruited near the University and the STI detection centre in Montpellier, France.

Categorical and semantic perception of the meaning of call-types in zebra finches.

Vocal communication in social animals involves the production and perception of various calls that ethologists categorize into call-types, based on their acoustical structure and the behavioral context of production. Whether animals perceive these categories and associate distinct meanings to them remains unknown. The zebra finch, a gregarious songbird, uses approximately 11 call-types to communicate hunger, danger, social conflict, and establish social contact and bonding.

Exploring the Endothelin-1 pathway in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension microvasculopathy.

Targeted vasopeptide therapies have significantly advanced the management of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, due to insufficient preclinical evidence regarding the involvement of the endothelin-1 (ET-1) pathway in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) pathophysiology, the potential of ET-1 receptor antagonism in treating CTEPH remains uncertain. In this study, we investigated the role of the ET-1 pathway in CTEPH microvasculopathy using a multifaceted approach.

Injector port acylation of γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB): Condition optimisation, source adjustments, and characterisation of the derivatives.

For several years, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has been used to identify gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) in forensic toxicology cases. However, under injector port conditions GHB can dehydrate into gamma-butyrolactone (GBL). Therefore, it is important for GHB to undergo a derivatisation reaction before an analysis to avoid the production of GBL; various analytical methods have been developed for the analysis of GHB but very few methods use acylation as a form of derivatisation.

Working towards health: A model of cervical cancer screening and treatment for factory employees in Haiti.

Objective: In Haiti, cervical cancer continues to cause high levels of mortality and morbidity due to lack of resources and political unrest. Haitian women employed in factories are especially vulnerable because they are unable to take time away from work to access health resources. We aimed to describe a low-cost intervention which successfully addressed this need.

This work aims to evaluate the effect of AM fungi inoculation on the growth, yield, nutritional, and antinutritional properties of 7 varieties of cassava. Growth characteristics, yields, rentability, nutritional, and antinutritional of tubers of each treatment were determined at harvest.

Role of auditory feedback for vocal production learning in the Egyptian fruit bat.

Some species have evolved the ability to use the sense of hearing to modify existing vocalizations, or even create new ones, which enlarges their repertoires and results in complex communication systems. This ability corresponds to various forms of vocal production learning that are all possessed by humans and independently displayed by distantly related vertebrates. Among mammals, a few species, including the Egyptian fruit bat, would possess such vocal production learning abilities.

Radiation-free and injection-free imaging of the paediatric chest using a magnetic resonance imaging protocol including zero time echo sequence (3D-ZTE).

Unlabelled: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used for paediatric thoracic diseases but involves radiation exposure and often requires intravenous contrast. We evaluated the performance of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol including a 3D zero echo time (3D-ZTE) sequence for radiation-free and contrast-free imaging of the paediatric chest. In this prospective, single-centre study, children aged 6-16 years underwent chest CT and MRI within 48 h.

Exposure to tungsten particles via inhalation triggers early toxicity marker expression in the rat brain.

Objective: Our work is focused on tungsten, considered as an emerging contaminant. Its environmental dispersion is partly due to mining and military activities. Exposure scenario can also be occupational, in areas such as the hard metal industry and specific nuclear facilities.

The Pacific oyster reproduction is affected by early-life exposure to environmental pesticide mixture: A multigenerational study.

Pesticides threat marine organisms worldwide. Among them, the Pacific oyster is a bivalve mollusc model in marine ecotoxicology. A large body of literature already stated on the multiple-scale effects pesticides can trigger in the Pacific oyster, throughout its life cycle and in a delayed manner.

Sputum interleukin-6 level as a marker of severity during acute chest syndrome in children with sickle cell disease.

Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is a leading cause of morbimortality in sickle cell disease (SCD). In this prospective observational study, we investigated sputum interleukin-6 (IL-6) level as an ACS severity marker during 30 ACS episodes in 26 SCD children. Sputum IL-6 levels measured within the first 72 h of hospitalisation for ACS were significantly higher in patients with oxygen requirement ≥2 L/min, ventilation (invasive and/or non-invasive) length ≥5 days, bilateral and/or extensive opacities on chest X-ray or erythrocytapheresis requirement.

The Perspectives of Haitian Parents on Heritage Language Maintenance.

Purpose: The study sought to understand Haitian parents' perspectives on heritage language maintenance with typically developing children.

Method: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 Haitian parents of typically developing children. A thematic analysis was conducted to determine recurring themes.

Does an outdoor virtual environment projected in a head-mounted display affect balance in healthy young adults?

Background: Virtual reality head-mounted display (VR-HMD) is increasingly used for balance evaluation and rehabilitation. However, more studies must be conducted on virtual environments (VE) effects. This study aimed to assess the impact of an outdoor VE projected in a high-quality VR-HMD and of the VR-HMD mass on postural stability, postural control and leaning.
