Background: STereotactic Arrhythmia Radioablation (STAR) is a novel noninvasive method for treating arrythmias in which external beam radiation is directed towards subregions of the heart. Challenges for accurate STAR targeting include small target volumes and relatively large patient motion, which can lead to radiation related patient toxicities. 4D Cone-beam CT (CBCT) images are used for stereotactic lung treatments to account for respiration-related patient motion.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the mental health challenges faced by patients with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) compared to matched groups from the general population and women with type-1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).
  • Researchers found that CAH patients showed higher rates of psychiatric issues, like depression and anxiety, than those in the general population, but similar rates to those with T1DM.
  • The findings suggest that while living with CAH contributes to mental health problems, it may intersect with issues faced by individuals managing any chronic medical condition, highlighting the need for further research on their long-term mental health outcomes.

eCD4-immunoglobulin (Ig) is an HIV entry inhibitor that mimics the engagement of both CD4 and CCR5 with the HIV envelope (Env) protein, a property that imbues it with remarkable potency and breadth. However, env is exceptionally genetically malleable and can evolve to escape a wide variety of entry inhibitors. Here we document the evolution of partial eCD4-Ig resistance in SHIV-AD8-infected rhesus macaques (RMs) treated with adeno-associated virus vectors encoding eCD4-Ig.

Purpose: Screening for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) currently relies on clinical evaluations by trained practitioners, most commonly using a scoliometer. Modern structured light 3D scanning can generate high-quality 3D representations of surface anatomy using a mobile device. We hypothesized that a mobile-based 3D scanning system would provide accurate deformity assessments compared to a scoliometer.

Cyclic nucleotide-dependent phosphodiesterases (PDEs) play essential roles in regulating the malaria parasite life cycle, suggesting that they may be promising antimalarial drug targets. PDE inhibitors are used safely to treat a range of noninfectious human disorders. Here, we report three subseries of fast-acting and potent PDEβ inhibitors that block asexual blood-stage parasite development and that are also active against human clinical isolates.

White adipose tissue (WAT) is a dynamic organ capable of remodelling in response to metabolic state. For example, in response to stimuli such as cold exposure, WAT can develop inducible brown adipocytes ('browning') capable of non-shivering thermogenesis, through concurrent changes to mitochondrial content and function. This is aided by increased neurite outgrowth and angiogenesis across the tissue, providing the needed neurovascular supply for uncoupling protein 1 activation.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on evaluating two patient-reported outcome measures for people with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), specifically the PROMIS Physical Function short form and the NSCLC Symptom Assessment Questionnaire.
  • Data were derived from two clinical trials involving a total of 915 participants, assessing the reliability, validity, and thresholds for meaningful changes in these measures.
  • The findings showed that both measures are reliable and valid for clinical use, with specific thresholds identified for meaningful changes: a decrease of 6-7 points for PROMIS PF-SF indicating worsening physical function and an increase of 2-3 points for NSCLC-SAQ indicating worsening symptoms.

Hierarchical associations help animals navigate the environment by using contextual and latent states to guide learning and behavior. Chemogenetic inactivation in an occasion setting task reveals that orbitofrontal cortex is essential for implementing a hierarchical task structure, yet both orbitofrontal cortex and dorsal hippocampus are required for new learning based on the established task structure.

Demonstrations of spontaneous perspective-taking are thought to provide some of the best evidence to date for "implicit mentalizing"-the ability to track simple mental states in a fast and efficient manner. However, this evidence has been challenged by a "submentalizing" account proposing that these findings are merely attention-orienting effects. The present research aimed to clarify the cognitive processes responsible by measuring spontaneous perspective-taking while controlling for attention orienting.

Background: Pain self-efficacy, or the ability to carry out desired activities in the presence of pain, can affect a patient's ability to function before and after orthopaedic surgery. Previous studies suggest that shared decision-making practices such as discussing patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) can activate patients and improve their pain self-efficacy. However, the ability of PROMs to influence pain self-efficacy in patients who have undergone orthopaedic surgery has yet to be investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • Radiation therapy (RT) for glioma can lead to neurotoxicity, and this study compares the effects of proton RT (PRT) versus photon RT (XRT) on brain imaging metrics in patients.
  • In a study of 34 patients with WHO grade 2-3 gliomas, significant ventricular volume increases were noted in both RT groups, with XRT showing greater brain volume loss (26.55%) compared to PRT (12.03%) after two years.
  • While PRT patients did not show overall cognitive decline, individual cognitive performance correlated with brain volume loss, indicating the need for further research on long-term cognitive effects following radiation treatment.

Background: Extra-axial cerebrospinal fluid (eaCSF) refers to the CSF in the subarachnoid spaces that surrounds the brain parenchyma. Benign enlargement of the subarachnoid space (BESS), a condition marked by increased eaCSF thickness, has been associated with macrocephaly and may be associated with subdural collections. However, diagnosis of BESS is complicated by the lack of age-specific normative data which hinders rigorous investigation of its clinical associations.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates mental health issues in individuals with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) and Müllerian duct aplasia/agenesis (MA), comparing their psychiatric diagnoses to typical male and female reference groups.
  • - Results show that CAIS and MA patients experience anxiety and depressive disorders at about twice the rate of male referents, with some MA patients having higher rates of bipolar disorder, particularly those with uterine agenesis.
  • - The researchers conclude that while findings are somewhat reassuring, further studies with longitudinal designs are needed to better understand mental health changes in CAIS and MA patients over time.
