Racial and Ethnic Differences in the Relationship between Aspirin Use and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Risk and Survival.

Background: African Americans (AA) experience higher incidence and mortality of lung cancer as compared with European Americans (EA). Inflammation is associated with lung cancer, many aspects of which differ between AA and EA. We investigated whether use, frequency, and duration of the anti-inflammatory drug aspirin were associated with lung cancer risk and survival, separately among AA and EA populations.

Evaluation of a computer-based and counseling support intervention to improve HIV patients' viral loads.

We sought to integrate a brief computer and counseling support intervention into the routine practices of HIV clinics and evaluate effects on patients' viral loads. The project targeted HIV patients in care whose viral loads exceeded 1000 copies/ml at the time of recruitment. Three HIV clinics initiated the intervention immediately, and three other HIV clinics delayed onset for 16 months and served as concurrent controls for evaluating outcomes.

"I am a Runner": A qualitative analysis of women-runners' pregnancy experiences.

Background: Women runners are a group with potential for health maintenance and health promotion in pregnancy. When providers counsel women to discontinue or cut back on running without cause, an opportunity for health benefits to both woman and baby may be lost.

Aim: This study aims to explicate the experience women runners have in pregnancy to further providers' understanding of this population's unique needs.

Small Molecule Inhibition of MicroRNA miR-21 Rescues Chemosensitivity of Renal-Cell Carcinoma to Topotecan.

Chemical probes of microRNA (miRNA) function are potential tools for understanding miRNA biology that also provide new approaches for discovering therapeutics for miRNA-associated diseases. MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) is an oncogenic miRNA that is overexpressed in most cancers and has been strongly associated with driving chemoresistance in cancers such as renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Using a cell-based luciferase reporter assay to screen small molecules, we identified a novel inhibitor of miR-21 function.

Time spent with HIV viral load above 1500 copies/ml among patients in HIV care, 2000-2014.

Objective: Sexual HIV transmission is more likely to occur when plasma HIV RNA level (viral load) exceeds 1500 copies/ml. We assessed the percentage of person-time spent with viral load above 1500 copies/ml (pPT >1500) among adults with HIV in care.

Design: Observational cohort in eight United States HIV clinics.

Blast furnace slag-Mg(OH) cements activated by sodium carbonate.

The structural evolution of a sodium carbonate activated slag cement blended with varying quantities of Mg(OH) was assessed. The main reaction products of these blended cements were a calcium-sodium aluminosilicate hydrate type gel, an Mg-Al layered double hydroxide with a hydrotalcite type structure, calcite, and a hydrous calcium aluminate phase (tentatively identified as a carbonate-containing AFm structure), in proportions which varied with NaO/slag ratios. Particles of Mg(OH) do not chemically react within these cements.

Correlates of DSM-5 Autism Spectrum Disorder Levels of Support Ratings in a Clinical Sample.

The DSM-5 features level of support ratings for social communication (SC) and restrictive and repetitive behaviors (RRB) for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We contrasted cognitive, adaptive, and autism severity scores across SC and RRB groups for 158 individuals with ASD diagnosed in a developmental disabilities clinic. Roughly 46% of individuals were identified by licensed psychologists' clinical judgement as needing Level 2 SC support and 49% were identified as needing Level 2 RRB support.

Associations between history of chronic lung disease and non-small cell lung carcinoma in Maryland: variations by sex and race.

Purpose: Lung cancer is a multifactorial malignancy for which some risk factors, such as chronic lung diseases, their interactions with smoking, and how they differ by race and sex, are not fully understood. We investigated the associations between chronic inflammatory lung disease and non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and how sex and race may affect such associations.

Methods: Using logistic regression, we analyzed 1660 lung cancer cases and 1959 population controls and estimated adjusted odds ratios (AORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

Integrin α2 marks a niche of trophoblast progenitor cells in first trimester human placenta.

During pregnancy the trophoblast cells of the placenta are the only fetal cells in direct contact with maternal blood and decidua. Their functions include transport of nutrients and oxygen, secretion of pregnancy hormones, remodelling of the uterine arteries, and communicating with maternal cells. Despite the importance of trophoblast cells in placental development and successful pregnancy, little is known about the identity, location and differentiation of human trophoblast progenitors.

Inferring the risk factors behind the geographical spread and transmission of Zika in the Americas.

Background: An unprecedented Zika virus epidemic occurred in the Americas during 2015-2016. The size of the epidemic in conjunction with newly recognized health risks associated with the virus attracted significant attention across the research community. Our study complements several recent studies which have mapped epidemiological elements of Zika, by introducing a newly proposed methodology to simultaneously estimate the contribution of various risk factors for geographic spread resulting in local transmission and to compute the risk of spread (or re-introductions) between each pair of regions.

We have evaluated the impact of genetically determined ancestry on disparity in efficacy and therapy-induced toxicity for breast cancer patients in the context of a randomized, phase III adjuvant trial.

Interprofessional care collaboration for patients with heart failure.

Purpose: An innovative collaborative care model to improve transitions of care (TOC) for patients with heart failure (HF) is described.

Summary: As part of a broad effort by New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) to reduce avoidable 30-day hospital readmissions and decrease associated healthcare costs through a team-centered, value-based approach to patient care, an interprofessional team was formed to help reduce hospital readmissions among discharged patients with HF. The team consists of 5 TOC pharmacists, 4 community paramedics, and 4 advanced care practitioners (ACPs) who collaborate to coordinate care and prevent 30-day readmissions among patients with HF transitioning from the hospital to the community setting.

Do Persons Living with HIV Continue to Fill Prescriptions for Antiretroviral Drugs during a Gap in Care? Analysis of a Large Commercial Claims Database.

The significance of a gap in HIV care depends, at least partially, on whether patients continue to fill prescriptions for antiretroviral (ARV) drugs during the gap in care. We used a billing claims database to determine the proportion of persons who filled ≥1 prescription for ARV drugs during a gap in care (no clinic visit in >6 months).
