The purpose of this article is to provide new guidelines for minimally acceptable preparation taper by developing a theoretical mathematical foundation based on principles of resistance form. Yes and no are the possible answers to the question, "Does a preparation have resistance form?" This dual nature is useful because in graphing resistance form as a function of taper, potential tapers on the x axis are divided into two groups with an exact dividing point. Tapers less than this dividing point provide resistance form; tapers larger or equal do not provide resistance form.

It has been reported in the literature that impingement of the casting at the axial-occlusal line angle of the tooth preparation may be a major cause of incomplete seating following cementation. It has been suggested that an additional coat of spacer applied to these areas on the laboratory die before the fabrication of the casting may alleviate this discrepancy. This study evaluated the effect of three die spacer placement techniques on the seatability of cemented castings.

The introduction of new porcelain materials used in combination with vastly improved bonding materials and techniques have virtually revolutionized the use of conservative esthetic bonded prosthetic restorations fabricated without the need for metal substructures. Missing anterior teeth in selected cases may be replaced by all porcelain veneer bridges that are accomplished with more conservation of natural tooth structure of the abutment teeth as compared to traditional procedures. A total of 12 all porcelain veneer bridges were monitored for varying periods up to 24 months postoperatively, during which time no fractures occurred.

This case report describes a 50-year-old man from South America with AIDS who developed disseminated histoplasmosis with focal lymph node involvement. Treatment with ketoconazole was initially successful. Six weeks after cessation of ketoconazole he died of what was thought to be relapse of histoplasmosis.

A patient with aplastic anemia, who had been unresponsive to androgens, antithymocyte globulin, high-dose methylprednisolone, and cyclosporine, responded to treatment with 3-beta-etiocholanolone, nandrolone decanoate, and prednisolone acetate. Six months following initiation of therapy, she became red cell and platelet transfusion independent with neutrophils persistently over 1,000/microliters. A sustained partial remission has persisted for over 2 years.

Traditional interview studies of inconsistent parental discipline show a strong link with young children's conduct problems. Observational studies of inconsistency show weaker links with problem behavior and suffer from methodological problems. This study proposed a new observational definition of parental inconsistency, which analyzed whether mothers follow through their demands during sequences of mother-child conflict.

Long-term bone marrow cultures (LTMC) were initiated with marrow from five normal subjects and eight patients with aplastic anemia (AA). Near confluent to confluent adherent layers developed in all cultures from normal subjects and AA patients. When present, the 'cobblestone' areas in LTMC from AA subjects were smaller than those observed in the LTMC from normal subjects.

One hundred fifty patients with bone marrow failure were treated in three groups with antithymocyte globulin (ATG; Upjohn, Kalamazoo, MI) in a multicenter trial. Patients were assessed at 3, 6, and 12 months after initiation of treatment by three criteria: transfusion independence, clinical improvement, and blood counts. Group I consisted of 77 patients with acute severe aplastic anemia, randomized to receive either ten or 28 days of ATG.

The distribution and level of Campylobacter jejuni throughout broiler processing was evaluated. Six trials were conducted at three broiler processing plants to determine the occurrence of C. jejuni on commercial broilers as affected by specific processing functions.

Egg samples were obtained from two commercial egg-processing facilities to determine if Campylobacter jejuni could be isolated from the raw product or from further-processed egg products intended for human consumption. No C. jejuni were detected in any of the egg or egg-product samples or from water samples collected from the overflow of the egg washer.

Effects of product form classifications, consisting of intact turkey drumsticks, dark meat trim tissue, and mechanically deboned meat, on microbiological concentrations were evaluated. Samples were inoculated with actively growing cultures of Salmonella and Clostridium perfringens to increase naturally low bacterial populations prior to being placed at 1 C and 10 C for storage evaluations. Growth support potential for all product forms stored at 10 C was extensive, making it difficult to characterize individual product form effects.

Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a rare familial hematologic disorder that has various modes of inheritance. We have studied 2 siblings with DC. 1 sibling had thrombocytopenia, which responded to therapy with nandrolone decanoate and oxymetholone.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of interim restorations on the dimensional stability of composite post and core buildups subjected to moisture during the fabrication of cast restorations. Dimensional change associated with composite dowel and core buildups did not significantly alter the fit of cast restorations compared with natural teeth under the same conditions. The use of composite dowels and cores for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth is not contraindicated because of potential dimensional instability of the resin when exposed to moisture.

Child behavior therapists have concentrated largely on the study of family conflict in conduct-problem children. Positive interactions, such as play and conversation, and the impact these might have on problem behavior have been neglected in theoretical work, although some therapists (e.g.

During the past 9 years, 43 adult patients with severe aplastic anaemia have been treated with a combination of 3 alpha etiocholanolone and nandrolone decanoate in an uncontrolled pilot study. Eleven patients were considered acute and the remainder as chronic severe aplasia. 50% (22 patients) had a haematopoietic recovery and 40% have had a sustained remission varying from 1.

Anatomical observations have indicated a decrease of marrow cellularity with age, but these changes are not associated with anemia in the healthy geriatric patient. Aged patients with refractory anemia should be studied by utilizing red cell volume (MCV) and red cell heterogeneity (RDW). A classification with these indices initially can separate the anemias for a more fruitful investigation.

The authors obtained and evaluated antisera from rabbits injected with a derivative of a potent bladder carcinogen, dichlorobenzidine (DCB), conjugated to bovine serum albumin (BSA). A 14C-radioimmunoassay (RIA) was able to detect the presence of DCB antibodies, but its relative insensitivity led to the development of a more sensitive enzyme immunoassay (EIA). The EIA test was a "sandwich" method in which a second antibody, labeled with an enzyme (horseradish peroxidase), was used to measure antibody binding to transferrin (Tf)-conjugated DCB immobilized on a microtiter plate.
