Body mass is a fundamental physical property of an individual and has enormous bearing upon ecology and physiology. Generating reliable estimates for body mass is therefore a necessary step in many palaeontological studies. Whilst early reconstructions of mass in extinct species relied upon isolated skeletal elements, volumetric techniques are increasingly applied to fossils when skeletal completeness allows.

Synthesis, antibacterial and QSAR evaluation of 5-oxo and 5-thio derivatives of 1,4-disubstituted tetrazoles.

A series of 1,4-disubstituted tetrazol-5-ones 3a, 5, 7, 12, 13 and 1,4-disubstituted tetrazol-5-thiones 3b, 9, 10 was synthesized and fully characterized by IR, MS, (1)H NMR and (13)C NMR. The series was evaluated for in vitro antibacterial activity against four Gram negative (Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and three Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis) bacteria. The zone of inhibition was measured using the well-diffusion assay, and in vitro minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by microbroth dilution assay.

Synthetic heparan sulfate dodecasaccharides reveal single sulfation site interconverts CXCL8 and CXCL12 chemokine biology.

The multigram-scale synthesis of a sulfation-site programmed heparin-like dodecasaccharide is described. Evaluation alongside dodecasaccharides lacking this single glucosamine O6-sulfation, or having per-O6-sulfation, shows that site-specific modification of the terminal glucosamine dramatically interconverts regulation of in vitro and in vivo biology mediated by the two important chemokines, CXCL12 (SDF1α) or CXCL8 (IL-8).

Low Fouling Electrospun Scaffolds with Clicked Bioactive Peptides for Specific Cell Attachment.

While electrospun fibers are of interest as scaffolds for tissue engineering applications, nonspecific surface interactions such as protein adsorption often prevent researchers from controlling the exact interactions between cells and the underlying material. In this study we prepared electrospun fibers from a polystyrene-based macroinitiator, which were then grafted with polymer brushes using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). These brush coatings incorporated a trimethylsilyl-protected PEG-alkyne monomer, allowing azide functional molecules to be covalently attached, while simultaneously reducing nonspecific protein adsorption on the fibers.

In an observational study of 31,257 children we investigated the effects of paternal age at the time of the child's birth, paternal absence and non-biological fathers on children's health. Relative Importance of the Arcuate and Anteroventral Periventricular Kisspeptin Neurons in Control of Puberty and Reproductive Function in Female Rats.

Kisspeptin plays a critical role in pubertal timing and reproductive function. In rodents, kisspeptin perikarya within the hypothalamic arcuate (ARC) and anteroventral periventricular (AVPV) nuclei are thought to be involved in LH pulse and surge generation, respectively. Using bilateral microinjections of recombinant adeno-associated virus encoding kisspeptin antisense into the ARC or AVPV of female rats at postnatal day 10, we investigated the relative importance of these two kisspeptin populations in the control of pubertal timing, estrous cyclicity, and LH surge and pulse generation.

Overlapping HIV prevention strategies; case report of pre-exposure and postexposure prophylaxes used for a single risk event between two men.

A range of prevention strategies have been considered in an attempt to reduce HIV transmission. The use of continuous antiretrovirals (ARVs) in high-risk HIV-negative individuals (pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP) and the short-term use of ARVs following a high-risk exposure (postexposure prophylaxis or PEP) are among these strategies. We report a case of the contemporaneous use of PEP and PrEP in a sexual liaison between two men.

An ontology approach to comparative phenomics in plants.

Background: Plant phenotype datasets include many different types of data, formats, and terms from specialized vocabularies. Because these datasets were designed for different audiences, they frequently contain language and details tailored to investigators with different research objectives and backgrounds. Although phenotype comparisons across datasets have long been possible on a small scale, comprehensive queries and analyses that span a broad set of reference species, research disciplines, and knowledge domains continue to be severely limited by the absence of a common semantic framework.

Molecular docking and antiviral activity of N-substituted benzyl/phenyl-2-(3,4-dimethyl-5,5-dioxidopyrazolo[4,3-c][1,2]benzothiazin-2(4H)-yl)acetamides.

Two series of fifteen N-substituted benzyl/phenyl-2-(3,4-dimethyl-5,5-dioxidopyrazolo[4,3-c][1,2]benzothiazin-2(4H)-yl)acetamides were screened for anti-HIV-1 activity and cytotoxicity. The compounds 6a, 6d, 6e, 6g and 6i from the series 6a-i of benzylamides and 7a, 7b, 7c, 7d and 7e from the series 7a-f of anilides were identified as effective anti-HIV-1 agents with EC50 values <20μM. Among these compounds that displayed anti-HIV-1 activity, 6a, 6e, 6g and 6i showed no toxicity in human PBM, CEM and Vero cells, with the exception of 6a which displayed toxicity in Vero cells.

Brief Report: The Role of Task Support in the Spatial and Temporal Source Memory of Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show intact recognition (supported procedure) but impaired recall (unsupported procedure) of incidentally-encoded context. Because this has not been demonstrated for temporal source, we compared the temporal and spatial source memory of adults with ASD and verbally matched typical adults. Because of difficulties with temporal processing in ASD, we predicted ASD adults would benefit from test support for location but not temporal occurrence of studied words.

Rational design of a hexapeptide hydrogelator for controlled-release drug delivery.

The amphiphilic peptide sequence H-Phe-Glu-Phe-Gln-Phe-Lys-OH (MBG-1) is developed as a novel hydrogelator for use in controlled-drug release administration, which is the smallest tunable ionic self-complementary hydrogelating peptide reported to date making it attractive for larger scale preparation. Hydrogelation is demonstrated to result from self-assembly of the peptide into beta-sheet nanofibers that are physically cross-linked by intertwining as well as larger bundle formation. Finally, the release of two small molecule cargos, fluorescein sodium and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, is demonstrated revealing a two-stage zero-order sustained release profile up to 80% cumulative release over eight days.

Incidence of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers - a population-based cohort study.

Our study sought to estimate the association between race, gender, comorbidity and body mass index (BMI) on the incidence of hospital-acquired pressure ulcer (PU) from a population-based retrospective cohort comprising 242 745 unique patient hospital discharges in two fiscal years from July 2009 to June 2010 from 15 general and tertiary care hospitals. Cases were patients with a single inpatient encounter that led to an incident PU. Controls were patients without a PU at any encounter during the two fiscal years with the earliest admission retained for analysis.

Synthesis of a heparin-related GlcN-IdoA sulfation-site variable disaccharide library and analysis by Raman and ROA spectroscopy.

Synthesis of an array of differentially sulfated GlcN-IdoA disaccharides, accessible on good scale, directly from l-iduronate components is described. These are specifically directed to provide the sulfation variability at the key most common biologically relevant sulfation-variable l-IdoA O-2 and d-GlcN O-6 and amino sites of this heparin disaccharide. This sulfation-varied matrix has allowed the first evaluation of using Raman/ROA spectroscopy to characterize changes in spectra as a function of both site and level of sulfation with pure, defined heparin-related disaccharide species.

Antibacterial activities of novel nicotinic acid hydrazides and their conversion into N-acetyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles.
