Introduction: The pandemic of COVID-19 continues to impact people worldwide, with more than 755 million confirmed cases and more than 6.8 million reported deaths. Although two types of treatment, antiviral and immunomodulatory therapy, have been approved to date, vaccination has been the best method to control the spread of the disease.

Identification and characterization of a new family of long satellite DNA, specific of true toads (Anura, Amphibia, Bufonidae).

Amphibians have some of the most variable genome sizes among vertebrates. Genome size variation has been attributed to repetitive and noncoding DNA, including satellite repeats, transposable elements, introns, and nuclear insertions of viral and organelle DNA. In vertebrates, satellite DNAs have been widely described in mammals, but few molecular studies have been carried out in amphibians.

Towards the standardization of methods of tissue processing for the isolation of mesenchymal stromal cells for clinical use.

Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are currently the most extensively studied type of adult stem cells in advanced stages of development in the field of regenerative medicine. The biological properties of MSCs have generated great hope for their therapeutic use in degenerative and autoimmune conditions that, at present, lack effective treatment options. Over the last decades, MSCs have been typically obtained from adult bone marrow, but the extraction process is highly invasive and the quality and numbers of isolated cells is drastically influenced by patient age, medication and associated comorbidities.

Growth Alterations by Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields.

Background: There is an increasing interest in using physical factors such as magnetic fields as antimicrobial strategy, with variable results. The current study was aimed to evaluate the influence of extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) on the axenically-cultured parasite protozoans and growth.

Methods: Bioassays were developed using , GT-13 and IMSS-0989 strains cultured at 37 ºC in TYI-S-33 medium.

Lateralization in escape behaviour at different hierarchical levels in a gecko: Tarentola angustimentalis from Eastern Canary Islands.

At the individual level, to be behaviourally lateralized avoids costly duplication of neural circuitry and decreases possible contradictory order from the two brain hemispheres. However, being prey behaviour lateralized at higher hierarchical levels could generate different negative implications, especially if predators are able to make predictions after multiple encounters. These conflicting pressures, namely between the advantages for individuals and the disadvantages for populations could be concealed if higher-level lateralization would arise from the combination of lateralized behaviours of individuals which are mutually dependent.

Effects of ammonium nitrate on larval survival and growth of four Iberian amphibians.

The purpose of this study was to understand the differences in tolerance to ammonium nitrate in four Iberian amphibians. Results showed a negative effect on amphibian survival and larvae total length. Three different tolerance groups on amphibian survival were established.

Effects of previous sublethal pulse to ammonium nitrate on mortality and total length on Epidalea calamita larvae.

Ammonium nitrate is one of the most widespread contaminants related with the viability of natural amphibian populations. In this study we have evaluated in terms of mortality and total length the effects that a previous sublethal pulse to ammonium nitrate generates in Epidalea calamita. Experiments were divided in two phases.

Intraspecific and interspecific tolerance to copper sulphate in five Iberian amphibian species at two developmental stages.

Intraspecific and interspecific variations have been observed across many taxa with respect to resistance to natural environmental stressors. It has already been well documented that amphibians are sensitive to habitat degradation and are regarded as bioindicators of aquatic and agricultural ecosystems. In southern Spain, different toxic substances, including copper sulphate, which is used to control Cycloconium oleaginum (Fungi, Ascomycota, Venturiaceae) during spring and autumn, are used in intensive olive tree agriculture.

[Glutamate increase in the associative striatum in schizophrenia: a longitudinal magnetic resonance spectroscopy preliminary study].

Objective: To compare glutamate levels (Glu) found in the dorsal-caudate nucleus (a dopamine rich region) and in the cerebellum (a low dopamine region) among: 1) schizophrenia patients undergoing an acute psychotic episode, 2) after receiving antidopaminergic treatment (Risperidone), and 3) healthy controls.

Methods: Fourteen drug-free patients with schizophrenia and fourteen healthy controls were included. Patients underwent two proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) studies, one prior to treatment and the second after 6-weeks of daily Risperidone treatment.

Hypersensitivity to clavulanic acid in children.

We present 10 cases (6 males and 4 females) of children aged 4 to 12 years, who were diagnosed with allergy to clavulanic acid (CL) and treated in the Paediatric Allergy Section of the University Hospital Dr. Peset in Valencia from 2000 to 2005. The children reported symptoms of urticaria and angio-oedema after receiving orally-administered amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (A-CL) for an infection.

Effects of copper sulfate on growth, development, and escape behavior in Epidalea calamita embryos and larvae.

Epidalea calamita embryos at Gosner stages 3 and 19, and larvae at Gosner stage 25, were exposed to different copper sulfate concentrations, ranging from 0.05 to 0.40 mg Cu L(-1), in 96-h acute toxicity tests.
