Article Synopsis
  • - Recent studies link certain antiretroviral therapies, particularly those with integrase inhibitors like bictegravir (BIC) and tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), to weight gain and metabolic issues, but the reasons behind this are still unclear.
  • - In experiments on mice and liver cells, BIC was shown to significantly disrupt glucose metabolism, leading to higher glucose levels and insulin resistance, while also causing mitochondrial stress.
  • - The research indicates that BIC may worsen insulin resistance and related metabolic disorders in people living with HIV, suggesting a need for further clinical investigations.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found that a specific marker in melanoma (a type of skin cancer), called ALDH1A3, works with another protein called ACSS2 to help cancer cells use sugar (glucose) better and change their genes.
  • They discovered that acetaldehyde, which is a toxic substance, plays a role in this process and can help change gene activity in cancer cells.
  • In experiments with zebrafish that have melanoma, they showed that blocking ALDH1A3 can stop cancer cells from becoming resistant to treatment and may help doctors find new ways to fight the disease.

The gold-catalyzed reaction of 2-en-4-ynones with alkynylsilanes provides fully substituted allene derivatives bearing furyl and silyl groups. This transformation would involve generation of a gold furyl carbene intermediate, which regioselectively undergoes a nucleophilic attack by the alkynylsilane at the electrophilic carbene carbon atom with the formation of a β-gold vinyl cation species. The subsequent release of the gold catalyst, accompanied by a 1,2-silyl shift, leads to the formation of tetrasubstituted allene products.

This work presents a novel optical system for polarization image processing using geometric-phase (Pancharatnam-Berry) lenses. Such lenses are half-wave plates where the orientation of the fast (slow) axis follows a quadratic relation with the radial coordinate, and they present the same focal length but opposite sign for left and right circular polarizations. Therefore, they split an input collimated beam in a converging beam and a diverging beam with opposite circular polarizations.

A technique is performed to quantitatively evaluate the intensity and phase of the diffraction orders generated by tailored phase gratings displayed onto a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM). The SLM displays the grating together with a lens to obtain the Fourier transform. The setup is converted into a polarization common-path interferometer by simply rotating a polarizer.

Psoriasis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease associated with a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease, especially in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis. It has been estimated that severe psoriasis confers a 25% increase in relative risk of cardiovascular disease, regardless of traditional risk factors. Although the underlying pathogenic mechanisms relating psoriasis to increased cardiovascular risk are not clear, atherosclerosis is emerging as a possible link between skin and vascular affection.

Healthcare systems are becoming increasingly complex which is helping to promote a ‘culture of safety’ within them based on the best scientific evidence available. Indeed, creating a positive institutional culture of patient safety is reflected in health outcomes. The aim of this present study was to describe the perception of culture of safety by nurses in adult inpatient units in a tertiary hospital and to analyze adverse events reporting.

The cardiovascular toxicity of Abacavir is related to its purinergic structure. Purinergic P2X7-receptors (P2X7R), characterized by activation by high concentrations of ATP and with high plasticity, seem implicated. We appraise the nature of the interplay between Abacavir and P2X7R in generating vascular inflammation.

Purpose: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects over 10% of the global population. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been identified as a reliable indicator for assessing the effectiveness of treatment in chronic patients, and resilience as a predictor of low levels of stress and higher QoL. The aim of this research is to identify the relationship between HRQoL, resilience, perceived stress, and the different sociodemographic and clinical routine variables of advanced chronic kidney disease (ACKD).

Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have achieved unprecedented results in melanoma, the biological features of the durable responses initiated by these drugs remain unknown. Here we show the genetic and phenotypic changes induced by treatment with programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) blockade in a genetically engineered mouse model of melanoma driven by oncogenic BRAF. In this controlled system anti-PD-1 treatment yields responses in ~35% of the tumors, and prolongs survival in ~27% of the animals.
