First, the substantial generation of hot electron-hole pairs by the laser pulse modifies the interatomic bonding strength and characteristics, inducing nonthermal ionic motion. Second, incoherent electron-ion collisions facilitate thermal equilibration between electrons and ions, achieving a uniform temperature on a picosecond timescale.

Several studies have proposed a potential role for oxidative stress in the development of multiple sclerosis (MS). For this reason, it seems tentative to think that treatment with antioxidant substances could be useful in the treatment of this disease. In this narrative review, we provide a summary of the current findings on antioxidant treatments, both in experimental models of MS, especially in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and in the cuprizone-induced demyelination model, and clinical trials in patients diagnosed with MS.

This work focused on the co-encapsulation and simultaneous co-delivery of three different neuroprotective drugs in PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres for the treatment of glaucoma. For formulation optimization, dexamethasone (anti-inflammatory) and ursodeoxycholic acid (anti-apoptotic) were co-loaded by the solid-in-oil-in-water emulsion solvent extraction-evaporation technique as a first step. The incorporation of a water-soluble co-solvent (ethanol) and different amounts of dexamethasone resulted critical for the encapsulation of the neuroprotective agents and their initial release.

Common models of circadian rhythms are typically constructed as compartmental reactions of well-mixed biochemicals, incorporating a negative-feedback loop consisting of several intermediate reaction steps essentially required to produce oscillations. Spatial transport of each reactant is often represented as an extra compartmental reaction step. Contrary to this traditional understanding, in this Letter we demonstrate that a single activation-repression biochemical reaction pair is sufficient to generate sustained oscillations if the sites of both reactions are spatially separated and molecular transport is mediated by diffusion.

The pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) is not completely understood, but genetic factors, autoimmunity, inflammation, demyelination, and neurodegeneration seem to play a significant role. Data from analyses of central nervous system autopsy material from patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, as well as from studies in the main experimental model of multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), suggest the possibility of a role of oxidative stress as well. In this narrative review, we summarize the main data from studies reported on oxidative stress markers in patients diagnosed with MS and in experimental models of MS (mainly EAE), and case-control association studies on the possible association of candidate genes related to oxidative stress with risk for MS.

Trochleitis is clinically and/or radiologically evidenced inflammation of the trochlea or orbital pulley. Clinically it is characterized by pain and hypersensitivity in the superomedial orbital angle, which is increased or triggered by direct palpation of the area and/or eye movements. During the REM (rapid eye movements) phase of sleep, patients with trochleitis suffer from nocturnal micro-awakenings that impede their rest, and pain is often associated with visual symptoms (diplopia or Brown's syndrome).

This narrative review summarizes data from studies on oxidative stress markers in migraine patients, case-control association studies on the possible association of candidate genes related to oxidative stress with the risk for migraine, studies showing the presence of oxidative stress in experimental models of migraine, and studies on the efficacy of antioxidant drugs in migraine therapy. Many studies have addressed the value of concentrations of prooxidant and antioxidant substances or the activity of antioxidant enzymes in different tissues (mainly in serum/plasma or in blood cells) as possible biomarkers for migraine, being thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reactive substances (TBARS) such as malonyl dialdehyde acid (MDA) and 4-hydroxynonenal, and nitric oxide (this at least during migraine attacks in patients with migraine with aura (MWA) the most reliable.
