Article Synopsis
  • The SERPINA1 gene produces Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT1), which plays a role in balancing proteases and antiproteases; imbalances may contribute to severe health issues, including those related to COVID-19.
  • This study aimed to analyze the relationship between AAT1 levels and the severity of COVID-19 symptoms in 181 hospitalized patients.
  • Results showed that higher AAT1 levels correlated with increased severity, longer hospitalization, inflammatory markers, and worse outcomes, suggesting AAT1 could serve as a useful prognostic biomarker in COVID-19 cases.

Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) is a nitrate ester explosive that may be persistent with scarce reports on its environmental fate and impacts. Our main objective was to isolate and characterize bacteria that transform PETN under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Biotransformation of PETN (100 mg L-1) was evaluated using mineral medium with (M + C) and without (M - C) additional carbon sources under aerobic conditions and with additional carbon sources under anaerobic conditions.

This paper introduces a novel methodology that estimates the wind profile within the ABL by using a neural network along with predictions from a mesoscale model in conjunction with a single near-surface measurement. A major advantage of this solution compared to other solutions available in the literature is that it requires only near-surface measurements for prediction once the neural network has been trained. An additional advantage is the fact that it can be potentially used to explore the time evolution of the wind profile.

Background: Schizophrenia is a complex disorder involving deficits in both cognitive and emotional processes. Specifically, a marked deficit in cognitive control has been found, which seems to increase when dealing with emotional information.

Aims: With the aim of exploring the possible common links behind cognitive and emotional deficits, two versions of the emotional Stroop task were administered.

Background: The improvement of psychological treatments for depression in young adults is a pressing issue highlighted in the literature. Its relevance is determined not only because young adults are underrepresented in research, but also to prevent chronic severe mental health disorders later in life. Engagement is considered a key factor for a good therapeutic outcome, especially among young patients.

Arterialization of orbital veins is most often due to dural arteriovenous malformations of the cavernous sinus area. We report an unusual case of unilateral proptosis (exophthalmos) caused by arterialized retrograde venous flow in the external jugular vein and cavernous sinus in a patient with an upper extremity hemodialysis fistula and ipsilateral acute central venous thrombosis. The patient's symptoms improved after surgical closure of the hemodialysis fistula.

Case: We report a right-handed 37-year-old woman, with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (MD1), presenting with a posterior interosseus nerve injury because of a penetrating trauma in the right forearm. The tendon transfer technique was chosen based on tendon response and functionality of the arms during the surgery. The patient has been able return to her daily life activities with proper fine and gross motor control.

This paper introduces a new methodology for estimating the wind profile within the ABL (Atmospheric Boundary Layer) using a neural network and a single-point near-ground measurement. An important advantage of this solution when compared with others available in the literature is that it only requires near surface measurements for the prognosis once the neural network is trained. Another advantage is that it can be used to study the wind profile temporal evolution.

Background: Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a cardiac channelopathy that is inherited in an autosomal dominant way, and it is characterized by a triad of periodic paralysis, ventricular arrhythmias, and includes some dysmorphic features with incom- plete penetrance and variable expression that result in a challenging diagnosis.

Objective: The objective of the study was to describe the cardiac and extra-cardiac phenotype in a cohort of patients with ATS at risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD) to improve its early clinical identification.

Methods: In an observational, transversal study, with a deviant case sampling, four female patients with ATS at high risk of SCD were included in the study.

Objective: 85 years after the description of the Stroop interference effect, there is still a lack of consensus regarding the cognitive constructs underlying scores from standardized versions of the test. The present work aimed to clarify the cognitive mechanisms underlying direct (word-reading, color-naming, and color-word) and derived scores (interference, difference, ratio, and relative scores) from Golden's standardized version of the test.

Method: After a comprehensive review of the literature, five cognitive processes were selected for analysis: speed of visual search, phonemic verbal fluency, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and conflict monitoring.

COVID-19 may predispose patients to an increased risk of thrombotic complications through various pathophysiological mechanisms. Most of the reports on a high incidence of thrombotic complications are in relation to deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, while the evidence about arterial thrombosis in patients with COVID-19 is limited. We describe 4 cases of aortic thrombosis and associated ischemic complications in patients with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Background: Plants synthesize glutamate from ammonium by the combined activity of the enzymes glutamine synthetase (GS) and glutamate synthase (GOGAT) through the glutamate synthase cycle. In plants, there are two forms of glutamate synthases that differ in their electron donors, NADH-GOGAT (EC 1.4.

In order to test whether expression and gender can be attended to simultaneously without a cost in accuracy four experiments were carried out using a dual gender-expression task with male and female faces showing different emotional expressions that were backward masked by emotionally neutral faces. In the dual-facial condition the participants had to report both the gender and the expression of the targets. In two control conditions the participant reported either the gender or the expression of the face and indicated whether a surrounding frame was continuous or discontinuous.

Lung isolation is essential during thoracic surgery, as it allows the thoracic surgeon to visualise and work in the surgical field. The occurrence of hypoxaemia during lung isolation is common, and is even more so in patients with decreased pulmonary functional reserve. The clinical cases are presented of 2 patients with a history of left pulmonary resections (1st left lower lobectomy, 2nd left lower lobectomy and left upper lobe segmentectomy), in which sequential selective lobar blockade was performed with Fuji Uniblocker endobronchial blocker for performing right lung atypical resections (right upper lobe, middle lobe, and right lower lobe).

The utilization of high amounts of nitrate fertilizers for crop yield leads to nitrate pollution of ground and surface waters. In this study, we report the assimilation and utilization of nitrate luxuriant levels, 20 times more than the highest N fertilizer application in Europe, by transgenic poplars overexpressing a cytosolic glutamine synthetase (GS1). In comparison with the wild-type controls, transgenic plants grown under high N levels exhibited increased biomass (171.

Purpose: This multicenter, double-blind clinical trial evaluated and compared the efficacy and safety of PRGF-Endoret (BTI Biotechnology Institute, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain), an autologous biological therapy for regenerative purposes, versus hyaluronic acid (HA) as a short-term treatment for knee pain from osteoarthritis.

Methods: We randomly assigned 176 patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis to receive infiltrations with PRGF-Endoret or with HA (3 injections on a weekly basis). The primary outcome measure was a 50% decrease in knee pain from baseline to week 24.
