Article Synopsis
  • - The study aims to evaluate the deterioration of semantic and phonemic verbal fluency in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) to determine which type declines first, and to see if these tasks can differentiate patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) who will develop AD in two years from those who won’t.
  • - The study involved a verbal fluency task given to 25 MCI patients and their controls, with neuropsychological evaluations conducted twice to track changes, resulting in eight patients converting to AD by the second evaluation.
  • - Results showed that phonemic verbal fluency declines more rapidly than semantic fluency in MCI patients, but there were no significant differences in verbal fluency performance between those who progressed to AD

Epstein Barr virus (EBV) positive B lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) with cutaneous involvement include a series of rare entities that go from indolent processes to aggressive lymphomas. B-cell EBV+ LPD mainly affect immunocompromised patients while T-cell EBV+ LPD are more prevalent in specific geographic regions such as Asia, Central America, and South America. Since the latest WHO-EORTC classification of cutaneous lymphomas in 2018, significant changes have been included in the new classifications of hematological malignancies.

This systematic review investigates the efficacy of using connective tissue grafting (CTG) versus an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for soft tissue management in immediate implant placement (IIP). The study focuses on comparing the soft tissue thickness (STT) and keratinized tissue width (KTW) changes post-implantation. Adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted, targeting randomized clinical trials and cohort studies involving soft tissue grafting in conjunction with IIP.

Purpose: To identify risk factors predisposing patients to poor outcomes after fixation of periprosthetic hip fractures around femoral stems.

Methods: Prospective multicentre cohort study of fractures around a hip replacement stem managed by internal fixation. The primary outcome was one-year mortality, while secondary outcomes were local complications and healthcare burden-related outcomes (nursing facility utilization and hospital length of stay).

Fine-mapping and gene-prioritisation techniques applied to the latest Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) results have prioritised hundreds of genes as causally associated with disease. Here we leverage these recently compiled lists of high-confidence causal genes to interrogate where in the body disease genes operate. Specifically, we combine GWAS summary statistics, gene prioritisation results and gene expression RNA-seq data from 46 tissues and 204 cell types in relation to 16 major diseases (including 8 cancers).

A prospective clinical pilot study was carried out to evaluate a novel macroimplant design with a 12° angled platform. The implant is placed at the center of the socket, optimizing all the alveolar bone. In addition, the prosthetic emergence should be ideal, as it is corrected and emerges through the cingulate area.

Objectives: The aim was to collect different clinical parameters systematically and proactively regarding safety, effectiveness, and performance of a nylon monofilament suture under routine clinical practice for oral surgery.

Methods: The study design was prospective, bicentric, international, single-armed, and observational. A non-absorbable suture was applied to close the mucosa after different dental surgical interventions.

Gorlin syndrome, also known as basal cell nevus syndrome, is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that predisposes humans to tumors. In most cases, this syndrome results from inactivating mutations in the patched homologue 1 gene. Basal cell carcinomas are one of the main characteristics of this syndrome and serve as a major diagnostic criterion.

This paper presents the analysis of a pilot anaerobic digestion plant that operates with organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) from a wholesale market and can treat up to 500 kg d. The process was monitored for a period of 524 days during which the residue was characterized and the biogas production and methane content were recorded. The organic load rate (OLR) of volatile solids (VS) was 0.

Multiligamentary knee injuries associated with transtibial amputation is a pathologie with a low incidence, so their diagnosis and treatment represent a great challenge for the medical team, mainly due to the low rate of scientific publications on the matter. This article intends to present the treatment of a really infrequent pathology, presenting the clinical case of a polytraumatized patient who suffered a left transtibial amputation associated with a multiligament knee injury with dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint. After analyzing the multiple therapeutic options, a specific surgical planning is carried out for the specific case of a multiligament knee injury associated with an ipsilateral transtibial amputation, proceeding to the execution of the reconstruction of the injury with good results.

The kinematic assessment of the upper limbs in breast cancer (BC) survivors is one of the most common procedures to determine the recovery process after BC surgery. However, the methodology used is heterogeneous, finding various evaluation methods, which makes it difficult to compare results between studies. The objective of this review was to identify the technical features of the kinematic evaluation methods used in patients with mastectomy for BC.

Background: The primary objective of this ex vivo study was to assess the influence of increasing insertion torques on three types of dental implants and possible alterations of their microgeometry after the application of three different torque intensities.

Methods: 27 implants of 3 different implant brands (Groups A, B and C) were placed in cow ribs using 30 Ncm, 45 Ncm and 55 Ncm insertion torques. The implants were subsequently removed using trephine burs, and SEM analysis was carried out in order to detect implant surface and connection changes, as compared to the implant controls.

Objective: To identify adverse events related to prone positioning in COVID-19 patients with severe disease and acute respiratory distress syndrome, to analyze the risk factors associated with the development of anterior pressure ulcers, to determine whether the recommendation of prone positioning is associated with improved clinical outcomes.

Methods: Retrospective study performed in 63 consecutive patients with COVID-19 pneumonia admitted to intensive care unit on invasive mechanical ventilation and treated with prone positioning between March and April 2020. Association between prone-related pressure ulcers and selected variables was explored by the means of logistic regression.

N-methylation of the triazole moiety present in our recently described triazole-phenyl-thiazole dimerization disruptors of Leishmania infantum trypanothione disulfide reductase (LiTryR) led to a new class of potent inhibitors that target different binding sites on this enzyme. Subtle structural changes among representative library members modified their mechanism of action, switching from models of classical competitive inhibition to time-dependent mixed noncompetitive inhibition. X-ray crystallography and molecular modeling results provided a rationale for this distinct behavior.

: Immediate implant placement with immediate esthetics has become a more common procedure over time, though ensuring good emergence of the axis of the implant has been a challenge. A novel macroimplant design with an angled platform (Co-Axis) has been developed to ensure exit of the head of the implant in the correct prosthetic position. A systematic literature review was carried to determine the survival rate and marginal bone loss associated with these implants.

The purpose of this case series report was to describe the subepithelial connective tissue pedicled palatal flap technique, its indications, and its efficacy in closure of alveolar ridge reconstruction. The present case series consisted of all 11 consecutive subjects who underwent a ridge augmentation with biomaterials or with bone grafts. Furthermore, in other cases were placed immediate or delayed implants.

Article Synopsis
  • After mastectomy, women may experience changes in shoulder movement and mobility; this research aimed to assess these changes in the glenohumeral joint in women before and after surgery.
  • The study involved 15 Mexican women who underwent a detailed kinematic analysis using motion capture technology to evaluate arm movements 15 days before and 60 days after mastectomy.
  • Results showed no significant differences in shoulder movement range post-surgery, but those who received chemotherapy beforehand had a lower range of motion, highlighting the importance of early physical rehabilitation for these patients.
