Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate distraction osteogenesis for reconstruction of vertically deficient alveolar ridges and to investigate the occurrence of complications during treatment and the effect of these complications on the final outcome.

Patients And Methods: The study included 23 patients who underwent a total of 29 distraction procedures. Two types of distractors were used: intraosseous and juxtaosseous.

Objective: To report one case of synchronic prostate cancer and bilateral renal tumors, radiologically suggestive of renal cell carcinoma.

Methods: We present the case of a 63-year-old diabetic male, heavy smoker, who presents at the outpatient office complaining of right upper quadrant abdominal pain and mild obstructive voiding symptoms. Abdominal examination was negative and digital rectal examination revealed a rock hard irregular prostate.

Objectives: To assess the efficacy of triamcinolone acetonide mouthrinse for treatment of erosive oral lichen planus (OLP), and to evaluate the risk of fungal over-infection.

Patients And Methods: Clinical records of all cases of erosive and erosive-ulcerative OLP treated in our Oral Medicine Service over the period 1993-2003 were reviewed. All patients had been treated with mouthrinses containing triamcinolone acetonide at 0.

Method: Case report.

Results: An 80-year-old woman was diagnosed with cephalic tetanus, with contractures of the masseter, sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, and levator scapulae muscles.

Marjolin's ulcer is the malignant transformation of a scar, usually as a squamous cell carcinoma. An uncommon presentation form is from a laparostomy scar. A 49-year-old patient that had a laparostomy during the treatment of a necrohemorrhagic pancreatitis in 1987 complained 13 years later of a 20-cm ulcer on the laparostomy scar.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate dental anxiety in patients consulting for third molar removal, and to assess possible relationships with general trait anxiety.

Materials And Methods: Dental anxiety was measured using Corah's Anxiety Scale (DAS), the Dental Fear Survey (DFS), and the state anxiety scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Trait anxiety was measured with the trait anxiety scale of the STAI.

Objective: The present study assessed possible clinicopathologic differences between oral leukoplakia in current smokers and never-smokers.

Study Design: Retrospective study of 52 patients with oral leukoplakia. Clinical and pathologic data (age, sex, lesion size, lesion location, and presence/absence of dysplasia) were compared between 41 current-smoking patients and 11 never-smoking patients.

Extensive bone defects complicate the adequate placement of dental implants and the required angulation. In such cases, alveolar-ridge augmentation techniques such as guided bone regeneration, particulate or block grafting, and alveolar bone distraction are needed. The present study describes a case in which a large vertical bone defect in the anterior mandibular zone was corrected via vertical alveolar bone distraction.

Methods presently employed for detection of large rearrangements have several drawbacks, such as the amount of sample and time required, technical difficulty, or the probability of false-negative carriers. Using the low-density-lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) gene, whose mutations are responsible for familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), we have developed a procedure to detect large rearrangements in this gene based on semiquantitative PCR, with important improvements as compared to previous methods. Our method covers the complete LDLR gene and introduces an internal control in the reaction.

Introduction And Objectives: The routine medical check-up provides a good opportunity for screening workers early for cardiovascular risk factors. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the Spanish working population.

Methods: The study included 216 914 working people (mean age 36.

Introduction: A new method based on self-measurement of diurnal capillary triglycerides (TG) facilitates the study of postprandial lipemia (PL). The objectives of our study are: to evaluate the effect of gender and obesity on PL measured by self-determination of diurnal capillary TG with Accutrend GCT in normolipidemic non-diabetic subjects and subjects with familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH).

Material And Methods: We studied 23 FCH subjects (10 males) and 45 normolipidemic non-diabetic subjects (29 males).

Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a frequent form of autosomal-dominant hypercholesterolemia that predisposes to premature coronary atherosclerosis. FH is caused by sequence variations in the gene coding for the LDL receptor (LDLR). This gene has a wide spectrum of sequence variations, and genetic diagnosis can be performed by 2 strategies.

Semi-Poisson statistics in quantum chaos.

Phys Rev E Stat Nonlin Soft Matter Phys

March 2006

We investigate the quantum properties of a nonrandom Hamiltonian with a steplike singularity. It is shown that the eigenfunctions are multifractals and, in a certain range of parameters, the level statistics is described exactly by semi-Poisson statistics (SP) typical of pseudointegrable systems. It is also shown that our results are universal, namely, they depend exclusively on the presence of the steplike singularity and are not modified by smooth perturbations of the potential or the addition of a magnetic flux.

We examine the power spectrum of the energy level fluctuations of a family of critical power-law random banded matrices whose spectral properties are similar to those of a disordered conductor at the Anderson transition. It is shown analytically and numerically that at the Anderson transition the power spectrum presents 1/f2 noise for small frequencies but 1/f noise for larger frequencies. The analysis of the region between these two power-law limits gives an accurate estimation of the Thouless energy of the system.

Mechanical non-invasive ventilation provides a useful therapeutic option to treat some types of respiratory deficiencies. This apparatus improves the morbid mortality rate and shortens hospital stays especially since it prevents tracheotomy, but it can produce some inconveniences. The authors evaluate the efficiency of the GUTI-VAL Connection Apparatus in the treatment of patients suffering from a respiratory deficiency used along with a CPAP mask in terms of the degree of comfort and acceptance patients have, the prevention of a tracheotomy and of cutaneous lesions.

We investigate a one-dimensional disordered Hamiltonian with a nonanalytical dispersion relation whose level statistics is exactly described by semi-Poisson statistics. It is shown that this result is robust, namely, it does not depend on the microscopic details of the Hamiltonian but only on the type of nonanalytical potential. We also argue that a deterministic kicked rotator with a steplike potential has the same spectral properties.

We report a consecutive series of 105 extractions of impacted lower third molars, in each of which operative difficulty was predicted preoperatively using the Pederson scale (radiographic appearance of the anatomical position of the lower third molar), and postoperative difficulty was scored with a modified version of the Parant scale (operative manoeuvres that were needed for extraction of the third molar). Preoperative classification as "difficult" on the Pederson scale was not an accurate predictor of true difficulty (postoperative classification as "difficult" on the modified Parant scale). There was no significant association between the Pederson score and duration of operation, but high Parant scores were significantly associated with longer operations.

The aim was to evaluate E-cadherin expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma, and its possible relationships with tumour histology and with clinical course and survival. Surgical biopsies from 47 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma were analysed for expression of E-cadherin using immunohistochemistry. Statistical analyses were performed to identify possible associations with tumour clinic-histological features and with clinical course and survival.

Background And Objective: We decided to evaluate the clinical and biochemical predictors of postprandial lipemia, measured as daylong capillarly triglycerides (TGc) profiles, in normolipidemic non diabetic subjects.

Patients And Method: We studied 76 normolipidemic non diabetic subjects (45 premenopausal females). Accutrend was used to measure daylong TGc profiles during 3 days in 6 previously standardized points: fasting, pre and 3 h after dinner and lunch and at bedtime.
