The present work benefits the use of sodium tetraborate to prevent and treat hypertrophic cardiac. The data obtained from the work could serve as a reference point to compare with data obtained in vivo studies with cardiac damage. This research will be an advantage for future researches to stimulate the ones focused on developing food supplements to prevent heart diseases such as cardiac hypertrophic.

Boron is an essential trace element in cellular metabolism; however, the molecular mechanism of boron in the heart is unclear. In this study, we examined the effect of sodium tetraborate (as boron source) as a possible protective agent or competitive inhibitor of cardiac hypertrophy in an in vitro murine model. We evaluated different previously reported sodium tetraborate concentrations and it was found that 13 μM improves viability without affecting the cellular structure.

Recent studies demonstrated that the expression of coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) is implicated in the pathophysiology of myocarditis. The aim of the present study was to assess the association between active and borderline myocarditis and CAR expression in endomyocardial tissues, and analyze the association between CAR expression and treatment response. An analytic, cross‑sectional, retrospective study was performed in 26 patients with myocarditis and 10 control subjects without heart disease.

Background: miRNAs exert their effect through a negative regulatory mechanism silencing expression upon hybridizing to their target mRNA, and have a prominent position in the control of many cellular processes including carcinogenesis. Previous miRNA studies on retinoblastoma (Rb) have been limited to specific miRNAs reported in other tumors or to medium density arrays. Here we report expression analysis of the whole miRNome on 12 retinoblastoma tumor samples using a high throughput microarray platform including 2578 mature miRNAs.

Retinoblastoma (Rb) is a pediatric intraocular malignancy and probably the most robust clinical model on which genetic predisposition to develop cancer has been demonstrated. Since deletions in chromosome 13 have been described in this tumor, we performed next generation sequencing to test whether recurrent losses could be detected in low coverage data. We used Illumina platform for 13 tumor tissue samples: two pools of 4 retinoblastoma cases each and one pool of 5 medulloblastoma cases (raw data can be found at http://www.

Genes are frequently lost or gained in malignant tumors and the analysis of these changes can be informative about the underlying tumor biology. Retinoblastoma is a pediatric intraocular malignancy, and since deletions in chromosome 13 have been described in this tumor, we performed genome wide sequencing with the Illumina platform to test whether recurrent losses could be detected in low coverage data from DNA pools of Rb cases. An in silico reference profile for each pool was created from the human genome sequence GRCh37p5; a chromosome integrity score and a graphics 40 Kb window analysis approach, allowed us to identify with high resolution previously reported non random recurrent losses in all chromosomes of these tumors.

The genus Psychrobacter contains environmental, psychrophilic and halotolerant gram-negative bacteria considered rare opportunistic pathogens in humans. Metagenomics was performed on the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of a pediatric patient with meningitis. Nucleic acids were extracted, randomly amplified, and sequenced with the 454 GS FLX Titanium next-generation sequencing (NGS) system.

Background And Aims: Recurrent and specific chromosomal translocations have been described in four pediatric sarcomas belonging to the small round blue cell (SRBC) group of tumors. Identification of mRNA chimeras using RT-PCR discriminates among alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS), Ewing's sarcoma (ES/pPNET), synovial sarcoma (SS) and desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT); however, frequencies of these translocations are variable. We present a retrospective study comparing histological examination and occurrence of major chromosomal translocations to validate the diagnosis and to assess the frequency of these molecular markers in a group of 92 small round blue cell (SRBC) tumor samples from Hospital Infantil de Mexico.

Purpose: Here we describe LifePrint, a sequence alignment-independent k-tuple distance method to estimate relatedness between complete genomes.

Methods: We designed a representative sample of all possible DNA tuples of length 9 (9-tuples). The final sample comprises 1878 tuples (called the LifePrint set of 9-tuples; LPS9) that are distinct from each other by at least two internal and noncontiguous nucleotide differences.

In silico genomic fingerprints were produced by virtual hybridization of 191 fully sequenced bacterial genomes using a set of 15,264 13-mer probes specially designed to produce universal whole genome fingerprints. A novel approach for constructing phylogenetic trees, based on comparative analysis of genomic fingerprints, was developed. The resultant bacterial phylogenetic tree had strong similarities to those produced from the alignment of conserved sequences.
