Various surface modifications to increase the lifespan of cobalt-chromium (CoCr) joint prostheses are being studied to reduce the wear rate in bone joint applications. One recently proposed modification involves depositing graphene oxide functionalized with hyaluronic acid (a compound present in joints) on CoCr surfaces, which can act as a solid lubricant. This paper analyzes the biological alterations caused by wear-corrosion phenomena that occur in joints, both from the perspective of the worn surface (in vitro model) and the particles generated during the wear processes (in vivo model).

Macrophage proteomic analysis of covalent immobilization of hyaluronic acid and graphene oxide on CoCr alloy in a tribocorrosive environment.

In this work, a sequential covalent immobilization of graphene oxide (GO) and hyaluronic acid (HA) is performed to obtain a biocompatible wear-resistant nanocoating on the surface of the biomedical grade cobalt-chrome (CoCr) alloy. Nanocoated CoCr surfaces were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3 g/L HA electrolyte. Tribocorrosion tests of the nanocoated CoCr surfaces were carried out in a pin on flat tribometer.

Obesity is becoming a pandemic and percutaneous electrical stimulation (PENS) of dermatome T6 has been demonstrated to reduce stomach motility and appetite, allowing greater weight loss than isolated hypocaloric diets. However, modulation of intestinal microbiota could improve this effect and control cardiovascular risk factors. Our objective was to test whether addition of probiotics could improve weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors in obese subjects after PENS and a hypocaloric diet.

Are the common sterilization methods completely effective for our in-house 3D printed biomodels and surgical guides?

Introduction: In-hospital 3D printing is being implemented in orthopaedic departments worldwide, being used for additive manufacturing of fracture models (or even surgical guides) which are sterilized and used in the operating room. However, to save time and material, prints are nearly hollow, while 3D printers are placed in non-sterile rooms. The aim of our study is to evaluate whether common sterilization methods can sterilize the inside of the pieces, which would be of utmost importance in case a model breaks during a surgical intervention.
