The microparticles exhibit dimensions within the 2-6 μm range and mainly consist of NiO and NiMnO, the latter being promoted as the temperature of the treatment increases, especially in the shell region of the microparticles. Aspects such as the shell dimensions, the vibrational modes of the spinel compounds primarily observed in the shell region, the oxidation states of the cations at the surface of the microparticles, and the achievement of a Ni-rich 811 core and a Mn-rich 631 shell were thoroughly evaluated and discussed in this work.

High levels of 3-mono- and 3,5-diiodotyrosine (MIT and DIT, respectively) in urine have been related to iodotyrosine dehalogenase 1 deficiency, a type of congenital hypothyroidism. However, the determination of MIT and DIT in urine is not included in newborn screening programs performed in clinical laboratories to detect inborn errors of metabolism. These alterations are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) that may be moderate by dietary plant phenolic compounds. In this review, we examine the current evidence of the impact of a variety of plant products (foods, extracts, beverages) rich in a mixture of phenolics and polyphenols on: (i) glucose and insulin levels; (ii) lipid profile; (iii) blood pressure; and (iv) biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in postmenopausal women.

Objectives: To compare OSR and EVAR for the treatment of IRAAA.
Methods: 119 patients with IRAAA were electively operated by the same surgeon between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2015, following selection for OSR or EVAR according to surgical risk.
We present a resource for instructors that contains results and data sets from the Ames test. Our aim is to share the results we have collected in previous semesters with other instructors, so they will be able to "conduct" the Ames test without the need to set foot in a laboratory classroom. Instructors will be able to use our online resource to perform the test remotely, as a supplement to their laboratory classroom, or even under hybrid circumstances.

We evaluate here the combination of two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) in the multiple heart cutting mode and isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry for the direct analysis of tryptic digests of serum samples. As a proof of concept, we attempt the quantification of proteotypic peptides of Apolipoprotein AIV (APOA4), Complement C3 (C3) and Vitronectin (VTN) which have been previously identified as potential candidate biomarkers of glaucoma. Using this 2D-LC strategy, analyte enrichment steps are avoided and the sample preparation involved after enzymatic digestion amounted to a simple centrifugation, evaporation of the supernatant and reconstitution in the 1D mobile phase.

The aim of this study was to draw an epidemiological profile of Portuguese elderly adults attending in residential homes and day centers and to evaluate the association between the functioning and cognition of these older adults and their sociodemographic characteristics and presence of multimorbidity.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 613 older adults.
We have developed an analytical procedure to measure the carbon isotopic composition of multiple compounds even when there is a partial overlap in the chromatographic profiles and applied this procedure to measure the carbon isotopic composition of different metabolites in human urine and exhaled breath. Method development and validation was performed with CRM IAEA-600 caffeine after calibration of the reference CO gas using a mixture of certified undecane, pentadecane and eicosane δ(C) standards. The alternative data treatment procedure included the correction of time-lag between Faraday cup amplifiers (44 ms at mass 45 and -160 ms at mass 46), the calculation and correction of chromatographic isotope effects on each peak (isotope shifts) and the calculation of the isotope ratio for each compound using the linear regression slope procedure with data only at the top of the chromatographic peak.
