We present an illustrative case of a hybrid approach between minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery techniques. We utilized this hybrid approach for the first 3 cases to help diminish the learning curve as we started a spinal endoscopy program. The patient is an 85-year-old woman with a prior history of arthrodesis at L3-5.

Psychosocial Determinants of Mental Healthcare Use Among Mexican-origin Women from Farmworker Families in Southern California.

Little is known about the contribution of psychosocial factors related to mental healthcare use among Mexican-origin women from farmworker families. Therefore, this study assessed relationships between acculturative stress, depressive symptoms, mental healthcare service use, and preferences for seeking care. Linear and logistic regression models and chi-square tests were performed to analyze survey data from 78 Mexican-origin women from farmworker families.

Immunometabolic effects of lactate on B cell function in healthy individuals of different ages.

Aging is characterized by chronic systemic inflammation and metabolic changes. When we compared B cells from young and elderly donors, we found that aging induces higher oxygen consumption rates, and especially higher extracellular acidification rates, measures of oxidative phosphorylation and of anaerobic glycolysis, respectively. Importantly, this higher metabolic status, which reflects the age-associated expansion of pro-inflammatory B cell subsets, was found associated with higher secretion of lactate and autoimmune antibodies after in vitro stimulation.

The effect of rim-off deep lateral orbital decompression on the lateral rectus shape and oculomotor balance.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to measure the effect of rim-off deep lateral decompression for Graves orbitopathy on the lateral rectus muscle path and oculomotor balance.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of the medical records and pre- and postoperative computed tomography scans of 34 orbits of 23 patients who underwent deep lateral decompression alone. The oculomotor balance of these 23 patients was measured with the alternate cover test and prisms before and after surgery.

Accuracy and interrater agreement of death event adjudications by physician trainees: validation of the ISTH definition of pulmonary embolism-related death in an autopsy cohort.

Background: We previously determined good agreement and high specificity of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) definition of pulmonary embolism (PE)-related death among an expert central adjudication committee (CAC). CACs are often composed of experts in the corresponding research field. Involving physician trainees in CACs would allow investigators to divide the workload and foster trainees' research experience.

In this study, we investigated whether radiomics features from pre-treatment positron emission tomography (PET) images could be used to predict disease progression in patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer treated with definitive proton or x-ray radiotherapy. Machine learning models were built using a dataset from Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota (n = 72) and tested on a dataset from Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, Arizona (n = 22). Background: Low diet quality, diabetes, and chronic inflammation are risk factors of liver cancer and chronic liver disease (CLD), but the extent to which insulinemic and inflammatory diets are independently associated with risk of liver cancer and CLD mortality is unknown.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort analysis among 78,356 postmenopausal women in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study. Two validated dietary indices, the empirical dietary index for hyperinsulinemia (EDIH) and the empirical dietary inflammation pattern (EDIP), were estimated from a food-frequency questionnaire.

Purpose: To perform a radiological analysis of the relation of the anterior ethmoidal foramen (AEF) to the cranial base and olfactory fossa (OF).

Methods: Retrospective analysis of computed tomography coronal scans of 35 orbits of 35 patients with Graves orbitopathy. Following a standard multiplanar reconstruction of the orbit, the authors measured the vertical and the horizontal distances of the AEF to the cranial base and to the lateral border of the OF, respectively.
