Sub-Saharan Africa's agricultural sector faces a multifaceted challenge due to climate change consisting of high temperatures, changing precipitation trends, alongside intensified pest and disease outbreaks. Conventional plant breeding methods have historically contributed to yield gains in Africa, and the intensifying demand for food security outpaces these improvements due to a confluence of factors, including rising urbanization, improved living standards, and population growth. To address escalating food demands amidst urbanization, rising living standards, and population growth, a paradigm shift toward more sustainable and innovative crop improvement strategies is imperative.

Schistosomiasis is the second most important parasitic disease of public health importance in Africa, affecting over 50 million children aged <5 years old. Schistosomiasis control has focused on treating school-aged children (>6 years) and adults through mass drug administration (MDA). Following the recent development of a paediatric praziquantel (PZQ) formulation for children aged <5 years, there are now concerted efforts to determine optimal and effective ways to integrate treatment of these children into national schistosomiasis control programmes.

Emerging tick-borne viruses such as Powassan virus (POWV), Bourbon virus (BRBV), and Heartland virus (HRTV), whilst rare, can cause severe health problems in humans. While limited clinical cases have been reported thus far in Virginia, the presence of tick-borne viruses poses a serious health threat, and the extent of their prevalence in Virginia is unknown. Here, we sought evidence of POWV, BRBV, and HRTV exposure in Virginia via a serological assessment of wildlife and livestock.

Environmental pollution has been increasing since last decade due to increasing industrialisation and urbanisation. Various kinds ofenvironmental pollutants including carbon dioxide (CO), dyes, pharmaceuticals, phenols, heavy metals along with many organic and inorganic species have been discovered in the various environmental compartments which possess harmful impacts tox human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. Thus, various efforts have been made through regulations, technological advancements, and public awareness campaigns to reduce the impact of the pollution.

Frequent detection of sulfonamides (SAs) pharmaceuticals in wastewater has necessitated the discovery of suitable technology for their sustainable remediation. Adsorption has been widely investigated due to its effectiveness, simplicity, and availability of various adsorbent materials from natural and artificial sources. This review highlighted the potentials of carbon-based adsorbents derived from agricultural wastes such as lignocellulose, biochar, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes graphene materials as well as organic polymers such as chitosan, molecularly imprinted polymers, metal, and covalent frameworks for SAs removal from wastewater.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurate diagnosis of schistosomiasis is essential for control and elimination strategies, with traditional methods like microscopy and Kato-Katz considered reference tests, though less sensitive in low-endemic areas.* -
  • A systematic review involving 121 studies investigated the accuracy of various diagnostic techniques for Schistosoma infections compared to Kato-Katz and urine microscopy, focusing on different age groups.* -
  • The findings revealed that the circulating cathodic antigen urine test (CCA1) showed high sensitivity for S. mansoni (95%) and reasonable specificity (74%), while ELISA tests also performed similarly in detection.*

Introduction: the Growing Expertise in E-health Knowledge and Skills (GEEKS) program is an applied apprenticeship program that aims to improve informatics capacity at various levels of the national health system and create a sustainable informatics workforce. Nigeria adapted the GEEKS model in 2019 as a mechanism to strengthen data quality and use of routine immunization (RI) and vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) surveillance data among Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) staff. Since the start of the GEEKS-EPI program, there has not been a formal assessment conducted to measure the extent to which GEEKS-EPI has been able to build local informatics workforce capacity and strengthen RI and VPD surveillance (VPDS) data quality and use in Nigeria.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are class of porous coordination polymers made up of organic building blocks joined together by covalent bonding through thermodynamic and controlled reversible polymerization reactions. This review discussed versatile applications of COFs for remediation of wastewater containing dyes, emphasizing the advantages of both pristine and modified materials in adsorption, membrane separation, and advanced oxidations processes. The excellent performance of COFs towards adsorption and membrane filtration has been centered to their higher crystallinity and porosity, exhibiting exceptionally high surface area, pore size and pore volumes.

Background: Bronchiolar obstruction, which causes airway obstruction in hyperresponsive airways, often results from the contraction of the airway's smooth muscles, increased viscid mucous secretions, and mucosal oedema consequent upon a reduced cyclic 3,5-adenosine monophosphate (c-AMP). These processes respond to bronchodilators. The six cases presented to us, in Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH), Banjul, The Gambia, in the newborn period with clinical features suggesting obstruction with airway reactivity with response to bronchodilator treatment are presented here.

  • * The meeting highlighted that while PZQ is the only available treatment for all schistosomiasis species, it often fails to completely eliminate the infection, particularly in juvenile worms, and may face resistance issues.
  • * Experts discussed the essential criteria for developing new anti-schistosomal medications and potential drug discovery pathways to improve treatment options for this public health concern.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate the side effects of Isometamidium chloride by examining its potential to cause oxidative stress and DNA damage in fruit flies, determining its lethal concentration (LC) and effects on survival, behavior, and gene expression.
  • - Results showed that Isometamidium chloride had an LC of 35.88 mg per 10 g of diet and led to a significant decrease in survival rates, climbing ability, and various antioxidant activities over a 28-day period.
  • - The drug also caused an increase in oxidative damage markers and reduced the expression of certain protective genes, while molecular docking indicated that it has a strong binding affinity with p53 and PARP1 proteins, suggesting potential cytotoxic effects.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been identified as the most toxic specie of the family of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs). It has been widely distributed and frequently detected in environmental wastewater. The compound's unique features such as inherent stability, rigidity, and resistance to harsh chemical and thermal conditions, due to its multiple and strong C-F bonds have resulted in its resistance to conventional wastewater remediations.

The WHO tablet pole was developed in 2001 to facilitate the distribution of praziquantel in large-scale treatment campaigns for the control of schistosomiasis. Although a number of field studies have confirmed the accuracy of the tool in normal individuals, some studies have demonstrated that overweight and obese individuals are underdosed. This article proposes an adjustment in the number of praziquantel tablets for treatment of individuals who are overweight or obese according to their body mass index.

Background: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) and schistosome parasites are highly aggregated within the human population. The probability distribution of worms per person is described well by the negative binomial probability distribution with aggregation parameter, k, which varies inversely with parasite clustering. The relationship between k and prevalence in defined populations subject to mass drug administration is not well understood.
