Background: The number of persons living with multimorbidity-defined as the co-occurrence of at least two chronic conditions in the same individual-is growing globally, especially in developed countries. Traditionally, this increase has been attributed to a growing aging population, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, low socioeconomic status, and individual genetic susceptibility.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors of the most common multimorbidity (MCM) among Canadian middle-aged and older adults.

Organoboronic acids, some of the most common and widely used organoboron compounds, have not yet been used in the cobalt-catalyzed cross coupling reactions, despite cobalt demonstrating good reactivity with zinc reagents, Grignard reagents, and metal organoborates that are formed by -butyl lithium or alkaline metal alkoxide salts and organoboron esters. Herein, a highly efficient and practical cobalt-catalyzed coupling reaction of aryl/alkenyl boronic acids and alkynyl chloride under mild reaction conditions is reported. The advantages of the organoboronic acids, along with a broad functional group compatibility and the reaction's tolerance to moisture and air, enable this reaction to be a synthetically useful protocol for the construction of a C(sp)-C(sp) bond.

Impaired signaling between cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element binding protein (CREB) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus is generally considered to be the cause of depression. The mechanisms underlying the impairment of CREB-BDNF signaling under stress conditions are largely unclear. Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) specific peptidase 3 (SENP3) is a molecule that can regulate SUMOylation of target proteins related to synaptic plasticity.

This study sheds light on the personal characteristics of older Canadians self-identifying as severely anxious and the coping strategies that they gravitated to mitigate their anxiety. Our studied sample consisted of 606 Canadians aged 60 and above who took part in an e-survey across all 10 of Canada's provinces, launched in July 2022, when social distancing was lifted across the country. Participants completed a personal characteristics questionnaire, the Geriatric Anxiety Scale or GAS-10, and a checklist of everyday coping strategies for mitigating anxiety.

A novel strategy for the synthesis of 2-aminophenols in the absence of metals and oxidants was described. The 2-aminophenols were efficiently obtained through a cascade [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement and hydrolysis process by using readily available -arylhydroxylamines and the -generated methyl chlorosulfonate from commercially available sulfuryl chloride and methanol under mild conditions. This method could be scaled up and has a wide substrate scope with great functional group tolerance and high regioselectivity.

Background: Despite significant advancements in detecting Cd(II) using nanomaterials-modified sensitive interfaces, most detection methods rely solely on a single electrochemical stripping current to indicate concentration. This approach often overlooks potential inaccuracies caused by interference from coexisting ions. Therefore, establishing multi-dimensional signals that accurately reflect Cd(II) concentration in solution is crucial.

The soil‒water characteristic curve (SWCC) defines the relationship between the amount of water in soil and soil suction. The SWCC is commonly used to estimate the hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) and the shear strength function (SSF). Therefore, an accurate determination of the SWCC is crucial for implementing the principles of unsaturated soil mechanics.

Ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is involved in vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation. Deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) have an essential role in the UPS-regulated stability of the substrate; however, the function of DUBs in intimal hyperplasia remains unclear. We screened DUBs to identify a protein responsible for regulating VSMC proliferation and identified USP14 protein that mediates cancer development, inflammation, and foam cell formation.

Background: Up to 30% of diagnostic imaging (DI) tests may be unnecessary, leading to increased healthcare costs and the possibility of patient harm. The primary objective of this systematic review was to assess the effect of audit and feedback (AF) interventions directed at healthcare providers on reducing image ordering. The secondary objective was to examine the effect of AF on the appropriateness of DI ordering.

  • - Solid contact calcium ion-selective electrodes (Ca-ISEs) are useful for quick and easy water and body fluid analysis, but their performance is limited by potential drift over time, which affects stability.
  • - Researchers designed a flower-like copper sulfide (CuS-50) layer, modified with the surfactant CTAB, which shows improved performance with a near-Nernstian slope and minimal potential drift during stability tests.
  • - The study provided insights into the transduction mechanism involving lipophilic anions, which enhances the ion-electron transfer process, offering a new way to improve the design of redox materials used in these electrodes.

Despite the widespread utilization of variable valence metals in electrochemistry, it is still a formidable challenge to enhance the valence conversion efficiency to achieve excellent catalytic activity without introducing heterophase elements. Herein, the in-situ precipitation of Co particles on CoVO not only enhanced the concentration of oxygen vacancies (Ov) but also generated a greater number of low-valence metals, thereby enabling efficient reduction towards Hg(II). The electroanalysis results demonstrate that the sensitivity of Co/CoVO towards Hg(II) was measured at an impressive value of 1987.

Atherosclerosis (AS), a leading cause of cardio-cerebrovascular disease worldwide, is driven by the accumulation of lipid contents and chronic inflammation. Traditional strategies primarily focus on lipid reduction to control AS progression, leaving residual inflammatory risks for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs). While anti-inflammatory therapies targeting innate immunity have reduced MACEs, many patients continue to face significant risks.
