Bile acid metabolism and antitumor immunity are both disrupted during liver cancer progression. However, the complex regulatory relationship between them remains largely unclear. Here, we find that loss of aldo-keto reductase 1D1 (AKR1D1) promotes the accumulation of isolithocholic acid (iso-LCA) through gut microbiome dysregulation, thereby impairing the cytotoxic function of natural killer (NK) cells and leading to the accelerated development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Phytopathogenic Jagger causes lettuce drop, a destructive soil-borne disease. As potential biocontrol agents for this disease, 2 of 31 bacterial strains isolated from soil samples from fields containing Jagger were identified using in vitro antagonistic assays against Jagger. Mitochondria contain a 16-kb double stranded DNA genome encoding 13 proteins essential for respiration, but the mechanisms regulating transcription and their potential role in cancer remain elusive. Although methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD) proteins are essential for nuclear transcription, their role in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) transcription is unknown.
