Meningiomas of the cerebellopontine angle: radiological differences in tumors with internal auditory canal involvement and their influence on surgical outcome.

This study explored the clinical, radiological, and pathological characteristics of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) meningiomas with internal auditory canal (IAC) involvement. The pre- and postoperative MR images of 193 consecutive patients with pathologically diagnosed meningioma centered around the IAC were analyzed, focusing on changes in the IAC, maximal axial tumor volume, peritumoral brain edema, and postoperative residual tumor. Patient age, sex, tumor volume, postoperative residual tumor, and pathological subtype were compared in patients with and without IAC involvement by the tumor and among the different types of IAC involvement.

Bombyx mori cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (BmCPV) is one of the major viral pathogens in silkworm. Its infection often results in significant losses to sericulture. Studies have demonstrated that RNAi is one of the important anti-viral mechanisms in organisms.

Can Genomic Amplification of Human Telomerase Gene and C-MYC in Liquid-Based Cytological Specimens Be Used as a Method for Opportunistic Cervical Cancer Screening?

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of five methods including the ThinPrep cytological test (TCT), liquid-based cytology, the human papillomavirus (HPV) test, detection of the TERC and C-MYC genes and visual inspection with acetic acid/Lugol's iodine (VIA/VILI) for opportunistic cervical cancer screening, and to explore whether genomic amplification of the human telomerase gene and C-MYC in liquid-based cytological specimens can be used as a method for opportunistic cervical cancer screening.

Methods: Data were collected prospectively from 1,010 consecutive patients who visited the gynecology clinic and agreed to participate in opportunistic cervical cancer screening at our institution from November 2010 to July 2011. The five methods mentioned above were used for the screening in all cases.

New lignans from the roots of Schisandra sphenanthera.

Nine new lignans (1-8, 13) and five known ones (9-12, 14) have been isolated from the roots of Schisandra sphenanthera and were tested for their capacity to scavenge 2,2-diphenyl-1-Picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH). Of these lignans tested, compounds 1, 7, 8 and 13 exhibited noteworthy antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 92, 115, 35 and 48 μg/mL, respectively. The anti-oxidative haemolysis of human red blood cells (RBCs) activity of the most active compound 8, which is similar to that of vitamin C, was evaluated.

Design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel sesquiterpene mustards as potential anticancer agents.

Several novel series of sesquiterpene mustards (SMs) bearing nitrogen mustard and glutathione (GSH)-reactive α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone groups were successfully prepared for the first time and showed excellent antiproliferative activities in vitro. Among them, compounds 2e and 2g displayed the highest antiproliferative properties with IC50 values ranging from 2.5 to 8.

Clinical and laboratory characteristics in patients suffering from general paresis in the modern era.

Background: No gold standard currently exists for the diagnosis of general paresis (GP), thus often resulting in unnecessarily delayed therapeutic decision.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed for 85 inpatients with GP in Zhongshan Hospital, Medical College of Xiamen University, and the characteristics of their clinical profiles, serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examinations, neuroimaging examination, and electroencephalogram (EEG) data were analyzed.

Results: Among the 85 GP patients, the clinical symptoms that were frequently observed upon admission included a variety of psychiatric-behavioral symptoms and varying degrees of cognitive impairment.

HDGFRP2 (HRP-2) belongs to the Hepatoma-derived growth factor (HDGF)-related proteins (HRPs) family, which are characterized by a conserved HATH/PWWP domain at a well-conserved region of the N-terminus. However, the cellular function of HRP-2 remains unknown. In this study, we showed for the first time that HRP-2 is frequently overexpressed in human HCC tissues at mRNA and protein levels.

Bile duct stones are a serious and the third most common complication of the biliary system that can occur following liver transplantation. The incidence rate of bile duct stones after liver transplantation is 1.8%-18%.

Hyperdoping silicon with selenium: solid vs. liquid phase epitaxy.

Chalcogen-hyperdoped silicon shows potential applications in silicon-based infrared photodetectors and intermediate band solar cells. Due to the low solid solubility limits of chalcogen elements in silicon, these materials were previously realized by femtosecond or nanosecond laser annealing of implanted silicon or bare silicon in certain background gases. The high energy density deposited on the silicon surface leads to a liquid phase and the fast recrystallization velocity allows trapping of chalcogen into the silicon matrix.

High sensitivity phase retrieval method in grating-based x-ray phase contrast imaging.

Purpose: Grating-based x-ray phase contrast imaging is considered as one of the most promising techniques for future medical imaging. Many different methods have been developed to retrieve phase signal, among which the phase stepping (PS) method is widely used. However, further practical implementations are hindered, due to its complex scanning mode and high radiation dose.

Interventional treatment for portal venous occlusion after liver transplantation: long-term follow-up results.

Portal vein (PV) occlusion after liver transplant is an uncommon clinical situation, and percutaneous interventional treatment for this condition has not been widely described. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term treatment effect of interventional treatment for PV occlusion after liver transplantation (LT). Follow-up data of 13 patients who received interventional treatment for PV occlusion after LT between July 2007 and April 2013 were analyzed.

Evaluation of the boson chemiluminescence immunoassay as a first-line screening test in the ECDC algorithm for syphilis serodiagnosis in a population with a high prevalence of syphilis.

We developed a new Boson chemiluminescence immunoassay (CIA) and evaluated its application with cross-sectional analyses. Our results indicated that the Boson CIA demonstrated strong discriminatory power in diagnosing syphilis and that it can be used as a first-line screening test for syphilis serodiagnosis using the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control algorithm or as a confirmatory test when combined with a patient's clinical history.

Comparative Study of Endolymphatic Sac Decompression and Vestibular Neurectomy in Intractable Meniere's Disease.

To comparative study the clinical effect of endolymphatic sac decompression (ELSD) and vestibular neurectomy (VN) in intractable Meniere's disease (MD). The study included 30 MD intractable patients, 21 of which underwent ELSD and nine of which were treated by VN via retrosigmoid approach. Follow-up period ranged from 3 to 6 years.

A hallmark of neutrophil polarization is the back localization of active RHOA and phosphorylated myosin light chain (pMLC, also known as MYL2). However, the mechanism for the polarization is not entirely clear. Here, we show that FAM65B, a newly identified RHOA inhibitor, is important for the polarization.

Synthesis and biological studies of the thiols-triggered anticancer prodrug for a more effective cancer therapy.

A novel anticancer prodrug compound 1, which was designed to be triggered by thiols and release the chemotherapeutic agent mechlorethamine, was successfully prepared and evaluated for the first time. The activation of compound 1 was determined by NMR analysis and denaturing alkaline agarose gel electrophoresis. A fluorescence image and comet assay indicated that the inducible reactivity of 1 could be accomplished in cell media.

Polarization decoherence differential frequency-modulated continuous-wave gyroscope.

A polarization decoherence differential frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) gyroscope is presented. The impact of coherent polarization crosstalk noise on the differential FMCW gyro is analyzed. In order to suppress coherent polarization crosstalk noise, a novel method was proposed to produce two incoherent orthogonal polarization narrow band beams from laser diode.

Human-chimpanzee alignment: ortholog exponentials and paralog power laws.

Genomic subsequences conserved between closely related species such as human and chimpanzee exhibit an exponential length distribution, in contrast to the algebraic length distribution observed for sequences shared between distantly related genomes. We find that the former exponential can be further decomposed into an exponential component primarily composed of orthologous sequences, and a truncated algebraic component primarily composed of paralogous sequences.

The E3 ubiquitin ligase Itch and Yap1 have antagonistic roles in the regulation of ASPP2 protein stability.

ASPP2 is an important tumor suppressor protein promoting p53-dependent and-independent apoptosis. However, it has been unclear how ASPP2 protein is regulated. Here, we identified Itch as the E3 ubiquitin ligase for ASPP2.

p53 protein-mediated up-regulation of MAP kinase phosphatase 3 (MKP-3) contributes to the establishment of the cellular senescent phenotype through dephosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2).

Growth arrest is one of the essential features of cellular senescence. At present, the precise mechanisms responsible for the establishment of the senescence-associated arrested phenotype are still incompletely understood. Given that ERK1/2 is one of the major kinases controlling cell growth and proliferation, we examined the possible implication of ERK1/2.

PLK1 and β-TrCP-dependent ubiquitination and degradation of Rap1GAP controls cell proliferation.

Rap1GAP is a GTPase-activating protein (GAP) that specifically stimulates the GTP hydrolysis of Rap1 GTPase. Although Rap1GAP is recognized as a tumor suppressor gene and downregulated in various cancers, little is known regarding the regulation of Rap1GAP ubiquitination and degradation under physiological conditions. Here, we demonstrated that Rap1GAP is ubiquitinated and degraded through proteasome pathway in mitosis.

Cloning and expression analysis of a peptidoglycan recognition protein in silkworm related to virus infection.

In this study, the full-length cDNA of a peptidoglycan recognition protein named BmPGRP-S3 was identified from the silkworm, Bombyx mori by rapid amplification of cDNA ends. It is 807 bp and comprises the following: a 5'-untranslated region (UTR) with a length of 112 bp, a 3'-UTR with a length of 92 bp including a poly-adenylation signal sequence (AATAAA) and a poly(A) tail. The longest open reading frame (ORF) of BmPGRP-S3 is 603 bp and encodes a polypeptide of 200 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 22.

Three-dimensional study of poly(lactic co-glycolic acid) micro-porous microspheres using hard X-ray nano-tomography.

Poly(lactic co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is widely used in diverse fields, especially in delivering biologically active proteins and drugs. For these applications, the knowledge of morphology and microstructure of PLGA micro-porous microspheres is of great importance since they strongly influence the drug delivering efficiency. In this study, micro-porous PLGA microspheres loaded by bovine serum albumin are investigated by using a full-field Zernike phase contrast transmission hard X-ray microscope.
