Vestibular hair cells (HCs) are mechanoreceptors that sense head motions by modulating the firing rate of vestibular ganglion neurons (VGNs), whose central processes project to vestibular nucleus neurons (VNNs) and cerebellar neurons. We explored vestibular function after HC destruction in adult mice, in which injections of high-dose (50 ng/g) diphtheria toxin (DT) destroyed most vestibular HCs within 2 weeks. At that time, mice had lost the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR), and their VNNs failed to upregulate nuclear cFos expression in response to a vestibular stimulus (centrifugation).

Introduction: We sought to demonstrate how an implementation science framework can be used to increase rates of postoperative intravesical chemotherapy with gemcitabine in patients with low-grade, nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer, thereby improving the quality of cancer care.
Methods: An audit performed at 2 University of Rochester Medical Center hospitals involved in the SWOG S0337 trial identified low usage rates of postoperative intravesical chemotherapy once study accrual closed. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research guided an evaluation of barriers to adoption of this evidence-based practice.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: We assessed the institutional learning curve associated with adopting fusion biopsy using PI-RADS™ (Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System) Version 2 (v2) to detect clinically significant prostate cancer, defined as Gleason 7 or greater in men with prior negative biopsies, and identified patient and technical factors that predict success in detecting clinically significant prostate cancer.
Methods: A total of 113 consecutive patients with at least 1 prior negative biopsy and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging examination of the prostate with a PI-RADS 3 or greater index lesion underwent fusion biopsy at a single academic center previously naïve to fusion biopsy technology. Outcomes include detection rates for Gleason 6 cancer, clinically significant prostate cancer and any cancer.
Although radiation-based treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer may achieve excellent long term oncologic results, late effects of therapy may lead to soft tissue radionecrosis and velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). Repair of these oro- and nasopharyngeal defects presents a complex reconstructive challenge. We present a case of a long-term survivor treated with chemoradiotherapy for nasopharyngeal cancer who developed progressive dysphagia, velopharyngeal insufficiency, and radionecrosis of the nasopharynx and soft palate, leading to tracheostomy and gastrostomy tube dependence.
