Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how genetic variations in the PARP1 gene may influence DNA repair mechanisms, potentially affecting stroke risk and outcomes, particularly in a Chinese population.
  • Researchers analyzed 1,000 individuals (500 stroke patients and 500 healthy controls) and found that elevated alcohol and smoking habits, alongside chronic conditions, were more prevalent in the stroke group.
  • A specific polymorphism (rs8679) in the PARP1 gene was linked to a reduced risk of ischemic stroke and better initial stroke conditions, while its expression was suppressed by the interaction with the miR-124-5p molecule.

Objective: To determine the effect of PARP1 polymorphism on gene interactions.

Methods: A total of 500 patients and 500 healthy controls were enrolled.

Results: Analysis of clinical data showed that patients with stroke, diabetes, hypertension, and elevated serum triglyceride levels had higher levels of alcohol and smoking.
