() has been implicated in colorectal carcinogenesis. Here, the association of immune responses to bacterial exposure with advancing stages of colorectal neoplasia was assessed by multiplex serology. Immunoglobulin (Ig) A and G antibody responses to thirteen proteins of were measured by a Luminex-based multiplex assay in plasma from patients with colorectal cancer (CRC, n = 25), advanced adenoma (n = 82), or small polyps (n = 85) and controls (n = 100).

The African BioGenome Project (AfricaBP) Open Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics aims to overcome barriers to capacity building through its distributed African regional workshops and prioritizes the exchange of grassroots knowledge and innovation in biodiversity genomics and bioinformatics. In 2023, we implemented 28 workshops on biodiversity genomics and bioinformatics, covering 11 African countries across the 5 African geographical regions. These regional workshops trained 408 African scientists in hands-on molecular biology, genomics and bioinformatics techniques as well as the ethical, legal and social issues associated with acquiring genetic resources.

Tebipenem pivoxil hydrobromide (TBP-PI-HBr) is an oral (PO) carbapenem pro-drug that is converted to the active moiety tebipenem in the enterocytes. Tebipenem has activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens, including extended-spectrum beta lactamase-producing Enterobacterales, and is being developed for the treatment of patients with complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI) and acute pyelonephritis (AP). The objectives of these analyses were to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PK) model for tebipenem using data from three phase 1 studies and one phase 3 study and to identify covariates that described the variability in tebipenem PK.

The role of microRNA 122 (miR-122) in colorectal cancer (CRC) has not been widely investigated. In the current study, we aimed to identify the prominent gene and protein interactors of miR122 in CRC. Based on their binding affinity, these targets were chosen as candidate genes for the creation of miR122-mRNA duplexes.

Background: Adverse drug events are common during transitions of care. As part of the Smart Pillbox study, a cluster-randomized controlled trial of an electronic pillbox designed to reduce medication discrepancies and improve medication adherence after hospital discharge, we explored barriers to successful implementation and evaluation of this intervention.

Methods: Eligible patients were those admitted to a medicine service of a large teaching hospital with a plan to be discharged home on five or more chronic medications.

Background: In India, competency-based medical education (CBME) is gaining foothold to transform the medical student into a doctor fulfilling community and societal needs. With that end in view the teaching faculty are getting sensitized and trained by the National Faculty Development Program (FDP). We aimed to assess the awareness about FDP among teaching faculty in medical colleges and study the attitude and perceived barriers to implementation of CBME.

Background: Metastasis is the world's leading cause of colon cancer morbidity. Due to its heterogeneity, it has been challenging to understand primary to metastatic colon cancer progression and find a molecular target for colon cancer treatment.

Objectives: The current investigation aimed to characterize the immune and genotypic profiles of primary and metastatic colon cancer cell lines and identify a molecular target for colon cancer treatment.

SARS-CoV2 is a single-stranded RNA virus, gaining much attention after it out broke in China in December 2019. The virus rapidly spread to several countries around the world and caused severe respiratory illness to humans. Since the outbreak, researchers around the world have devoted maximum resources and effort to develop a potent vaccine that would offer protection to uninfected individuals against SARS-CoV2.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are being widely researched upon for several years with translational application in regenerative medicine. Many studies acknowledged trophic factors from MSCs, attenuating dreadful ailments. The beneficial properties of MSCs are attributed to their secretion of paracrine factors as extracellular vesicles/ exosomes in the tissue microenvironment.

Oxidative stress has been known to be the underlying cause in many instances of cancer development. The new aspect of cancer genesis that has caught the attention of many researchers worldwide is its connection to non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). ncRNAs may not be protein coding, but in light of the more recent discovery of their wide range of functions, the term 'dark matter of the genome' has been rendered inapplicable.

Tumor breakthrough is driven by genetic or epigenetic variations which assist in initiation, migration, invasion and metastasis of tumors. Astrocyte elevated gene-1 (AEG-1) protein has risen recently as the crucial factor in malignancies and plays a potential role in diverse complex oncogenic signaling cascades. AEG-1 has multiple roles in tumor growth and development and is found to be involved in various signaling pathways of: (i) Ha-ras and PI3K/AKT; (ii) the NF-κB; (iii) the ERK or mitogen-activated protein kinase and Wnt or β-catenin and (iv) the Aurora-A kinase.

Multifunctional in nature, the protein Astrocyte Elevated Gene-1 (AEG-1) controls several cancers through protein-protein interactions. Although, specific physiological processes and molecular functions linked with AEG-1 interactors remain unclear. In our present study, we procured the data of AEG-1 interacting proteins and evaluated their biological functions, associated pathways, and interaction networks using bioinformatic tools.

The novel coronavirus disease 2019, a pandemic of global concern, caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has severely revealed the need for public monitoring and efficient screening techniques. Despite the various advancements made in the medical and research field, containment of this virus has proven to be difficult on several levels. As such, it is a necessary requirement to identify possible hotspots in the early stages of any disease.

Background: Hydromethylthionine is a potent inhibitor of pathological aggregation of tau and TDP-43 proteins.

Objective: To compare hydromethylthionine treatment effects at two doses and to determine how drug exposure is related to treatment response in bvFTD.

Methods: We undertook a 52-week Phase III study in 220 bvFTD patients randomized to compare hydromethylthionine at 200 mg/day and 8 mg/day (intended as a control).

Background: Although hydromethylthionine is a potent tau aggregation inhibitor, no difference was found in either of two Phase III trials in mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD) comparing doses in the range 150-250 mg/day with 8 mg/day intended as a control.

Objective: To determine how drug exposure is related to treatment response.

Methods: A sensitive plasma assay for the drug was used in a population pharmacokinetic analysis of samples from 1,162 of the 1,686 patients who participated in either of the Phase III trials with available samples and efficacy outcome data.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental monogenic disorder with a strong genetic influence. Idiopathic autism could be defined as a type of autism that does not have a specific causative agent. Among signalling cascades, mTOR signalling pathway plays a pivotal role not only in cell cycle, but also in protein synthesis and regulation of brain homeostasis in ASD patients.

Macrobrachium rosenbergii nodavirus (MrNV) is the causative agent of white tail disease (WTD) which seriously impedes the production of the giant freshwater prawn and has a major economic impact. MrNV contains two segmented RNA molecules, which encode the RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and the capsid protein (MrNV-CP) containing 371 amino acid residues. MrNV-CP comprises of the Shell (S) and the Protruding (P) domains, ranging from amino acid residues 1-252 and 253-371, respectively.

Background: Only a few studies have examined the presence of Anaplasma marginale and Anaplasma centrale in South Africa, and no studies have comprehensively examined these species across the whole country. To undertake this country-wide study we adapted a duplex quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay for use in South Africa but found that one of the genes on which the assay was based was variable. Therefore, we sequenced a variety of field samples and tested the assay on the variants detected.
